Vivaldi 5.7 won't install on Win 8.1

@Catweazle Also, many thanks for the Q4OS link.
-
I see that there are potential problems with mounting NTFS drives in Linux. I had the same problem with OS/2, which used HPFS. Can anyone comment on this?

@Zalex108 I just checked WindowssXLite, and it only seems to have options for Win 10 and 11. Nothing for 8.1.
-
Yes,
I meant to Upgrade the OS to this kind of since the Telemetry and unnecessarily default apps are removed keeping the option to install them just if you want / need. Here I'm using the Neon Dreams edition with windows updates also using the WXL WindowsXLite package.

@Catweazle said: "you are in the same thing, since Gecko Browsers are also going to stop supporting Win7/8.1 this year. That is to say, it doesn't matter if you install Firefox or one of its Forks, it will only stretch the problem until the summer, by far."
I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. They seem to have done some of their own development, and are not just using gecko. I'm not sure of the details, but here's a screen shot from their forum, answering that very question.

@rbeeson , they may support it for a while longer, but as I said, one thing is the support they give to the OS and another is the acceptance and compatibility of certain services and pages that require an up-to-date browser and OS (banks and official administrations are those who most reject outdated systems for security reasons). You can try it, but it will not solve the underlying problem in the long run. You also can try browsers which don't use Gecko or Chromium, as the one I presented in another thread, maybe they last a bit longer, it has also an inbuild adblocker. WebView2 engine, in separat download.

@rbeeson they forked gecko xp esr codebase time ago and currently are patching as goanna engine to keep "legacy" support. Thus some things, like drm (streaming) may not work. Current gecko's won't work.
I'd avoid "lite builds" as are more prone to issues; q4os is a better choice imho.
I think now Linux self mounts the ntfs drives without particular issues. -
@Catweazle The Pale Moon team seem to indicate that they intend to keep the browser updated so it won't trigger those rejections by websites. They just did a major update a few weeks ago. Time will tell, obviously. Meantime, the SSSuite Netsurfer looks fascinating. I will definitely check it out.
I need to emphasize that I'm not being casual about security. I'm very aggressive about security, and have had only 3 close calls with viruses or malware in 40 years of using computers. In all 3 cases I was able to block the invaders before they got embedded in my system.
My strategy here is not to keep using out-of-date browsers. I want to keep using Vivaldi, and to that end I will install the Q4OS Linux system on my Win 8.1 PC when I have the chance. Then I'll be able to keep using Vivaldi again. If Q4OS works, I'll put a new SSD in that PC and make it a Linux drive.
But I don't have time for all that now. For now, if I start having problems I can use my wife's laptop, which is Windows 11, for web work, and use the PC for local work. I hate this laptop, and don't really care for Win 11, so I'm putting the moment of reckoning off as long as possible without, I hope, taking too many risks of compromising security.

@Hadden89 Please see my reply to Catweazle. Regarding streaming in Pale Moon, I did check out the PBS Passport site yesterday, and it worked fine. I haven't tested any commercial sites yet.
-
@rbeeson , yes, the Netsurfer is nice and fast like an Pop up. The downsite is that you can't change the search engine, which is Groot search. It's a good search engine with a good privacy, but only this, apart it put itself as default browser, this must you change later in the Windows settings and in the other Browser which you want use as default. The upsite is, that you have the complete SSuite as widgets in the browser, which includes Office apps (files save locally in Html format), To Do's, Graphic editors, app to encrypt Documents (Mercury Rising), Streaming TV and Radio, Games and a lot more.

I tested Pale Moon with PBS Passport, Medici.TV, the Met Opera streaming archive, and with Amazon Prime Video. It works with the first three, but you're right that it won't work with Amazon Prime. They demand that I "Update to a later version of Firefox." I'm pretty sure that the others have some sort of DRM, but obviously it's not so fussy.
Good to know the truth of the matter.

I try my best to avoid subscription-based software, for obvious reasons
I'm generally more comfortable with paid software than with free software. If I'm not paying for it, I'm likely the product!

My Chromebook seems to read my NTFS microSD card without any trouble. That said, Chrome/Chromium OS is not exactly Linux.
