POP Setup
-
I am trying to set up POP accounts.
Using a little used outlook account for a dry run, I copied the pop) server settings etc from Thunderbird. These were standard Outlook (the light version, not the Office version) Vivaldi didn't appear to recognise them, the confirmation box was greyed out.
Has anybody got an idea why?
Also I cannot find out where Vivaldi wants to store those emails in the filing system and whether that is moveable. -
@MickBeaman welcome to the forum!
Did you try just to enter your email address and password and let Vivaldi try to autoconfigure the server settings?
Does the server require authentication via StartTLS? (which is not implemented yet)
Can you post a screenshot of your server settings with your email address made unrecognizable?
-
Thanks. I did a manual setup copying the Thunderbird settings. I don't see a means of attaching a screenshot here but you can find it via this OneDrive link. I hope! Security was SSL/TLS
Frankly, as a fully paid up crusty old git, I haven't a clue what that means.

@MickBeaman if you scroll down just a little there might be the butt on you are looking for? (you might want to delete that screenshot on your onedrive, it shows your full email address. Just leads to more spam)
If that doesn't work, check out the microsoft account section in https://help.vivaldi.com/mail/mail-get-started/add-and-manage-mail-accounts/#Add_an_account

Thanks. I haven't tried again, but from memory the scroll down took me to the confirmation button that was greyed out, hence the problem.
I have duly deleted the snapshot and thanks again for taking the precaution for me!!!

@MickBeaman Hi there, looking at your image I notice a couple things:
- You are trying to use
smtp.gmail.com
for SMTP with youroutlook.com
email as username:
This will will not work and will lead to an authentication error. It is recommended to use the settings as specified here:
https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/options/mail/accounts/popImap
- You seem to have another
@outlook.com
address specified above, what's that account settings and does it work?
These settings work for me, they are not exact the same as the MS docs, but work:
- You are trying to use
-
Thanks. As it stands, my Outlook account on Vivaldi is IMAP. I assumed that I would simply need to create a second POP account and could then delete the IMAP.
I aim to try the suggested settings later today and thanks for the help, I do appreciate it.

AFAICS at present Vivaldi Mail will only let you add one account per an email account, i.e. if an account for
[email protected]
is already setup then another cannot be added and this is communicated in the UI by making Continue not selectable as highlighted below:
To add the POP3 account for
[email protected]
it would first be necessary to delete the existing (IMAP) account after making sure adequate backups exists should recovery be necessary -
@Pathduck
I am grateful but the linked MS settings are, I believe, for the full Outlook application and not the 'Live' version which replaced hotmail. In any event I am afraid that they are not working for me. -
@MickBeaman The documentation is about connecting a mail client to your Outlook mail account. Vivaldi is a mail client, just like Outlook.
The settings work for me. Did you read the information posted above about you trying to use Gmail as outbound server (which won't work) and trying to add a second account with the same email, which also won't work?
-
I did thanks, that was helpful, it moved me forward and I am grateful for your time. The gmail reference was a error that I had spotted but following your advice I deleted the outlook imap account. What really puzzles me is that the settings I am trying, work ok in Thunderbird. I am now away for a few days but on return am going to try again, fresh start, and might test out gmail settings instead.
-
@MickBeaman I suggest that then you start off with Vivaldi autodetecting the required server settings, such that you only have to deal with remembering your password.

Thunderbird does not have the limitation mentioned earlier so adding accounts to access
antonio@example
.com viaIMAP
andPOP3
is not an issue ― hopefully a future iteration of Vivaldi Mail will correct this.BTW do consider trying Vivaldi's Import from Applications or Files… option by:
- press F2 key
- type
import
and then under Commands select Import from Applications or Files… - from the From field drop down list select Thunderbird
- select the accounts you wish to import; if an IMAP and POP3 account reference the same account only the first instance will be imported
- select Start Import

Thank you. Removing the other account did indeed clear the greyed out box issue, so I am one step further ahead now. Still can't get login though!
