Filters not updating
-
Hi,
Mail filter is showing emails (including content) that should not exist. To reproduce this:
- I created a filter on a from address to add a label: filter displays the correct results
- I checked the filtered emails are also present in the "All mail" folder
- I deleted the emails from that address in the third party client (gmail.com)
- I emptied the trash in the thrird party client
- In the Vivaldi client "All mail" no longer shows the emails from that address and they are also not in "Bin"
- However the filter does still show the deleted emails including content.
Is there a way to update the filter and where are these emails being stored?
Regards,

I believe the behaviour observed is correct…
My understanding is that if Vivaldi Mail has a local copy of a message that is later permanently deleted from an email server it is :
-
marked as internal, i.e. no longer on server
-
and the local copy placed in Trash folder
FYI visibility of deleted messages can be controlled via the the Show Deleted Items button, highlighted below:

Thanks for the reply. If what you say is correct I would be reluctant to use Vivaldi mail. Permanently deleted mail should be just that and local copies should not be retained using up space (in some unknown location) and creating security issues. While I can control their visibility in the filter using the button you suggest I cannot see them in any trash folder.
I have found a similar issue with the "Bin" folder in Vivaldi which displays emails it attributes to the [google mail]/Bin but the bin on the server is empty. When I emptied the trash on the gmail server many items did vanish from the Vivaldi bin - but not all and those that did not vanish do not appear on a search on the server. Also, being a folder rather than a filter there is no "Show deleted items" button that you mentioned to control their visibility and in fact they remain visible even if all the available show icons are reset.
My overall impression of Vivaldi mail so far is that it has some good ideas but does not have the tools to control emails satisfactorily. If that is a misunderstanding on my part I hope to be corrected.

@Olmy said in Filters not updating:
I cannot see them in any trash folder.
But you do see them in the Trash view in the "all messages" section? The email should vanish if you right click that view and choose to empty trash.
The design choice is explained in the launch blog post of the technical preview here in the section "local backup in your trash can" https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-mail-technical-preview/

@WildEnte No, they only appear in filters view with view trash turned on. The trash section of all mail shows several hundred other emails which are not in Vivaldi's "bin" or the server trash folder. Sorry but I really have no idea what is going on. I have found yet more issues that I do not want to spend more time going into. Thanks for sending me the blog post link. I appreciate the logic of retaining a local copy of emails permanently deleted on the server to avoid accidental loss but it is not functionality I would personally want.
I think I am going to call it a day on this and purge anything Vivaldi from my system hopefully thereby deleting any local copies of anything Vivaldi has put there, reinstall the browser (which I do like) and revert to my previous email client which, while not perfect, at least behaves in a way I can understand.

Cannot reproduce what you are experiencing.
Do consider raising the issues found here and/or submitting feature requests to address them; hopefully future iterations of Vivaldi Mail will more than meet your needs.

@Olmy if you delete an account in Vivaldi's settings, it will ask you whether or not you want to delete all locally stored emails (it will not delete emails on your server)
-
@WildEnte Thanks but I am not sure that is true. I just deleted all my accounts in Vivaldi's settings and selected the option to delete all emails from disc on each. It said "deleting...". After it completed I checked the location where it was storing emails locally on disc and the data are still there in .eml format which I can open in another client.

Issue is reproducible in both stable and snapshot. Please consider raising as bug.
