Delayed reaction to typing an address in a new tab
-
I am trying to migrate from O browser to Vivaldi, but there is a recurring problem where the first one or two letters typed in the address bar do not appear.
When it happens:
- I use ctrl+t to open a new tab ( speeddial )
- I start typing address characters / search terms immediately ( I type pretty fast )
When it doesn't happen:
- When I close the speed dial after the first failed attempt, and retry a second later
In O, the interface had sometimes a display delay(<0.5s), but typed characters were registered in the new tab. In Vivaldi sometimes they are typed in the text field of the previous tab if it was selected, or they are not saved anywhere.
Hardware: i7 4770 (idle)
Vivaldi: 5.2.2623.46
Speedial with ~20 tabs(half of them are directories with 10-50 pages)
Same extensions as in O with identical settings(tampermonkey, ublock - of those that can affect every page ) -
Hi,
i report very annyoning behavior of address bar. When I open new tab by keyboard shortcut and then immediately start typing url address, I must wait a second until I can type url address, otherwise some letters missed. It is very annyoning, are you abble to fix it? Thank you.

@izero
Hi, I can write immediately when I open a new tab with Ctrl+T.
Please add your Vivaldi, Windows version and your system specs.
My specs are in my signature.
A forum thread in not a bug report but may we can solve your issue.
Some things can slowdown Vivaldi, animated UI, really big history, long download list and often a third party anti virus software.Cheers, mib

Hi,
Vivaldi 5.2.2623.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Windows 10 Version 1903 (Build 18362.356)
AMD Ryzen 6700, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD.I have same (bookmarks, long history etc.) in Opera and there is no problem. I imported all from Opera to Vivaldi.

@izero
Please search for two settings in settings > search:
hardware
For "Hardware Acceleration"
animation
For "Use Animation"
Disable both, restart Vivaldi.Cheers, mib
EDIT: Some user gave a hint to disable additional Info in the history view: -
Hello, @stormL, and welcome to our community!
This could be an issue on a low-spec machine, but I don't think it could be the case here. Could you please try repeating the same tests using a guest window or a clean profile?
-
@pafflick Thanks for the suggestions, I checked on a new profile, the problem was not triggered in 24/25 of attempts.
After that I only imported bookmarks, and set my previous speeddial and the problem is back to 1 in 3 tries.
I deleted 3 biggest folders from speeddial ( 50 links in each ) problem still exists.
After that i deleted speeddial and use new one with single link and problem was almost gone but some sites are still triggering it back.
There is one site that is triggering it often even on clean new profile: https://www.wykop.pl/ - i wait for site to load, then ads shows up and after that in 20% cases even opening a new tab can slow down to 1 second. ( CPU load for vivaldi is hovering between 10-40% )
Even on guest profile without speed dial it is lagging sometimes - rare but still, probably related to video ads. (in the worst case, the 4th typed letter appeared in the address bar)Now writing this post copying the address in a new tab sometimes responded the second time I used CTRL+V, extremely annoying.
In comparison, O, registers typed string in the address bar even when the speeddial has not yet rendered in its entirety. Even when in background there is game running and GUI slowdown is visible. V has problems when system is idle.
I'll add that switching between a new tab, back to website and then a new tab again - the problem almost doesn't occur, but after switching to few other tabs problem returns.
i have ~900 URLs in bookmarks, ~200 of that in subdirectories of speeddial.

@stormL My Ctrl+T opens a dedicated web page which is always cached in Vivaldi and usually already open in another tab. Right now if I try I can type two or three chars toward the address bar before it begins seeing them.
But it seems every update changes this behavior a bit. Twice already this year an update stopped the existing address in the address bar from being selected when the tab opened, so my typing got added to it. Right now they have fixed that again, but the amount of time I have to wait before typing changes with the updates.
Seems to be a hotbed of competing "fixes" affecting this tiny bit of functionality. Somebody needs to rethink the way it works, instead of just hacking on bits of it.
(Speaking of hacking, this compose window used to be much wider, as wide as the forum page. That up-down arrow above it makes it taller, but seems no way to control width. I guess somebody thinks this is an improvement?)

@stormL , cc: @LorenAmelang All you need to do is to free your mind from the shackles of Chropera, drop the bad habits you were accustomed to = opening a new tab, consuming more memory and cluttering the tab bar, and use the superior way Vivaldi offers...

@npro Interesting. Seems a good alternative for typing a search with the default engine, but anything else becomes much more complex. Like I can type <Ctrl+t>no<Enter> and be on Notion. With F2 it is F2noti plus nine down arrows or reaching for the mouse.
Somehow the address bar knows my habits. Maybe F2 would learn them eventually? OK, tried the Settings for Quick Commands. If I turn off Bookmarks, that complex route to Notion goes away, I can only search for Notion after typing the full name. But my Bookmarks doesn't show Notion at all! I turned off Notes, but all the options are now about Notes! Maybe those checkboxes don't do what it seems they should?
And F2 creates new tabs with new resource consumption, just like Ctrl+t - for me...

@LorenAmelang about width when posting: turn off the preview, its top right in the litte window on the right.

This. I can access all pages i use just by typing 1-2 letters and pressing enter. Or sometimes additional arrow down. Other subpages i frequently access are stored in speeddial. Custom search engines ( i use ~10 of them, from subreddit search to translators) are also great.
Tried F2 it was not it for me.
@npro Chr in Chropera is a reason i try to switch ( I've been using O since you can pay to remove a banner ).
But for now, every single browser is far behind. V was the closest, although it lacks full sidebar integration with popular services(spotify auto pause, using domain zoom level ).
I've almost gotten used to it if it weren't for those ctrl+t lagsSomething I work on 80% of my time needs to be 100% responsive for me.
-
@bariton If I hide the preview I will definitely end up posting uncaught glitches! Both views used to fit side by side using my full width. Much nicer!
-
@LorenAmelang Now I understand, newer saw the full width. I just switch back and forth to catch the glitches : )

Hi,
I just installed Vivaldi-stable in my
Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)
, usingapt
.
Below are the exact specs:Issue: Whenever I start typing in the address bar (usually, it's a search text), the characters don't appear immediately. I have to wait for 2-3 secs to ensure what I've typed is correct.
Note that this happens only in the Address bar. I can see the typed characters instantly in the web pages. However, it takes sometime to load the start page too (btw, Blank page is selected as start page).
I have read some solutions & tried them too.
Hardware acceleration
disabled.Animations
disabled.Lazy load
enabled.Subtle
theme selected.about:blank
is set as Start page.Search in Address Field
is selected. (All other search options are disabled, incl.Allow Search Suggestions
.Show Drop-Down when Typing
is not selected. (hope this will remove the burden on browser to look for any history/bookmark/visited pages/etc).- Note: I chose only the
essential
version, during installation (i.e. without web panels, notes, mail, etc). - I even created a new profile after facing this issue. However, the issue persists on this profile too.
The only thing that could be of concern is (per my knowledge), I have 5.2 MB of bookmarks.
However, since I have removed any suggestion options (point-7 above), it shouldn't matter, I believe. At least, not when typing in the address bar.
There's a chance it might slow-down loading of Vivaldi. that is, if 5.2 MB is considered a big size. However, I'm not too certain of it.
-
@vlan1337 You disabled search suggestions, which includes bookmarks as an option. This should guarantee nothing is being looked up in the background. Moreover you created a new profile, which should only contain default bookmarks, therefore we can rule this out. However, I canβt reproduce your issue. For me typing in the address field is instant. This is not a feature request, I will request a move.
-
@luetage Thanks.
I too didn't face this issue, when I used to have Vivaldi sometime back. And, I had bookmarks of similar size (may be, more even).
Although I created a new profile, I did import my bookmarks back. Do you mean, this issue is more likely due to the bookmarks?
And, what exactly do you mean by 'move'.... just keep working with it, as is? Or, should I report this as a bug? Pls explain.
-
@vlan1337 I reported this topic, it might get moved at some point by moderator. You donβt have to worry about it.
Please try on a fresh profile without importing your bookmarks.
