Solved Bookmarks and Downloads columns
-
I like using Vivaldi, but it can be confusing and fustrating. I had my bookmarks and downloads in columnar form on the left side if my page, but did something that caused them to disappear. I have searched through the arcane "settings" but don't understand how to restore the browser to its former state. I will sincerely appreciate any assistance.

@ayespy I understand re the buttons. The "f nmbered" buttons are the ones I have been trying unsuccessfully. And there is no Status Bar at the bottom or anywhere else on my browser EUREKA!!!!!!! I went into the Start Page Settings, entered status bar in the search box - and the bar at the bottom appeared with a "show or hide panel" option. I selected show and have my bookmarks back. Thank you very much for your patience. I am 95 and because I have AMD in my left eye I use the "dark mode" - black background, white letters - which makes selecting buttons, etc. problematical. Thanks again, ayespy.

@jfh F4 will toggle the Panel Toolbar; F7 will display the active panel.
-
@pesala I'm sorry Pesala, but I don't understand. I have tried pressing those buttons on my keyboard, but nothing happens.
-
@jfh "In columnar form" should mean that you had the panel bar visible on the the left. The panel bar can be made visible by pressing the F4 button, or by clicking on the "panel" symbol in the status bar at the bottom left of your browser. Even if you have accidentally pressed the F11 button, pressing the F4 button at the top of your keyboard should still reveal panels.
The panel bar is a narrow vertical bar against the right or left side of your browser, that contains several line-drawn icons, one of is for bookmarks, and another of which is for downloads (and others for translation, notes, history, etc.)
Has the panel bar disappeared for you and you can't get it back?

@ayespy I have tried pressing the f4 button on two different keyboards, but nothing happens. I see no panel symbol on my start page. I have gone to the "panels" section of the main settings part, but do not understand what to select there. My Vivaldi Start Page now shows my Speed Dials and at the top of the screen above the Speed Dials is a horizontial listing of "Bookmarks" "History" "Notes" and "Calendar". The "Bookmarks" selection will display my bookmarks across the entire screen.
The Bookmarks panel which I formerly had on the left side of my Vivaldi start page was not a narrow bar, but was somewhat adjustable in size. -
@jfh The panel bar is a narrow bar. The panels that come from it, such as Bookmarks and Downloads, are not narrow - but are adjustable. In your settings is a category called "Panel" In that category, there should probably be a radio button activated for "Panel Position" "Left Side."
In your view menu (top left button of the browser, or your horizontal menu if you have it set for that) are a bunch of settings. About the fifth one down is called "Show Panel." Is that checked?

@jfh ALSO - a lot of Windows towers are shipping these days with insanely "compact" keyboards that do not have a row of "F" buttons across the top, F1 through F12. In such a case, the "F" buttons are hidden in a top row of (usually) media-control and similar buttons. But on each of those non-standard buttons, in tiny, tiny characters, you can see the labels "F1" through F12." In order to use the "F" function of these buttons, you have to press the "fn" key at the bottom of the keyboard usually between the "Ctrl" key and the "Window" key, at the same time as pressing a key with one of those microscopic "F" (+ a number) notations on it.
-
@ayespy I have tried the "fn" with the number buttons on both keyboards and still nothing. I have accessed the Vivaldi Start Page settings and selected the "Panel" item and have selected a number of the settings there, but still no bookmarks panel. I am about ready to give up and use a week old restore point to see if that will work.

NOT with the number buttons. With the non-standard keys that have nearly invisible "f" notations on them.
You are not going to where the settings are. The "View" menu has the option to show the panel. The little panel box on the Status Bar at the bottom of your browser has the setting. You will not find any settings concerning this on the Start Page.
