Solved Future Vivaldi updates
-
I updated Chrome and Brave to latest stable versions on 5/9/22. After downloading each gave a notification that future updates will no longer be available for OS X 10.11.6
Will Vivaldi follow suit in the near future?( downloaded chrome # 102.0.5005.6)
( Brave # 102.0.5005.61)
To get future updates will need mac0S 10.13 or later.I have Vivaldi # 5.2.2623.48 Stable
Thank you

@tonyd1 I don't think that the Vivaldi team will have any choice but to also raise the minimum system requirements for Mac. This is primarily due to the following Chromium change(s): https://crbug.com/1322548
Basically, they are ripping out and refactoring quite a bit of Chromium code and the new code changes will require macOS 10.13 or later. These changes are also blocking Issue 1313180, which is currently hidden, so the code rework is probably being done for security reasons... which also means that it won't be feasible or desirable to revert any of these changes.

Why not update your Mac as far as High Sierra? You would get a little more service with updated apps that way.

Thank you,
I’m not in position to upgrade the OS.
El Capitan is the last for my Mac. So until I can afford a newer refur Mac…Anyway thanks for your reply

I'm in the same boat as @tonyd1, except that I'm adamant about keeping El Capitan...
Upgrading to, say, Apple silicone makes sense -- even to me: make the iron as good as you can; but the integration with iOS is an unnecessary waste of resources (meaning that such would be better used to run the system faster and more efficiently:) And I've yet to see an application that requires a serious rewrite of the OS.
Ideally -from my POV- an operating system should serve as a platform, capable of "running" any flavor of OS desired!? (A universal OS, if you will; given the hardware advances and software technologies, there's little reason not to emulate to one's heart's content:)But I appreciate the difficulties for a company like Vivaldi: The choice to rely on the Chromium Project makes sense.
One way or another I'll manage, to do things my way. For now, thanks for a great product, and for the ease with which it accommodates my peculiar style of "browsing". -

El Capitan is the last for my Mac. So until I can afford a newer refur Mac…I'm honestly truly not trolling you; i'm genuinely trying to opine a possible option for you. Is migrating your imminently obsolete OS on your current hardware to Linux something you'd be willing & able to consider? Yes ofc you'd have a learning curve, but afterwards, your current HW with new OS would support you with V for years.

Keep in mind that Apple is currently only providing security updates for macOS Catalina, Big Sur and Monterey... and in recent months, even Catalina and Big Sur were either late in getting some critical updates or did not get them at all. You are taking a huge risk running older and unsupported versions of macOS.

@guigirl I have yet to find Linux that I can install on Macs.
I wanted to but all info found was for install on PC's.I do not believe that you are trolling me.
You suggested a possible option. I appreciate that. Thanks

@xyzzy I knew that day would come & do not expect V to support older operating systems for ever.
I tried downloading V 5.3 this eve. After checking for
an update.. I get a dialog saying I'm up to date. with 5.2.2623.48 (Stable channel) (x86_64).
After checking system requirements 10.11.6 + is still supported at this time. How to update to 5.3?Thanks for info/links to Chromium. I realize my older mac is even listed as obsolete & there are security risks. But this what I have at the moment. I just hope to keep my main & favorite browser while possible.
Thank you

@guigirl I would like to try a Linux distro. I've yet to find how to do so on a Mac. All the info I find is for PC's
-
@tonyd1 That might be because the updater is paused. They are being more cautious with this update.
See https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/586588 for an explanation.

OK, i now give up. My search results above are explicitly FOR MACS. I do not understand your intransigence on that.
-
@nomadic Thanks for that info. I'll try again in a day or two
-
@tonyd1 It may or may not be possible to install Linux on your Mac. It all depends on which Mac model you have and the level/quality of support that is available for the hardware/chipsets that Apple used when they designed your system.

I also used to have an older MacBook Pro, which I loved, but didn't feel safe running an OS that was no longer receiving security updates.
I looked at:
- running Windows on the bare hardware (via Boot Camp)
- various Linux options
- applying patches to newer versions macOS so that it would run on older hardware
I was prepared to evaluate all three options. However, before I could test any of the above, my MacBook Pro died suddenly... and that's an eventuality that you may need to prepare for as well.
I needed to get a new system up and running, FAST, and ended up resurrecting some old hardware that was sitting on a shelf in my basement. The old hardware still had ample resources to run a heavyweight (GNOME/KDE) Linux distro, but I opted to run an XFCE desktop instead. Vivaldi worked exceptionally well and, in some cases, it ran even better than it did on my old Mac.
Linux is a great alternative to Windows and macOS, and all three have their pros and cons... and their own maddening limitations. Hopefully you can find an option that works well for you that also gets regular security updates.

@guigirl (Remind me to tell you of my recent travail...:)
I lost half of my HD space... 🥵
I still intend to install some form of Linux, as an alternate boot... (I'd prefer to run concurrent-ly: Advice, anyone?) But --
Just me: Does anyone have any experience "sandboxing" OS X??! -

Oh, i couldn't possibly do that. It'd mean going wilfully OT, & i pride myself on never ever ever going OT... which reminds me of a funny story...

@guigirl Meet me in St. Louis, Gooey... :)?

@OakdaleFTL Sorry, i have to wash my hair that night.

I run Linux (and various other OS's) on my Mac Mini 2012 on Mojave via VirtualBox.
It does help to have a surplus of ram and disk space as you are basically running a 2nd OS environment simultaneously with MacOS and you have to set aside some storage and ram resources to do so.
