Is there an explanation as to why Youtube consumes so much power?

Running Vivaldi
4.1.2369.11 (Stable channel) (x86_64)
because I decided to rollback to El Capitan on my old 2016 Macbook 12".Safari is out of the question because non-supported. Firefox looks and works fantastic, but Social Networks messaging services do not scroll... So what was my only choice? Good ole' Vivaldi.
Don't take me wrong. I love it. I have installed on every desktop I have, even at work. However, battery-wise, it's a bit of a killer –even in the most modest configuration–
Now, I run this old version because El Cap, however, I noticed it was DELICIOUS. Power consumption was ace, however, as soon as I ran a youtube video
Power consumption skyrocketed!
My question is: Why? What's about Youtube that drains the juice so much, but that Safari can handle so well?
Maybe lack of development in this platform? Apple's crappy compatibility?
Please do share your thoughts, and battery saving tricks on Vivaldi as well!
PS: I hope that
4.1.2369.11 (Stable channel) (x86_64)
is the latest version I can use on OSX el Cap 10.11.6 (15G31) If anyone know of a newer version, please do let me know! Thanks guys!
Edit: Lol as soon as I tried to submit this thread, Vivaldi froze!
Look at this woah mamma!

@dannii , YT in general uses more RAM and CPU than it should, I imagine because of the large amount of ads and other garbage it contains, not because of the videos in general. For this reason I mainly use front-ends, such as Piped, which works much faster, without ads or trackers and in passing with better video quality and lower CPU.
-
@catweazle thank you! Is there a way to strip down the garbage from the site directly? I would like to keep using their website due to likes, faves, etc.
I agree with you though, I always use quality in 480 or less (HD makes my head hurt) so it must be something else.
It's odd that I don't get the same with Safari though!
-
@dannii , I don't know, only that Google and it's APIs often "boycots" a Vivaldi in his sites. Because of this, Vivaldi deleted in the past it's name from the UA.
Google hate Vivaldi, I think. -
@catweazle Holy crap! I guess because of the privacy concerns.
Is there any documentation / further reading about this Google boycotting of Vivaldi? Would like to read more about it. Thanks!

@dannii , time ago there was a Blogpost , I think in Vivaldi v2and something, where the team decided to eliminate Vivaldi from the UA string, because of the "Browser not compatible" messages of Google sites and webs which used googleAPIs. After this, the problem was resolved, but now I think that Google uses other browser sniffing systems to identify Vivaldi.
It's a inconfortable competition from a Browser which avoid as much as possible the control from Google.
Dirty browser war. -
If this is still an issue, you can try using an alternative Youtube front end, such as https://invidious.io. The videos may take longer to load, but it is possible that less power will be consumed as Invidious is more lightweight.
-
I tend to use the duckduckgo built in video player for the majority of videos although the latest videos from chosen subscriptions need to be viewed in youtube itself.
Less resource usage in DDG.
Of course there is always freetube or other standalone media players but i find them cumbersome.
-
@priest72 , the most front-end of YT, like DDG or Invidious and forks, are using the same googlevideoAPI like YT. Because of this, videos blocked in YT are also blocked in this front-ends. This is the reason because I use Piped, which don't use the googlevideo API and permits watch the vids, also if they are blocked in YT itself.
Apart of this, despite the forks and instances of Invidious still work, Invidious itself is discontinued since 2020 and with this also the forks outdated.

@dannii As far as I can tell, El Capitan is still supported & you can run the latest stable version on it.
-
@hlehyaric & @dannii It certainly is! And thank goodness it is, because my hardware really dislikes the Sierras...
(I do, too. Love the mountains, dislike the iOS integration and its resources hogging.)
I still use the Reverso dictionaries via search and they notified me of their new-ish translation app. When I asked about an El Capitan version they recommended -basically- that I buy a new computer! Because, as they said, "it is a deprecated operating system which was dropped by Apple on 01 Dec 2018."
Fixing what ain't broke ain't my style.(I still have my original Bondie iMac running System 8...)
