Solved Address bar auto-complete has been ruined
-
I'm one of the folk early on in this thread complaining - however after a few months now I've come to like the way it is WITHOUT auto-complete in the URL bar itself, meaning you NEVER hit the wrong result.
I like the way it splits the possible results into typed history and browser history - these make great sense - the trade-off is that you'll never be able to just type a few letters and just have your favourite site ready in the URL, you'll always need to tap down a few times to get to it.
But this is where the brain rewiring is required - the URL bar isn't meant for your favourite stuff, it's meant as a history of things you've done and want to recall, more based on recency (I think). If you want to have favourites then there's better ways to do it with bookmarks and shortcuts etc.

Not saying it's perfect or even better - but it makes sense now, when I'm typing something I know I've done before, the URL bar knows whether I typed it or visited it, and the more stuff I type into the URL as a "search" the more specific and accurate it is.

I used to be fine with the autocomplete. It had issues but still more benefits. Now it is just super frustrating so you're right, time to just give up on it since it took this long to get some minor fixes to the address bar so who knows how long until auto complete will be any good. I had actually disabled the drop-down when auto-complete wasn't trash.

I used to have auto-complete enabled, but i can't really recall using it all that much. But once this whole drama started I disabled it as someone suggested and have found things are working great just with the dropdown.

Nothing personal, but this thread is about wanting autocomplete to work correctly. Those who prefer not having autocomplete at all, are irrelevant and contribute nothing to this discussion.

If you read between the lines you'll see that I was saying that it's so bad that people are suggesting to disable it, and that users are actually disabling it because it's so useless.
The fact that it's a common feature across all browsers that's been around for years and disabling it is the "fix" doesn't bode well when new users find out after migrating to Vivaldi.
-
@7twenty History always repeat itself, when a common/new feature is bugged & the dev didn't fixed it quickly, eventually most user will stop using it or avoid using it, then over time the feature is pretty much dead even when it's finally fixed months/years down the road.
Anyone still using popup window? How about the Website popup notifications? And the build-in Autoplay blocker? Now it's the same situation with the Addressfield's auto-complete feature, once people disabled 'em, they rarely will re-enable it when they have get used to live without 'em.

Vivaldi address auto-complete is really annoying, I hope Vivaldi team fixes this soon... I only want to auto-complete domain name, then optionally I can auto-complete path later...

@RichardDick Have you seen, some fixes are in 5.7.2921.63 Stable?
-
@DoctorG I was using "5.7.2921.60" but I just updated to "5.7.2921.63". And it looks like the issue was fixed.
-
@RichardDick Fine. Now, be happy

We have implemented 40 bug fixes in our recent updates for issues related to the address bar (many of which were aimed at improving the autocomplete feature). I believe most issues reported in this thread have been resolved already (like the one reported in the first post), though there might be some that still require some work. To make it easier to follow up on such reports, please start a new topic (use search to make sure it wasn't reported already) or send a bug report.
