Silent Mail Notifications and Clock Alarms

Longstanding issue and I've obviously missed something on 2 Win10Home64 machines (both with IntelAudio). Daily driver runs stable (2753.47) and the other runs snappie 2770.3 (both are Standalone with no 3rd-party extensions or customisations) but I don't recollect notification sounds ever being heard on either (although media content within V is fine).
Win10 Focus Assist is off. In 'Settings/Notifications & actions' 'Notifications' is 'On' and sounds are allowed. The list under 'Get notifications from these apps' does not include Vivaldi.
M3 settings have Mail Notifications Enabled with Play Sound checked. Context menu of clock has a Notification Sound selected but alarms/countdowns remain silent.
I've found some threads on these forums regarding this matter but they tend to end with the problem just disappearing (sometimes explicitly linked to a Windows Update). I've waited and waited but no such luck here.
