Importing mails from Vivaldi to Vivaldi (Windows --> Linux)
-
Hi there,
I just started to use Vivaldi Mail couple of weeks ago and imported all my Opera mails. That was a lot of work as all labels and other stuff was lost so I had to go through all mails again. Now I'm switching from Windows to Linux (Fedora) and for importing a bunch of stuff I've installed both currently so I can access my Windows files from Linux.
Vivaldi doesn't seem to provide an import function for mails from itself. I tried to copy the whole user data folder from Windows to Linux - that works extremely well, only passwords and extensions seem to be gone, even the opened tabs are transfered. But the mails aren't available on the Linux systems. My email account is shown in settings (had to add the password again) but no mail is shown in the mail area - there is only a message that I can start to add an email account. A message on the botton also says that Vivaldi tries to open MailDB which could take longer after Upgrades but that never ends.
The solution for that is to delete “Default/Storage/ext/mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/def/IndexedDB” and to re-enter the mail account. When I do that all on the server existing mails will be redownloaded but the old ones won't show up even if they are still in the same folder on the hard drive.
How can I import the mails from Vivaldi (Windows) to Vivaldi (Linux)?tl;dr:
What options are there to import Mails from one Vivaldi instance to another (in my case from Windows to Linux)? -
So, I've copied the mails again from Vivaldi folder to the old Opera folder structure and then I can import them again using the Opera import feature. That sucks as labels and folders are gone again. Result is 2k unread mails, only sorted by date.

@rungrung the easiest way is to go via an imap server that both your windows and your linux account use. For example, I have added my @vivaldi.net mail address to my Windows and Linux Vivaldi and just tested - a new label I added and applied to an email on Vivaldi Windows, the email now also carries this label on Linux and label is shown in the appropriate section of the mail panel
So if your mail server gives you imap, instead of copying mails through a drive, just sync through the server...
Back in the good old M2 Opera12 days I used to have a separate FAT32 formatted drive that both Windows and Linux could access, and where I kept my Opera user profile and all emails. Any shenanigans I would do on either OS would be exactly the same on the other because they were accessing the identical data. But I don't know a way to do this with Vivaldi.

@rungrung ok today I ran into the same thing and I realize that the workaround via IMAP works nicely for one mail account, but not for the 3 from more than 10 years ago.
@gmg I have tried to fiddle with copying the mail folder over, the MailDB file and MailDB-journal. What about that extension folder with the unspeakable name?
For a while I was thinking of "just" creating a bunch of symlinks from Linux to the corresponding Windows Vivaldi mail files and folders, but since I don't know all of which I need and which problems might be caused, I gave up. So I agree with @Rungrung: please add a Vivaldi -> Vivaldi mail import for us dual booters.
