Window maximization error - Linux Mint 20
-
As I already wrote in January 21 in the German forum here,
after opening Vivaldi with maximized window, after a while there is a small gap of about 2px on the right edge and the desktop background is visible.I have to doubleclick right of the tabs to get a non-max window (that is then still of the max-size like pseudo-max).
With dragging the borders to resize the window I get it smaller. Then I have to click on Max-button to get a real maximized window.
This isn't stable and after a while and some work the same issue appears again.
This happens in Linux Mint 20.2.
Can anybody confirm this as a bug?
-
I've had maximization issues with Vivaldi in Linux Mint (Cinnamon), essentially since the start of Vivaldi.
Although, my issues don't show up 'after a while'. It's either at startup or when I open a new window, or when I move a window around.
The workaround, is similar to what you said to do. Usually by minimizing and maximizing again, Vivaldi will go to the proper maximized state. Then it's usually fine until I restart the browser (or move or open a new window).
I don't think this is something specific to my software configuration because I was able to confirm the issue when using a live disk and installing nothing else but Vivaldi.
I filed a bug report on this issue almost a year ago: VB-70960

@ugly We could not reproduce teh issue on Mint 20.2.
I tested today and Vivaldi always started maximized, no small pixel border on top as Dancer told.
-
@ugly Yes, to be more precise, it doesn't happen
after a while
really, but in situations I haven't looked at each time.
In 1 case it happened when I started telegram desktop app. Maybe the other cases are related somehow to opening another program on desktop or restarting Vivaldi.
I very often toggle between stable and snapshot to compare them.
In that case it might happen as well.I have to check if it happens on my laptop. Same OS, other hardware (graphic drivers).
It would be interesting to learn if it happens on other Linux PC.

If I have time I'll try to test again on a live disk for 20.2. The bug report was from last year, so it was not on 20.2.
I do see this issue on at least 2 computers and I think a third one as well (all three have totally different hardware) that run Linux Mint Cinnamon.
One factor that might be important is that I have the setting for 'Remove Tab Spacing in Maximized Windows' checked.
-
@ugly I have the issue on my laptop too. Both machines have Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon.
The bug was there before in Mint 20.1 as well.
And the optionRemove Tab Spacing in Maximized Windows
is checked in both machines here.To reproduce it, we should test it on an ubuntu live disk rather than only on Mint. Maybe I can check that.
However, because there is this option
Remove Tab Spacing in Maximized Windows
it most probably is a Vivaldi bug on Linux machines. -
I had this issue randomly when I was running GNOME/Cinnamon on Ubuntu, it was sporadic and didn't follow a consistent pattern. I haven't seen the problem at all since switching to KDE, so I suspect it's probably a GNOME-specific issue (including GNOME spinoffs like Cinnamon). I don't know if it happens on other DEs other than GNOME/Cinnamon.
-
@dancer18 I did a test on a live disk for Linux Mint 19.3 last night. I was able to reproduce the issue (although immediately, I had to close and open Vivaldi a few times).
I actually think that the issue is more that Vivaldi is always opening windowed, regardless of whether Vivaldi was maximized when closed. If I shrink the window size for Vivaldi and close it, when I start Vivaldi again, it opens with the shrunken window size.
But if I close Vivaldi when the browser is maximized, when I restart Vivaldi, it will open as a non-maximized window that happens to be the full size of the screen, which results in the gap.
I remember testing it using Manjaro KDE and was not able to reproduce the issue.
I don't know if this matters, but I do run a dual-monitor setup. However, after I was able to reproduce the issue on the live disk, I disabled the 2nd display in the Cinnamon settings, and the issue still happened.
-
@ugly Thank you for testing. And yes, sometimes the the buggy window comes with restart.
But not always. Sometimes in between while opening or closing other programs or else.BTW: Also Firefox had already a similar issue with Linux (Mint or Ubuntu at least).
-
MX Linux here. I can consistently reproduce it by clicking the maximize / window button. I am using Vivaldi's top bar and window buttons, not the native ones. Am on XFCE. The maximize / window button does not seem to work correctly.

I downloaded Pop OS and Ubuntu (both based on 21.04) and tested on a live disk.
The issue doesn't seem to occur on Pop OS or Ubuntu (or happens very rarely). If I close Vivaldi maximized, it will restart maximized. Sometimes when I closed it windowed, it would restart as maximized.
One way to quickly reproduce this issue is just to open new windows. Using Ctrl+n, it happens a lot.
Open Vivaldi, properly maximize the window so there is no gap at the top. then hit Ctrl+n a bunch of time and see if the newly opened windows have the issue.
On Ubuntu or Pop OS, if I properly maximize Vivaldi, and then hit ctrl+n about 15 times, it might happen once or twice where the new window will open as a fullscreen window with the gap. The rest of the time it will open properly maximized.
On my own installed version of Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2, if I open Vivaldi and properly maximize the window, then hit ctrl+n about 15 times, usually the first 2 or 3 windows will open properly maximized. Then the next 11 or 12 new windows will open as the fullscreen window with the gap.

I have this issue since forever. I am on Solus Budgie.

I decided to uncheck the box
Remove Tab Spacing in Maximized Windows
.
Now there is always spacing above tabs, and it's fine to me because there are no problems when resizing the window.
(It bothered me that I couldn't resize it without doubleclick on tab bar) -

The spacing above the tabs decrease the usability/productivity of the tabs selection/closing/dragging. -
@stardust Not too often, but already sometimes, for easier drag and drop between programs and browsers.
I haven't noticed any problems with the tab functions yet.
Can you describe it in more detail? -
@Stardust I rejoiced too soon.
The same bug also appears if I uncheck the boxRemove Tab Spacing in Maximized Windows
.
After a while I also see only the pseudo-max window, whose size cannot be changed and which has a non-clickable button. -

As for the dragging, there is still an empty area in the tab bar or you can use win+left/right or press win + drag (Linux feature)

I may be seeing another aspect of this problem. See Demaximize Doesn't Always Work. XFCE4 on Debian 10 and 11., https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/65203/demaximize-doesn-t-always-work-xfce4-on-debian-10-and-11. for what I have done to isolate and reproduce it.
In addition, I often shut down the browser demaximized. Often, when I restart it comes up maximized. If I have two or more windows open when I shut the browser down, the main window often comes up maximized, but other windows do not. This is with both the Vivaldi decorations and the native XFCE decorations.
-
@ccurley In addition, when a window comes up maximized, it "forgets" the demaximized size, so demaximizing results in a window that occupies the entire screen.

Ctrl+n 15 times
Let's see.
2/15 new Vivaldi windows are not maximized
Vivaldi 4.1.2369.10 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit)
Solus Budgie.2/15 new Vivaldi windows are not maximized
Vivaldi 4.1.2369.16 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit)
Solus Budgie.(PS: I had more than 2 windows on a 1st try, this was a 2nd test)
So this bug is easily reproducible.
