Solved [Solved] Unusual high cpu usage with nothing open since updating to 5
-
EDIT: SOLUTION: Disable animation in settings. It's a bug with the audio icon in the tab (when you play audio and it keeps being animated)
Just wanted to ask around in case I'm doing something wrong before making a bug report
Vivaldi would randomly start using 10-20% of my cpu while doing absolutely nothing and having no tabs open after using it for a while (usually like 30 minutes, maybe less)
I added/changed no new addons added after 5.0 was updated nor any new features changed. I even disabled sync and it still does it.
On Vivaldi's task manager it just shows App: Vivaldi and Background Page: Vivaldi as the cpu user
the cpu usage will continue whether I have tabs open or not, only solution is to totally close and open the browser again.
is anyone else experiencing this?

@vaygr Huh apparently there's a bug with the audio icon in the tab area (when a tab plays audio) disabling animation in the settings seems to solve my issue (I think, still testing but it seems fixed-ish so far)
I found the answer on reddit of all places from a Vivaldi dev, a fix is on the way according to them.

@wadhah Unusual, what does Vivaldi's own Task Manager (Shift-Esc) show?
-
@wadhah
Hi, it is possible extensions are not work anymore or create issues after an major update. Please check to run a guest profile for while.https://help.vivaldi.com/article/guest-view/

@tbgbe The photo in the post is from vivaldi's own task manager. App: Vivaldi and Background Page: Vivaldi are what is using the cpu while literally nothing is happening.

@mib2berlin Will try that thank you, any idea on how to downgrade to 4.3 or something without losing my profile? I want to try that on top of the guest profile
-
@wadhah
Make sure you backup your profile folder, downgrade mostly corrupt a profile and even it looks all good you get strange issues and nobody can reproduce.
Maybe you install 4.3 as standalone install, it is independent to you existing install, delete or rename the 4.3 profile folder and copy your 5.0 folder over. You can remove 5.0 without deleting user data and install 4.3, it will use the existing profile. In all cases make a backup.The path to the profile is published in File > Help > About

@wadhah I have exact same problem but on Linux, for which I opened a thread at Poor performance since 5.0 with unfortunately no feedback on how to debug/resolve it.
-
@vaygr Yeah it does not seem like it's just us either, I am having the same problem on my laptop but to a lesser extent (around 5%-8% idle cpu usage, although my laptop cpu is somewhat worse than my desktop, weird)
I took a quick look around for a way to enable logs in chrome and found this which I'll be trying and sifting through the logs in the hopes I can find some clue

Thanks @wadhah, I'll test it in the next couple of days and respond in my own thread. I also wonder where in the release notes it's going to be mentioned, but so far according to that reddit post the 5.0 version I started with was affected and .35 was still affected on Jan 7. Would be nice to know if .38 fixed it.
The next thing I was going to look at would be Spell check high CPU usage.
