Archive differences Vivaldi Mail, Thunderbird, RoundCube webmail
-
I noticed some differences (incompatibilities?) between Vivaldi Mail, Thunderbird and my RoundCube webmail view on the IMAP server.
- On the IMAP server I had initially assigned the folder "Archive" as the designated IMAP archive folder
- While I was working with Thunderbird, it created its own "Archives" folder structure on the IMAP server
- So, in RoundCube I reassigned the designated IMAP Archives folder to the folder structure "Archives" with subfolders per year
- Now in Vivaldi Mail, I notice that it does not recognize/acknowledge the designated "Archives" folder and has created its own "Archive", which I think is not a folder but possibly a label?
Can anyone shine a light on (different methods of) Archiving?

@s_paternotte Yes, we are looking into this. Different clients use different methods. As you have noticed, Thunderbird does use the plural form of the word Archive as its name and it has sub-folders. We had not accounted for that. We can create a missing Archive folder on the fly, as those clients are doing, but we can not denote that new folder to have special-use attribute 'Archive' as not all mail servers support such a command from the client. My testing of Thunderbird and Evolution shows that they create these so-called Archive folders but the server has no notion of them being folders of type/special-use Archive. They are merely common folders of type Other that the clients then use as Archive folders. Great fun
but we will try to come up with some solution that is convenient for our users and in sync with other clients as much as we can.

So when Thunderbird decided to create the "Archives" folder structure it failed to check with the server if a dedicated archives folder was already in place. (Bad birdy)
Is it possible for an email cliënt to query the archiving folder with the imap server?
And is it possible for an email cliënt to negotiate the archiving folder to be used with the imap server?I will do a check on how my Roundcube webmail handles archiving with the Archives folder structure created by TB.

Yes, Archiving a message in my RoundCube webmail (at the server) moves it neatly into the IMAP folder Archives\2022
Vivaldi 5.2.2623.41 (Stable channel) (64-bits) appears to be missing the Archive action other than to use the manual Move to folder Archives.2022.
(BTW, when will the dot seperator be replaced by a slash?) -
@s_paternotte As you may have noticed, there is neither a standard definition, nor handling for the attribute "archive" between providers, mail clients, or webmail services. Everyone handles it differently, and everyone thinks it means something different.
