Google Maps on Win 11 and Vivaldi wont change location.
-
I recently moved and am unable to change my default location (the blue dot) in Win 11 on Google Maps in Vivaldi. I have no issues with other browsers and other devices, just Vivaldi and Win 11. Furthermore, I know Vivaldi has issues with location that other browsers do not. I have changed many setting on Windows, My Microsoft Account, Vivaldi about: config, but nothing works. Ideas?

@mib2berlin There is a blue dot that shows your current location.
-
@jcm63
This looks like a mobile device but anyway this is may a Google service and Vivaldi cant access to it like many others.Cheers, mib

I have no issues with Android devices or other browsers. The issue lies with a Win 11 laptop and Vivaldi only.
-
@jcm63
Other browsers pays fees to Google or get support like Firefox. I think I cant help you further here, Vivaldi cant use Google services as speech search or text to speech for example and I guess it is the same for Google maps.
I hope another user with more experience with the maps features steps by to help you.Cheers, mib

@jcm63 Did you try testing this in a guest window? For me, it seems to work without issues in Vivaldi 5.6.2867.46 on Windows 11 - after granting permissions for Google Maps to use my location, it is shown correctly on the map.
-
No, l fixed it by fully uninstalling Vivaldi and deleting all my personal data and restarting the device. When l rebooted and signed in (l had all my personal data synced from another device), the problem was solved.

This issue is NOT solved. After several days, the same issue with incorrect location came back. I have moved, but Google Maps on Win 11 and using Vivaldi still shows my old location.
-
@pafflick When I use the Guest window, the correct location is displayed.
-
@jcm63 Have you tried clearing cache+cookies or simply refreshing Maps with Ctrl+F5 so that it loads fresh?
-
@Pathduck Yes all done. I redeleted my Vivaldi Profile folder, and we shall see. The problem always come back.
-
@jcm63 Such issues are almost always due to cached content or cookies. Extremely rare to have to delete your entire profile... it really should not be necessary. Usually Ctrl+F5 works for most website issues.
-
@Pathduck I have deleted my profile several times, Vivaldi shows the correct location for a while but always reverts to my old location. Ctrl +F5 does nothing at all. All cookies have been deleted many times over. This is a Vivaldi issue, Google Maps works perfectly with Chrome and Edge. I'm quite convinced that the problem is not solvable.
-
@jcm63 Why is there a green "Solution" note on my prior explanation? This issue is NOT solved.

@jcm63 If you mean this topic:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/70675/unable-to-use-location-servicesThat's because it's not yours to decide if it's solved or not. The user who posted it was satisfied with the explanation and documentation linked. So it was set as Solved. It might not even have been related to this issue you're having. The user who creates a topic gets to decide and even mark their own topic as solved.
I can't really help you with this one though. I don't use Win11 and I don't use Location services.
-
@jcm63 You can change that by editing your first post and selecting whether you want the topic to be "Asked as question". Then you can mark one of the replies as a solution. I've changed your thread back into a regular one.
As for the issue, it looks like it's limited to your computer for some reason. I've been using Vivaldi on my Windows 11 laptop for a while, and I remembered to check the location on Google Maps occasionally (as I don't use it otherwise) whenever I moved, and it was always accurate. It looks like nobody else is reporting this except for you.
It's as if Windows kept revoking Vivaldi's access to the location data after some time - but I haven't seen anything like that. It would be helpful if we knew what you did after starting with a fresh profile (like what extensions you installed, whether you signed in to google, turned on the ad blocker, etc.)
Did you try checking other websites (like Bing Maps, OpenStreetMap or others) to see if they also show incorrect location? Was it wrong in the private window too?
-
@pafflick To answer your questions:
I have installed no new extensions since I have created a new profile (3 times in the last month).
Yes, I signed in to Google and location did work fine in Vivaldi on Google Maps for a bit, but then reverts to the incorrect location.
Other map websites (Bing and Open Maps) work fine and seem to stay working correctly.
In a private window, location shows correctly, as does location in other browsers and in Android. This is specific to Google Maps and Vivaldi on Windows 11.
My location is set to the correct one in my Google Account and on my Windows 11 laptop.
Hope that helps. It's not a big deal, but it drives me crazy. I have always been able to resolve every computer issue myself, this one's a tough one.
-
I have notice this myself from time to time. Always blamed the VPN and hard caching.
It would say I was in the office even after disabling the VPN. It would struggle to update the location. But today is fine. Even with VPN turned on it says I'm not in the office.
Maybe it is a privacy setting on Windows 11. Maybe Vivaldi is not getting full location update or something.
-
Vivaldi is using the Windows Standard Location set or the location detected by internet access IP and for a better resolution WLAN in neighbourhood. And you should know some Windows Privacy settings can disable access on this data.
