CPU usage after update
-
Hi,
every time I upgrade the Vivaldi browser, CPU usage increases to a higher value. In the list of processes I see vivaldi-bin with much higher consumption than before the upgrade. I have to end the whole vivaldi-bin process and the load will drop even after starting a new browser window. I have more computers, it shows up everywhere I have Kubuntu 20.04 LTS. -
Hello,
I have the same problem on Mint 20.2. I've not checked if it's related to the update, but I have exactly the same problem. Vivaldi-bin uses up to 25% of CPU also when the browser is closed. I have a fanless PC so this is a big issue on this kind of PCs. -
@trendel
Hi, open chrome://settings and search for "background".
Disable apps running in the background.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Thank you very much! I've tried to disable this feature
-
@mib2berlin Hi, thank you for your reply. I use Vivaldi on background for Whatsapp messages.

chrome://settings
In that settings it is said
when vivaldi is closed
. What could be a solution when it is open and high cpu usage happens while watching a YT video?A script could be useful for that scenario. When watching YT all background activity should be deactivated, be it social media or else.
Who can provide such a script (JS)?

Yes, this happens to me all the time too. I've already posted a bug report about it. When I first discovered it, my CPU fan was running all night and I didn't know why!

@sirfredrick
Hi, in your signature you mention different distributions, is the CPU issue with all of them? I don´t have/had it on Opensuse since I use Vivaldi.Cheers, mib

@dancer18
In Vivaldi, you could open tools> task manager and do it from there?
No script needed, I'd think.
This will also tell you which tabs and/or processes within Vivaldi are using memory and CPU. -
Me too. My fan start being noisy after any update when Vivaldi is running.
Although it's trivial to open task manager to killvivaldi-bin
, I think it can make some users panic and leave a bad reputation about the browser.Hell I even thought my computer was infected by a crypto miner back then.

@fixitmanaz Good idea, at least to check what is consuming CPU. I found out while streaming a video, that there are no other processes active beside that belonging to perform the streaming:
At the moment the fan is low. So I have to wait until it is speeding up.
And terminating the processes belonging to the stream isn't fixing it, I suppose.

I have nothing running in the background (on opensuse tumbleweed) 5.1.2553.3 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit). Thanks for the tip with the task manager. The ambient 10% of cpu usage on my octacore dell comes from the GPU process. Despite the fact that vivaldi is only displaying the quick dial page, which is totally static.
IMHO, there is something not really efficient going on. But this can be due to the fact that everything from A-Z is ECMAscript, which is known to be terribly efficient -
@rigo
Hi, I ask because the default setting of background app is "On" but not many extensions are using this.
I am not sure about the GPU process but CPU shows 100% is one thread full load. Your octacore may have 16 threads, so even 50% is really nothing.
My GPU process show 1-4%, sometimes raise up to 20% for a second or so.
I have no idea what drives your GPU process to 10% permanently.Cheers, mib
-
Sorry, I wasn't precise. The GPU process is the same as you describe while the overall addition of all processes suming up to the 10% that, at some point, makes the ventilation spin. Which is annoying if the browser doesn't do anything. I then looked at apps in the task manager and killed webex and zotero and it improved.
I agree, it doesn't consume like a blockchain. But it still is a lot of CO2 for doing nothing. I don't think it is a bug. But I don't think it is a feature either. Some attention to energy consumption would be welcome. -
@rigo
You are right, some browser does it better but Chrome does exactly the same on my systems. I cant check Edge at moment, I have the beta version installed on Linux with many settings changed and flags set.Cheers, mib

For Chrome I would even understand it as it is phoning home telling your most private movements. But vivaldi has cut that "functionality". I will go and compare FF.
