open a new tab button and 'speed dial'

hello all is there a secret hidden setting that lets me choose the page that opens when clicking the + button to open a new tab?
pre version 5 it was difficult to get it to work, but i did it and was happy with Vivaldi for quite some time. now... no matter what i do, it opens a new 'speed dial.' blech... i have no use for a speed dial lol. those that use it, more power to ya. but really... this is infuriating. i want a specific page to load, not a frickin useless speed dial.
i tried everything in the settings page a million different ways and still it goes to speed dial... opening a bookmark or clicking a link sometimes you can see how it tries to load a speed dial before it loads whatever you clicked. oooooo it wants a new speed dial bad lol... this is just silly.
i love Vivaldi... it's customization is awesome and it's on linux too. tab stacking and saved sessions are the bomb. THUMBS UP!
but, if i can't remedy this, Vivaldi will no longer be my daily driver and i will use it just for a game site where i must have several different tabs open to config game settings. and that will be a shame 
for a browser that wants to have the ultimate in customization and usage options this is an outright fail. someone please please tell me i'm wrong here

vivaldi://settings/tabs/and change theNew Tab Pagesetting to a specific page by selecting the last entry and inputting the site you wish to show up as the new tab page.
