Solved Setting up a Sky / Yahoo email account on Vivaldi
-
Hello,
This is a HOW TO posting, not a request for help.I am based in the United Kingdom and have two active email systems.
My main one uses my own domain, is hosted by a third party and accessed using Outlook running on Windows 8.1. I am happy with that. The second email is hosted by Yahoo, but branded as the media company Sky, such that I have an email address in the format: [email protected]
I use this as a general backup to my main email but is essential for a few contacts whose email systems seem unable to talk with my main email provider.
I have been accessing this backup email system via a Sky logon, but also directly using a Yahoo logon. Both work and both suffer the inconveniences of a webmail system requiring a separate logon. Now that Vivaldi has a fully operational email system I thought it would help me to operate my backup email system in a more straightforward manner.
The Vivaldi Mail Help files provide extensive notes on connecting to different email services, including Yahoo. They explain that we need to request Yahoo to create a special 'app password'. The notes begin:
"
First log in to your Yahoo account’s security page on
https://login.yahoo.com/account/security.
On the page, go to App Password > Generate app password > Get started.
"
Straightforward? Of course - to READ.
However when I go to my Yahoo account security page, there is a check security option at the top which says nothing much.
Below that the only option provided is to Change my password. No other option appears and the page is otherwise empty. I looked every else on my account, but the Generate app password option does not appear. The Yahoo help files referenced on this page say the same as the Vivaldi description, with a link, but that link only opens my mostly empty account page.A web search found a different set of Sky help files on the same subject.
https://www.sky.com/help/articles/getting-started-with-sky-yahoo-mail
This says much the same, but in this case the Generate app password link actually takes me to a web page that does the deed. After answering a few questions such as Operating system, it gives me the 16 character password.
I used this app password in the Vivaldi Mail setup. It was accepted and validated by Yahoo after which the Vivaldi Mail screen opens WITH AN ERROR MESSAGE!
"Mail client startup failed. Error: TypeError Cannot assign to read only property '1' of string 'Flags'"Next I upgraded my Vivaldi 5.3 to the latest 'Minor Update(6)' because the (6) Change Log referred to fixing a Mail startup problem for some users.
I can confirm Vivaldi 5.3.2679.58 64bit now WORKS for my [email protected] email.
Hooray! Well done the Vivaldi team.Gerard
