Anyone on Mastodon?
-
@jane-n , I have just registered and I follow Vivaldi in Mastodon, in Lemmy there is also a Vivaldi thread, for those who want to participate there too (it is somewhat desert with few who follow, I am @Zerush there)
Lemmy also is a OpenSource federated social network, it's very similar in it's UI with Reddit.
-
I have also just registered on Mastodon and now also follow Vivaldi
-
I wish you the best there. I'd like to follow, but I had a horrible experience on Mastodon and recommend them to no one.
-
Mastodon is certainly not very comfortable to handle, with redirects to answer a post and things like that. Diaspora, Friendica, Lemmy, Raddle are much better in this regard, with a used UI as it is also found on other social networks, Twitter, Reddit, etc., without so much trouble.
-
There definitely is a learning curve to Mastodon. I recommend reading this brief overview of Mastodon, published on BBC, https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-63534240, which will answer the basic questions.
Also, it's very nice to see hundreds of people following Vivaldi on Mastodon already.
In addition to Vivaldi's account, some team members, like Ruari and Jon, have been checking out Mastodon as well.
-
@jane-n Apparently, there's Eternal September on many Mastodon instances these days, as the relatively quiet backwaters have to deal with a massive influx of refugees from that dead bird network.
From the SDF Board:
SUBJECT: .. Is mastodon.sdf.org down for everybody? DATE: 06-Nov-22 22:22:31 HOST: sverige We've jumped up to 14000+ active users in just the last week (last time I looked at the numbers). Poor server is screaming right now...
"No no he's not dead, he's, he's restin'! Remarkable bird, the Norwegian Blue, idn'it, ay? Beautiful plumage!"
-
All the server admins indeed have their hands full these days.

Twitter is not Losing Users
Twitter sees all-time high user growth. As usual, the Mainstream Media has an agenda to push. They were trolled beautifully by Rahul Ligma and Daniel Johnson.
Interestingly enough, mainstream media reports over the past few days have pushed the idea that users are leaving Twitter en masse since Musk took over the company. These reports came following a post from the MIT Technology Review, which noted that Bot Sentinel estimates suggest that over 875,000 users deactivated their accounts between October 27 and November 1, while half a million more were suspended. Other reports also pushed the idea that Twitter was losing its users to rival Mastodon.
When this storm in a teacup is over, Twitter will likely become a major platform for free speech and useful content.
-
@Pesala Twitter is losing advertisers, that is their current issue and one that could prove fatal. Whether that can be turned around will be the deciding factor.

As does the right‐wing media, if you can’t see that, you’re lost.

Or hate speech and fake news, isn’t that the same anyway? People these days seem to think they have a right to believe what is a truth or a fact and choose to view/consume media which aligns with their made up truths and facts, doesn’t matter where they are on the political spectrum.

They are building a business plan that does not depend on advertisers. Otherwise, they will be in the same boat as the mainstream media.
-
@Pesala I don’t think a 7.99 $ blue thing for verified accounts and firing half of your staff is a viable way to completely replace advertisers. If that’s the plan, I’d argue this will fail, but we’ll see.
-
I've been on Mastodon for a few years now (off and on). I keep trying to get into it but for some reason it just doesn't really grab me.
-
I have an account there but seldom use it. Now that I know V is there I will try to get back into it,
Very steep learning curve I have found. Will check the BBC link mentioned previously to see if it will help this old dog learn a new trick

@jane.n Perhaps the Vivaldi mastodon account should be listed alongside the other social platforms in the vivaldi.com and vivaldi.net pages. I mean these places:
EDIT: And probably also in the https://vivaldi.com/social/ page (I just learned that this exists).
-
@greybeard , Mastodon is certainly not the most userfriendly, I have an account there, but I would be glad if Vivaldi had found another network, for example Diaspora or Friendica, which have a much more similar management to the usual social networks, such as Twitter, but they are decentralized and federal like Mastodon. There is also a Vivaldi thread on Lemmy*, another decentralized network which I use and similar in its UI and handling to Reddit.
In any case it is necessary that Vivaldi moves to these sites that respect privacy, which Facebook&cia, Twitter (soon possibly a paid service) and Reddit certainly do not. -
@AltCode Yes, we'll be updating them soon.
-
I am on another Mastadon server / instance and tried to follow Vivaldi. But the follow button says 'Follow Requested' and has been this way for some time. I am somewhat new to this platform so don't know if this is normal or not.
Also, why is Vivaldi not on MeWe it is a good alternative to Mastadon and easier to use I think. You even recommend in in this article
https://vivaldi.com/blog/private-apps-remote-work/I think a Vivaldi group in MeWe would be a great benefit to the Brand.
-
@fjc1029 , I was in the past in MeWe, but a long time ago and I don't know if my account is still worth it. Anyway, it is a somewhat more official site with good privacy-
I'm going to check it out, in any case it's certainly better than FB, Twitter, Reddit and others that are outright spyware.Edit:Yes my account is still active mewe.com/i/zergrush

As you might have seen from today's blog post we started to like Mastodon... a lot. So we created a new instance we're calling Vivaldi Social.
To get started, all you have to do is log in with your Vivaldi account on https://social.vivaldi.net.@fjc1029 I recommend following this account https://social.vivaldi.net/@Vivaldi. We moved the account from mastodon.online to our own instance.
-
@jane-n I see that with the official launch of Vivaldi Social, these have been updated
Though it seems that one place was missed. Under every blog post, there is the "share article" buttons.
I'd wager having one for mastodon would be a good idea as well.
Though perhaps that might be tricky, because it should ideally be instance agnostic; I was able to create a similar url for Vivaldi Social by working off of the twitter one:
https://social.vivaldi.net/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvivaldi.com%2Fblog%2Fnews%2Fvivaldi-social-a-new-mastodon-instance%2F&text=Introducing%20Vivaldi%20Social,%20your%20new%20federated%20social-networking%20home
EDIT: That was mighty fast! Though as I mentioned, the button will not work if you are in a different Mastodon instance...
