Dark Reader extension causes web panels to break (Other dark mode addons too)
-
Hi.
I have a bunch of things in my side panel and since the new update all the panel items show in dark mode except that most items dont do the dark mode very well and are just screwed up.
FX Currency converter is a mix of light and dark.
Spotify doesnt show any cover art and is just a page of black with words.
Whatsapp and Notion are just completely black pagesAnyone else experiencing these problems?
On further investigation it appears to be Dark Reader is now influencing the side panel.
When I disable Dark Reader and restart Vivaldi all is back to normal.
I have found a workaround. Open all items one after the other with Dark Reader diabled. After all items have been opened once THEN re-enable Dark Reader.
I think when I enabled Vivaldi mail it caused Dark Reader to affect the side panel but Im not sure.

Spoke too soon. The screwed up side panel comes back.
So basically Vivaldi is no longer compatible with Dark Reader.
You have to choose either Dark reader and a broken side panel. Or a working side panel and bright webpages.

@thedatabug Hi! Dark Reader is a pretty popular extensions around here, I'm sure more people will experience this. Please report a bug, make sure to test and reproduce in a clean profile and provide step-by-step instruction on how it can be tested. Make sure to include several example sites, preferably without a login requirement, to help the team figure out the problem.
Please read:
carefully and report the bug to Vivaldi bugtracker
Also -- I'm not so sure this started in 5.4. A quick test with Spotify in 5.3 and 5.2 shows the same blank dark page with Dark Reader installed. FX Converter looks fine in both though, I don't have an account on those other sites. Spotify might not be the best example, since it's already pretty much dark (maybe depending on OS theme setting).
Lastly, please edit your first post to give a more descriptive title mentioning it's a problem with Dark Reader, specifically and not web panels in general.

@Pathduck
I have created a new Profile and installed just Dark Reader and a couple of panels. Namely Gmail, contacts and calendar. At first they where white but quickly turned dark.I use Dark Reader selectively. I have it set to only darkening pages I add to it. I prefer Gmail to be white as it doesn't look so great dark (IMO). But with the panel it turns dark no matter what Dark reader is set to. Even if I switch dark mode off in Dark Reader the panel is still dark.
Aslo It wont let me edit the title of my post. It says I have to wait before I can edit.

@thedatabug Yeah, you probably needed some upvotes/posts before being allowed to edit, it's a spam countermeasure. Try again (I did a quick edit but do it yourself).

I had been facing the same issue until a minute ago.
I tried opening Vivaldi after deleting the extension and now everything works like before. The side panel is back as good but at the cost of my Dark Reader settings/cookies

@Dizzaztxr Hi, I don't have a Twitch account so hard for me to test, but I tried adding a couple stream chats to web panels in 5.4 and they seem to work fine:
This is using the "popout" chat URL, like
https://www.twitch.tv/popout/summit1g/chat?popout=
Are you using some kind of extension like Dark Reader? Others have reported issues with Dark Reader and panels. Or other extensions that might influence this?
Please try all the troubleshooting steps, including testing in a clean profile and disabling extensions:

@Dizzaztxr OK so it's the same as:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/78238/dark-reader-extension-causes-web-panels-to-break
I will merge the topics.I recommend creating a bug report, even if extension incompatibility issues are probably not high on the priorities. It might help developers figure out where the problem lies, as web panels are supposed to work just like regular pages.

@Dizzaztxr said in Dark Reader extension causes web panels to break:
So it was Dark Reader, but the strange part is, it's not enabled on Twitch. Just having the Dark Reader extension on, causes the chat box to be grey, even when the extension is disabled for Twitch.
I have to disable the extension fully in the extensions tab to show chat in the panel section now. It's not really a big deal as most sites nowadays have night mode, but it's odd how the extension messes with it even though it's not used by the site.
Yeh this is what Ive found too. Other Dark mode addons have the same effect. It doesnt even matter if you switch Dark Reader off in Dark Readers settings. While Dark Reader is enabled it will screw up your side panel. I hope this will get fixed as I really like Dark reader and I need my panels.
For now I will have to suffer with eye burningly bright websites :).

All now is Ok. Dark Reader is updated:

@barbudo2005 I guess it was just an unlucky set of circumstances - new Vivaldi version, bug in extension
