Manually delete Extensions (because Vivaldi crashes on launch)
-
Hey everyone,
I got a problem. Yesterday Vivaldi suddenly crashed when I opened a new Tab and since then it just crashes on launch when using my Default Profile.The browser launches fine when I use --disable-extensions, but then the extensions aren't listed in the extension view.
I looked online and found a thread on this forum from 2021 I believe whith a similar problem and the solution there was to go inside the SecurePreferences file and delete the lines corresponding to the extensions. But this didn't help. Vivaldi still crashes when I do this.
So in another thread I read to delete the specific folders from the Extensions folder and the Local Extension Settings folder. Again, Vivaldi just crashes on Launch.
My question now is, is there a way to just delete all of my extensions so that Vivaldi launches again? Or is there a way to transfer all my other data (open tabs specifically) into a new Profile, so that I can just switch to that?

@Mumantai Remove (f.ex. move out to desktop) from subfolder Default all subfolders Extension*
If you use Vivaldi Sync you need to disable syncing of extensions:
Open Settings → Sync → select "Sync Selected Data" → untick "Extensions" → confirm "Apply Changes" -
@DoctorG This unfortunately didn't help. Vivaldi still crashes on launch when I remove these folders

Hi, there are more files involved, I did not test this but there is a list. I am not sure if this is up to date:Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Still crashing
But I guess this list is outdated, as the Extension Scripts folder isn't listed on it. But maybe this list can help me resetting the browser without losing my tabs. That's pretty much my main concern. Everything else I can easily reconfigure/reinstall

@Mumantai
Check:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/14642/how-to-manually-backup-restore-transfer-your-profile-to-another-device
This is a complete manual to move/restore profiles.
The folder Sessions should be include all tabs and sessions, in the description is a folder Current Sessions, but this was removed.
I send feedback to the help page to get it up to date, it is a few Years old if I remember correctly.Cheers, mib

Thinking out loud: rename the Preferences file, see if that gets you up. If so, then delete your extensions. Then go back and restore your preferences file.

@paul1149 Didn't work as well. What I did now was to just save my Tabs as a Session and move it into a new Profile's Session folder to load it there and then I just installed my most used Plugins and set everything up again.

Okay, I think I found the culprit. It's the Honey extension. Problem is, I installed it on my new profile today and it crashes on launch again and I can't get it uninstalled. Seems like I need yet another profile... Why is it so hard to manually uninstall an extension?!

@Mumantai
Hi, I can try to ask in the developer chat next week if there is a way to delete extensions manually.
Is this this one?
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/honey-automatic-coupons-r/bmnlcjabgnpnenekpadlanbbkooimhnj
What happen when you remover the folder
bmnlcjabgnpnenekpadlanbbkooimhnj
in Extensions?
Extensions are synced, they are in a database, maybe it is possible to reset this.Cheers, mib
EDIT: Hm, Vivaldi start with this extension but I cant/want join to Honey. -
@mib2berlin Yes this is the one. This is the only extension I installed today so it must be the culprit.... But maybe it's a combination of extensions that don't work together? I mean as long as I can just save my tabs into a session and make a new profile it's not THAT bad, but it's kind of annoying... Also Vivaldi is just getting stuck when I try to delete the old profile...

@Mumantai
It is possible more than your profile is broken, if I really want to start from scratch I delete the complete User Data folder, on Linux the .config/vivaldi folder.
Vivaldi create a new one at next start, then you can start to copy your sessions and other files back.
By the way, do you use sync?Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin Hmmm, maybe I should try this...
Also: No, I'm not using Sync. -
@Mumantai
OK, I try to catch a developer, wait a bit I am not sure if Tuesday is a holyday in vinkings land.Cheers, mib

In the meantime, I deleted everything out of the User Data Folder Except the Profiles themselves.
My Default Profile is now loading again and showing all the Extensions that were installed. Only thing is they're not really installed and have no icon (but maybe that's because of some of the older attempts with deleting stuff).
So now I can just go and just reinstall these.
The only thing that seems to be missing completely is the Chrom Web Store Button, but I guess that was an extension by Vivaldi themselves?Now I just need to see how it behaves in the coming days and hopefully everything is going fine
