Solved New tab extension blocks history, bookmarks, notes and calendar pages
-
After upgrading to 5.0.2497.24 (Stable channel) (64-bit) I can no longer access the url vivaldi://bookmarks/ directly in a tab. The only places I can access my bookmarks is from the side panel menu or the bookmark bar. The same thing seems to be happening for vivaldi://history/ URL also.
Was access to these URLS removed for some reason?

@zeroic OK workaround until bug is fixed:
- Use URL
chrome-extension://nnnkddnnlpamobajfibfdgfnbcnkgngh/newtab/index.html
(keep in mind that the URL will be different for other extensions) - In Settings > General, set Homepage = Specific Page (URL)
- In Settings > General, set Startup with = Homepage (or what you want)
- In Settings > Tabs, set New Tab Page = Homepage (or what you want)
You can play around with settings, depending on how you want it, for instance you can use another site as Homepage, and instead set New Tab Page to Specific Page (URL). Vivaldi is very flexible here.
//MODEDIT: marked as "solution" for better visibility
- Use URL
-
Same here. Exact same issue - both the URLs don't work after the update
(1) vivaldi://bookmarks/
(2) vivaldi://history/ -
@nsantos78 and @jaytsecan how are you trying to accessing those pages? I can type both URLs into the address bar and get to the correct page.
Can you get to the bookmarks and history pages from the start page navigation bar that is above the speed dials?
-
@jaytsecan Those URLs work fine here with 5.0.2497.24 (Stable channel) (64-bit), both in a new and in an existing tab.
-
@nomadic I don't use the default Vivaldi start page. I have an extension for that.
But, I disabled the extension and used the "start page" links for history & bookmarks - and they worked.
BUT, the following does NOT work:
(1) Main Menu "Tools" -> clicking on either Bookmarks or History shows up a blank page
(2) typing the URLs directly into the address bar on a new tab also does not work and shows a blank page too. Both the above used to work with the 4.x browser version, but not any longer on the 5.x
Maybe something to do with existing "new page/tab extensions" not working with Vivaldi 5.x ?
(You can test it out with the following extension for example: "Speed Dial 2 New Tab"

@jaytsecan Ok, I can verify that having a new tab page extension installed and using the setting:
Tabs
→New Tab Page
→Start Page
→Controlled by Extension
does result in the inability to reach history and bookmark pages. Please make a bug report here: https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/ and post the
VB-
number you get from the email here so others can track the progress of the bug.
As for a temporary workaround for the specific extension you mentioned above, "Speed Dial 2 New Tab", you can try this setting instead:
Where the specific page is:
chrome-extension://jpfpebmajhhopeonhlcgidhclcccjcik/newtab.html
Then bookmark and history pages should work.
See this thread for adapting this workaround to other new tab extensions: How to make your Startpage / Newtab Extension work (again)
-
@nomadic Thank You! That worked. I will create a bug report as you suggested.
-
@nomadic I've discovered through some troubleshooting that if I disable this extension -- https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/new-tab-custom-colour-bla/alpbidclbcicajijnlgcchmkkbbknokl -- then everything works fine, for some reason after the upgrade this extension interferes with going to those URLS directly.
-
@nsantos78 Yeah, that extension would do it as well because it replaces the new tab page.
Have you considered using the default start page that comes with Vivaldi? You can hide everything to be left with only a blank screen, and you can set it to any color (or image) you want.
Might be worth looking into.

History (ctrl+h) is show nothing, but ctrl+shift+h work to show logs on floating panel.

@winglough Well, that’s not good, there’s clearly something wrong with your install. Can you open the startpage (
vivaldi://startpage
) and access the history tab from there? -
@luetage yap. vivaldi://startpage can access the history tab, it's worked. i closed the new tab extention (infinity new tab),and then default home page history tab show logs.
But i used the infinity new tab on old vivaldi version 4.xxx.xxxx, has never happened.
i updated vivaldi to latest version yesterday.
a little confused. -
@winglough Can confirm, you found a bug. Please report at https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/
-
@winglough Yep, some other users noticed this when a new tab extension is used. Not sure if anyone else actually filed a bug report, so please still do that with the link @luetage provided.
See this thread for a temporary workaround to get it working while you wait for a fix.
The URL you would use for Infinity New Tab is:
chrome-extension://dbfmnekepjoapopniengjbcpnbljalfg/newtab/index.html
-
@nomadic Yeah, that’s the workaround we used in ancient times
This simply needs a fix. -
@luetage Yeah, did a search on the forum for similar solutions when I was writing up the workaround and saw that thread I linked from the long distant year of 2017
Regressions sure are like a game of whack-a-mole.
-
@nomadic Thanks for attention.
I'm sure i am useing right extension infinity new tab for years.
After report the bug i reinstalled the extension , nothing change.
It can only wait for a fix looks like -
