Compared to services like ProtonMail and Tutanota, which have end-to-end encryption, how safe is Vivaldi Webmail? Is it encrypted? Does it collect our data? Are its servers safe?

@veronesi It's not encrypted. It's just regular webmail, hosted on Vivaldi servers using RoundCube software. No data is collected from it, ever, by anyone. Roundcube servers have been (partially) hacked once in the last fifteen years, so the software would not appear innately vulnerable.

(See @jane-n post below, that encryption can be added.)

            A couple of corrections.

Vivaldi Webmail does not have encryption by default, but you can encrypt your correspondence, if you wish. See Vivaldi Help for instructions.

Webmail is hosted on our own servers in Iceland (just like Sync and Vivaldi Social). Only the user interface on webmail.vivaldi.net is provided by Roundcube.

If you use Webmail with OpenPGP encryption, only body and attachments are encrypted but not the subject as in newer implementations of PGP encryption with Thunderbird.

Also worth pointing out - if you decide to use PGP, but store keys on vivaldi's webmail interface you have to trust vivaldi will keep the private keys safe. The alternative is to use a desktop mail program that supports PGP keys stored offline. Currently the desktop client in the browser does not support this.

I used to use Proton Mail, however only less than 1% of my contacts used encrypted exchange. From this reason I prefer Vivaldi webmail as the privacy and security standards are impressive in my opinion. In fact, they give you two options when you sign up for webmail based on your needs, at the link. If you really need full encryption email, that is what the two providers you mentioned specialize.

                        Hope this helps.
