Crash uninstalling extension followed by crash on startup
-
So this happens with one certain extension under certain conditions.
- have a tab opened to youtube -> liked videos.
- in another tab, go to google extensions and install "playlist search for youtube"
- from the same google extensions website from where you installed it, try to remove it
- browser crashes.
- relaunch the browser and right click the extension in the extension bar
- try to remove the extension
- browser crashes.
- relaunch the browser and go to extensions page in vivaldi
- vivaldi://extensions/
- try to uninstall the extension
- browser crashes
- relaunch the browser and go to extensions page in vivaldi
- vivaldi://extensions/
- disable the extension
- browser crashes
- relaunch the browser
- browser crashes. Forever
Workaround: delete Sessions folder, launch browser and remove extension, delete new Sessions folder and restore old Sessions folder.
The problem is caused by that extension and that youtube liked videos tab, however the problem itself is that Vivaldi just crashes when trying to remove or disable the extension, which is a basic browser functionality.
This did NOT happen in Chrome, just Vivaldi.
-
@apekiller Hi, I can confirm that Vivaldi crashes when trying to remove this extension only while a YT playlist tab is open.
Some extensions are just badly coded and the extensions authors never test with Vivaldi. But, the browser should not just crash.
Please read:
- Help us reproduce your issue
- How to report a bug for Vivaldi
- How to report crashes on Windows, macOS, Linux
carefully and report the bug to Vivaldi bugtracker
After reporting, please post VB-number here and I can confirm the bug in the tracker.
-
You can see from the first post that I already reproduced the issue
Please check VB-97297
-
@Pathduck well the bug report was an absolute disappointment and a waste of time.
a volunteer replied in less than 2 minutes (yes, not even 2 minutes!) to tell me they haven't reproduced it, even though you were able to reproduce it just fine... and gave me some baloney advices
-
@apekiller You did a test with older version.
Do you think internal testers gonna try with a older version?
I get no crash with 6.0.2979.18 Win 11
But i pinged dev to check the issue in tracker, wait a few days. -
@DoctorG I just retested with the last version and the result is IDENTICAL.
did you miss a step? you need to keep that "liked videos" tab opened.
still happens on 6.0.2979.18 win 10.
the "volunteer" just saw older version and didn't even bother to check... useless
-
@apekiller I confirmed the tracker now.

Why so unpolite? I am a unpaid person and there is no need to attack me.
Your report was not sufficient. We do not test with versions which are out-of-date. That's why you got such predefined mail.@apekiller said in Crash uninstalling extension followed by crash on startup:

Well, learn to create good reports, stay polite and wait a few days until someone will test more.

You report was less useful. We do not test with versions which are out-of-date. That's why you got such predefined mail.
Didn't mean to sound impolite, but surely you can understand how being simply dismissed by someone who didn't even bother to check a crash with 100% repro (it happens on the last version as well) and just responded with copy pasted advices would be upsetting and/or frustrating. Especially since someone else had also reproduced it besides me.
An answer like "hey, i did try but on a newer version and it didn't happen, could you update it and try again, let us know if it still happens to you" would have been more useful than "you should disable all your extensions and make a clean profile". Btw the clean profile faq has steps from Brave browser and I don't have that "manage people" icon there, so that guide fails from step 1.
Anyway, I've reproduced the issue with the last version as well and there is absolutely no change. I believe the steps are very easy to follow and intuitive. As Pathduck said, you just need a youtube playlist opened when trying to uninstall or disable that extension. If you disable it well... you get a crash on each browser launch.
-
@apekiller We have reproduced the issue and confirmed the crashes. Sorry for the trouble
Note that extension crashes might take a long time to fix, so in the meantime try to close any YT playlists before uninstalling the extension?
And I guess, once the troublesome extension is finally uninstalled, no more a problem for you
Crash reports are always useful though, the browser should not crash no matter how abused it is by badly coded extensions.
-
@apekiller I did not manage to get a crash on 6.0 but on 6.1 with Win 11 22H2.
See, i want to help, not to frustrate users. Sad, that it was seen as a worst case to give you a fast feedback by bug tracker. -
@Pathduck
I managed to uninstall the extension, as mentioned in my workaround.
It took a bit of searching, initially i was looking for a "safe mode" to make the browser launch without crashing immediately, then I found the Profile folder being mentioned as advice to someone else and worked with that.I have also attached a crash log to the ticket, if necessary I can provide more
Thanks a lot for your help. Also I quite like your friendly demeanor

I think the devs can check the crash dumps.
If they need more, i hope, they'll contact you.I will try in internal 6.1.3010.* on win 11 and Debian 11 if the crash appears.
//EDIT: Crashes on Debian 11 with SIGSEV SEGV_MAPERR 000000000268.
I updated the tracker with a crashlog for Debian. -

In my testing this, I confirmed the crash on Remove.
BUT - once I restarted the browser, the extension was successfully removed so no longer an issue.
So I could not 100% confirm your report, because the extension was removed after the crash.
But crash it did. Thanks a lot for your help. Also I quite like your friendly demeanor
Thanks, but believe me - it's not always what users think, I can be quite blunt if needed

no hard feelings, have a nice evening!
and yes, they can contact me for crash logs or to confirm if the issue is fixed, i don't mind.

Weird, for me the extension is still there after the crash. and if i disable it, well... it's even worse. crash at every launch. which i think shouldn't happen because it's not active (after deleting sessions folder, i saw it disabled)
-
that was you?
Yes, it was me.

Ok, i take this as a "Apologize me" by you.
And i hope they find a crash fix for you the next weeks.
We Vivaldians do no want users get disappointed and run away from us -

There may be some extra details here that will require additional testing to figure out how exactly this works, per OS, version and other possible settings that might matter.
The important thing is we have crash dumps and a developer with the right tools should be able to look at them and figure out what causes the process to crash
-
The browser extension I maintain has the same issue. Is there something I can do to fix this for my Vivaldi users? Or will this be fixed in the next Vivaldi update?
-
@arnoudkooi Hi,
What extension would that be?
How do you know it's the same issue?
This topic was opened for a crash with a specific extension dealing with YouTube playlist, and caused when removing the extension while a YouTube playlist was open.
Does your extension also deal with YT playlists? -
@Pathduck
