Why launch a new feature without fixing the BUGS? Workspaces

First off I love the idea of workspaces since I always have a lot of tabs open. That being said it has a huge problem.

It DISORGANIZES every damn workspace EVERY TIME you close the browser. It also LOSES some of the tabs every time it DISORGANIZES itself.

I had some very important tabs open and now I can't find them because vivaldi just closed them on me. I also have to organize everything once again.

This is very frustrating, why bother with launching an update without fixing such huge bugs?

On the bright side the emojis I put for the workspaces are still there..nice.

@mohitmojito Settings → General → Startup → enable Last Session and restart.
Do you run any a extensions or UserJS which affects tabs and sessions?

I can confirm the same behaviour and i do have startup with last session selected. I've setup the tabs in my multiple workspaces several times to test and upon restarting the browser it's consistently removing the tabs from those workspaces and placing them all in the root workspace.

My 3 or 4 extensions aren't tab related.

I'll continue to check settings and try multiple profiles and reset the environment. I want this to work. I love the idea. - let's see what happens.

@mohitmojito does the symptom still occur in a clean test profile, which fwiw you can create and launch from a terminal with vivaldi-stable --profile-directory="NewTestProfile"?

I've the same problem. Vivaldi takes all the tabs outside of the browser when I restart my computer. I haven't lost any tab, and it does not seem to do so when I just close and reopen the browser, though it's still frustrating.

Yeah I still have the same problem. A lot of people are reporting the same issue. I hope the team let's us know if they're working on it or not.

@ybjrepnfr Terminal? I am not sure what that or test profile means man. I am not a developer, just a regular user who prefers Vivaldi over other browsers.

Similar function but I think it's more polished.

I was able to resolve my issue after resetting my remote data sync. It seems something in there was conflicting with workspaces. Here's the thread with my posts: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/85955/tab-stacks-and-workspaces

This seems to have been around since workspaces in vivaldi://experiments... I fixed it by disabling running Vivaldi in the background. chrome://settings/?search=background+apps

I tried it again, and it still happens. This would probably explain why everyone is having the problem after their browser (and extensions) is re-synced.

To reproduce:

Make sure to save tabs as a session first.

Install a chrome extension that runs in the background
chrome://settings/?search=background+apps <-- Make sure you have "continue running background apps when Vivaldi is closed" enabled
Close vivaldi (from the app, don't quit it from the systray or taskmgr)
Most of your tabs should now be in a jumbled mess.

that recent exploit forced their hand. But instead of limiting access to it or hindig behind "experimental" they went with it as full-fledged ready-for-release feature.

@mohitmojito Is fixed in snapshot. It seems not all the fixes went to stable yet.

@hitripley It's always better to get the functions directly into your brorwser. Besides, the more extensions you get the more RAM they'll consume. If Vivaldi didn't have the workspace function integrated, as it'd been until the update, using te extension would make sense. Now it doesn't: am I really forced to make my browser slower with an extension, bothering to install more third parties, just because the team has not fixed a bug?

I still have all the same issues as described above. Is this still really not fixed and not even an official announcement / warning by the Vivaldi team? I just switched from Edge a few days ago and this is not a good look for Vivaldi

tl;dr: The size of an extension doesn't make much impact if it's well coded - that also applies for performance.

@lSang I agree upon the fact that it's pointless to replace builtin features by extensions. But for what you state else you might neighter have knowledge about how this type of browser works, nor have actually looked at the extension. With literally 76KiB it consumes as much memory as the main html of most modern (larger) websites. If you have enough tabs that you need to organize them you won't even notice that little amount. Not in the slightest. As for performance: the entire UI of Vivaldi is made up of html, css & js. So if this extensions existence affects performance depends entirely on its efficiency.
As this extension only affects the main UI - it shouldn't require loading into webcontent - processes at all.

The real issue with this tool is that it requires you to create an account to be able to use it.

This Issue is fixed in Version 6.1.3035.84!
(I don't know the exact Version it got fixed.)

Workaround (for older versions):
Assign a shortcut in Settings → Keyboard → »Tab« section to the command Save All Tabs as Session

Now you can make snapshots simply by pressing the shortcut & enter.
(Vivaldi fills in the current timestamp if no name provided.)

Make a snapshot/backup before updating!

Info for the Vivaldi - Team: This anomaly happened in the following szenarios (for me):

→ Browser Update
→ Profile launched through syscall (clicked link)
→ Browser shut down by any other means than Browser controls (including Ctrl + Q)
→ Browser crash

Im currently running V. 6.1.3035.84 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit)
Updating to this version has still caused the tabs to regroup into the main workspace (~300 Tabs within 11 Workspaces).

Other than an update i tested all the above scenarios & couldn't reproduce the issue anymore. Good Job Vivaldi Devs :·)

Details: I sent SIGQUIT to the main process to close through different means - & executed chrome://inducebrowsercrashforrealz to simulate a crash.
~~I did not test logging out with the browser opened!~~ Works too
