Vivaldi unable to be set as default browser in Win7
-
Exactly as the title says. Trying to change my default browser through the settings doesn't do anything, and the OS doesn't list Vivaldi in the default programs list at all so I can't try to set it that way.
Updating the OS isn't an option due to cost of replacing/learning programs and equipment needed for my job.

If "Check on Startup" on Settings not works and not ask if you want make it as default browser try to do it through Control Panel.
Control panel; Programs; Default programs; Set default programs

This does not function. I searched to try before posting the thread and Vivaldi is not there, as far as the Control Panel is concerned it may as well not exist. It is also already has "check on start-up" checked, but I will attempt it again.

I have tried the "check on start-up" prompt and it did not change my default browser from FireFox.

Seems Windows is malfunctioning.
It's assumed that "Set Default Programs" is there, even -as me- using a standard account instead of one with admin rights.
I suggest you a fresh Windows re-installing, It's not a normal Windows behaviour.
-
Set Default Programs is there, Vivaldi isn't listed as a program, please read what I have typed multiple times in this thread because at no point did I point to a basic Windows function not existing.

@rudje
Hi, only guessing, is it possible it is not listed if you install Vivaldi as user only version?
There are three ways to install Vivaldi:- User only
- All users
- Standalone

Where would you even find how it was installed after the fact? I first installed it literally years ago, it's just that at the time it didn't do what I wanted.

@rudje
Open the Help menu > About, there is the path of the profile.
If it is in user data it is user only, if it is in C:\Program it is all user.
A standalone install can be anywhere, you choose it during installation.Cheers, mib

@rudje It's probably a good idea for you to do an uninstall/reinstall - it won't change your profile settings (unless chosen on uninstall).
If you originally installed as Standalone for instance, it does not (AFAIK) register itself as an application that can handle HTTP/HTML.
If you go to Help > About you can find Executable Path.
In that directory you should find a file called either:
sys.viv - for all users install
stp.viv - for standalone install
something.viv - for single user install (can't remember, don't use) -
It took multiple reinstalls to find the right options but it did eventually get fixed. The install info really needs to be altered because it is completely unintuitive for the program to behave this way--either the option to set Vivaldi as Default Browser shouldn't be there in the first place when on the Install As User option or there should be a warning somewhere that the option doesn't function correctly on Win7.
