Solved Uploading to icedrive
-
Hello, I have a basic account on the file storage site Icedrive. I have been using Vivaldi browser since joining Icedrive, and when uploading a folder, I have seen a dialogue inviting me to identify the folder, then a dialogue detailing progress file to file, and the data used tells me that only those files with changes are updated.
Yesterday and today, the invitation dialogue is as shown below .What I am seeing is a 'open file' dialogue, and no name appears in the 'name' line at he foot of the dialogue. If I simply identify the folder, the body displays all the files, but clicking the upload button changes its colour, but no upload is made.
I have gone to Firefox, and there,on clicking upload folder, a dialogue headed 'select folder to upload' appears, with listed files being some black, some grey, which I assume to be showing those with changes (or maybe not) and clicking upload does begin a process, but the shown size of upload suggests it is undertaking a complete upload of all files, which obviously is not what I want.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening?Modedit: Changed image

Hello and thanks to Pathduck, DoctorG and mib, it really is kind of you to do so much to try to help.
This problem is very odd. Like you, I have been able to upload new folders, and everything on Icedrive seems to work as expected. The problem seems therefore to be limited to an incremental upload, when the expected behaviour (based on experience since joining Icedrive in December 2020) is that when wanting to bring an archive file up to date, you click 'upload folder', select the file, then the 'upload' button, and the site show a dialog with progress, and identifies (if you are a quick reader) those files which it finds have been altered.
At present, those steps after clicking the upload button on the chosen file produce no response at all.
I am wondering therefore if the problem is that for some reason the existing file on Icedrive has become corrupted, so I may be forced to trash the current file, change the name of the file on my computer, and see if I can upload it as a new folder.
BTW, I now have a response from support at Icedrive who not unexpectedly say it is a problem with the browser, and so I should try the Vivaldi Forum!
Again, many thanks, KeithM
Addendum. I find that I can only upload certain folders, but individual files with no problem, so I have deleted the folder on Icedrive which was the heart of the problem, have asked to upload the parent folder on my computer, and it is currently in the process of uploading that. Maybe the problem will now go away! -
Slight problem there, the included screenshot was (obviously) incorrect!

Not a reply, but a renewed plea for help.
As, understandably, there is no route to support from Vivaldi direct, users might hope that there would be some surveillance of topics by the developers, so that when the community does not respond, help might come from the company.
Or has Vivaldi grown so big that it is starting to show the worst characteristics of the tech giants?

Hi, the main problem is to find someone with an icedrive account to test this.
This is a user forum, moderators are also user.
On your screen shot it looks you have the Vivaldi add blocker active, no idea if this influence file upload but you can try to disable it for this page with click on the shield icon.Cheers, mib

NB I typed this yesterday, but obviously forgot to click the submit button!
Many thanks mib, its good to know there are others out there!
I have always used the adblocker, and until last week had had no problems uploading to Ice drive. However, belt and braces, I disabled ads and trackers blocking, went to Icedrive, with the same result.
I have raised the issue with Icedrive suppoert, and have an initial response, waiting for a substantive answer, but as it works more or less when using Firefox, I think that may point to a problem with the browser rather than the target site. -
@keithmason
OK, I create a free account and can login from Vivaldi 5.1.2567.49.
It is a clean install, no extensions, default settings, I use the stable build only for testing.May you can check with a guest profile, it exclude all settings and extensions.
Sometimes after an update of Vivaldi extensions doesnt work as they work before.Cheers, mib

Mib, it is good of you to take the trouble to help. I think you may be misunderstanding my problem.
I am not having difficulty logging in to Icedrive, the problem comes when I try to upload files for safe keeping.
I am using the same stable version which you quote, but I thought I would try working with a guest profile as you suggest. I logged in to icedrive, tried to upload, and got the same result as described in the first post of this string.
So, it looks as though I may have to consider giving up Vivaldi, which would be a pity, as it has been my browser of choice since 2019.
And by the way, that reminds me that in 2019, support @vivaldi.com (without the space) used to give excellent help. I tried sending a plea for help to this address, and although it did not bounce back, it did not get a response either.
Regards, KeithM -
@keithmason Are you sure you're not misunderstanding how to use the dialog?
Storage sites often have an option to upload a complete directory, and when using this, no files will show (only directories) in the file picker. But the naming of the dialog can often be confusing, depending on OS. In your screenshot it looks like you've selected the "Brexit" directory, but the filter file is empty, meaning it only shows directories.
If you clicked Upload I would then assume it would upload the full Brexit directory.
If you select the bottom option "Upload Folder" you will get a dialog very similar to your screenshot, i.e. not showing files, just directories. But of course I'm on Windows, so it differs a bit.

Pathduck, thanks. Of course I may be failing to understand how to use the dialog, but that would assume that for the 20 times I have uploaded successfully since switching to linux, I have also misunderstood, but the system felt sorry for me, and did what I wanted anyway!
On Icedrive, the options are folder or file, directories are not mentioned. It may have been unfortunate that the screenshot I used had an empty folder showing, here is another screenshot showing the path and folder with its many files listed.
But clicking the upload button still does nothing at all.
I suspect that the dialogue needs to be a different one, probably headed 'select file /folder to upload'.
I have this morning had a message from Icedrive saying the problem has been escalated to their technical department, so it may be that they will be able to suggest an answer.
Many thanks, KeithM -
@keithmason I've signed up for a disposable account there, and no problems uploading files and folders (directories), using either "Upload Files" or "Uploads Folders".
Directories/Folders are the same thing, I just can't seem to be consistent in which one to use.
Using "directories" is more correct, technically speaking, but most people only know about "folders" which is a friendlier term I guess, and also easier to write... when writing to technical people I would of course just use "dirs" which is even shorter and should be understood by anyone with a passing understanding of file systems.

I checked with Vivaldi 5.1.2567.49 on my KDE Debian 10. I set Dolphin and Vivaldi siede-by-side, ccould drag a folder from Dolphin into Vivaldi's Icedrive window, and folder was completely uploaded. And "Add new+" → "Upload folder" worked, too.

@keithmason
Ah OK, during my test I upload a file to icedrive, create a folder and move this file in to. Was all working on Linux/KDE.
System specs in my signature.Cheers, mib

@keithmason If issue reappears again, please report bug to Vivaldi tracker
