(History of) Vivaldi Feature Requests

I'd like to minimize tabs as in O12.
(What I really want: Read a page, and move on to the next with mouse gestures without closing it, and not getting back to it when I close the next tab for real, but rather go on reading all the pages I just opened.)
-
I would like to see a traffic counter. I am creating internet sites by myself. I am fussy about traffic and always trying to bring it to an absolute minimum. Often it is very inconvenient to get the traffic which was used for a domain in numbers, after clicking and trying for a while. So a overview about the used traffic, broken up (or down) to the domains (and subdomains), would be cool.
-
REQUEST: Tab Stack Series: I would like to be able to generate new tabs within a tab stack. I often don't use the tab stack because it's a secondary, manual step to stack tabs. I really like this feature but I still find myself with an unmanageable amount of tabs overhead. Being able to add a tab within a stack would clean up the experience quite a bit.

Not sure how many people think this….
I like the tab preview when off to the side. I'd kinda like the previews to be available at the top of the screen as well.

They are, actually. Simply drag the bottom of the tab bar downward to expose them.

Minor item, file names contain spaces, requires the use of quotes .
example: cd Session Storage has to be typed as cd 'Session Storage' . -
Built-in Perspectives functionality
http://perspectives-project.orgBad News:
It seems that the Perspectives extension cannot be made for Chrome, because the devs will not allow extensions to override the browser.
On the one hand I can see Googles point, but I use Perspectives, Calomel, and HTTPS Everywhere because they do exactly that.
I don't trust Mozilla to think of everything, and I don't trust Google to think of everything.
No offence, but I also don't expect the Vivaldi devs to think of everything.
I don't like only having a "plan-A" with no backup.I propose that the Perspectives code be made a part of the browser as an optional security feature, so that it can do its job.
Either that or the Vivaldi devs make provision for trusted extensions of a type that effect security, and provide a managed page for distribution.Ultimately, if Vivaldi cannot use such extensions as these, or include the functionality internally, I will never be able to trust it as much as Firefox.

Hi! After using Chrome for so long, here is my feature request:
I am used to using the Omnibox in Chrome. However, I think that the two bars (one for url and one for search) is actually better.
However, I want to be able to see the full content of both when I am not in a large window. To solve this, I think that the search bar should expand when you start typing in it, but should stay small when you're not.

I'm still using Opera 12 for work and private browsing, so finding Vivaldi was a motive o great joy for me.
What I use and miss most from Opera is:
.- Sessions
.- Customize UI: the possiblity of adding button to the toolbars.
.- Open links in new tabs in backgroundThank you in advance
-
Something I'm missing a lot from my older browser Citiro (Chrome browser as well) is they had a speaker icon on whichever tab sound was coming from so you'd know what tab to mute if you had to.
Of course also the chrome extension UI showing up in the top bar.

Vivaldi also has the sound indicator on tabs (in the last several snapshots). If you don't have it your version is really old. Full extension support is being worked on.

The advanced session handling (save and name sessions by hand etc.)
-
Mouse gestures
-
Let me customize the toolbar! (I always have and had "Find in page" field
between the adress field and the search engine field in Opera up to
version 12.x) -
The F12-menu (though some of its features like "Proxy on/off" can be done by extensions)
-
Menu: "New private tab" and "New private Window"
-
The following features from the "Advanced" settings:
-
"Open new tab next to active" (I want this "on", default is "off")
-
"Reuse current tab" (I want this "off", default is "on")
-
"When closing a tab…" (3 options)
-
"Show close button on each tab" (I want this "off", default is "on", good if a lot of tabs are open and they get narrow)
-
"Downloads" (User defined mime-types)
-
"Programs" (Helper applications for other protocols)
-
Empty history/cache/passwords etc. selectively
-
Individual proxy config inside the settings
-
"Storage" (Webpages using persistent storage)
While you're at it - why not go through Opera 12.x's "Advanced" settings and
look which settings can be ported to Vivaldi! -

Hello,
you do a great job. Thank you.I use the tabs at the left to save space for content (most websites are higher than wide)
I desire the navigationbar smaler, perhaps as shown in attached picture, when the tabs not at top.

I want a "Search in page" feature in the address field. Ideally I'd like to be able to add a separate search field on the interface for custom searches but just having the "search in page" functionality in the existing search field would be a good first step.

I have pretty many small feature requests which I'll just list here. Some of them have probably been requested before, but I hope if more people support them they'll get added to Vivaldi. It's details like these that really make a browser the best to use: most of my Firefox extensions are enabling small things, including some on this list, which Chrome extensions won't allow.
Already polled features:
[ul]
- History sidebar with Ctrl+H
- Image Properties context menu
- Smooth scrolling
- Throbber favicon for loading tabs
[/ul]
Tab features:
[ul]
- Edit min/max tab width
- Drag tabs between windows
- Show placeholder line cursor where tab will be moved to when dragging tab
- Optionally open new tab from link next to current tab
- When closing a tab, switch to the most recently used tab
[/ul]
Tab sidebar features:
[ul]
- Set default tab sidebar width, so double-clicking the edge resets to that
- Scroll tab sidebar when lots of tabs overflow
- Tree-style tab stacks in sidebar tabs (nested trees aren't necessary)
[/ul]
Keyboard features:
[ul]
- Key shortcut for rewind/fast-forward, like how Alt+Left/Right goes back/forward
- Ctrl+K and/or Ctrl+E to focus the search box
- Alt+Home to load the home page
- Show key shortcuts next to menu items
[/ul]
Context menu features:
[ul]
- Right-click forward/back buttons to see tab history menu
- Menu item to merge all windows' tabs into one window
- Highlight text and right-click; "Search" context menu item should have a submenu with each search engine
- Either all the View menu items should say "Toggle" or none should
[/ul]
Speed Dial features:
[ul]
- Disable Speed Dial, or have an about:blank new tab page (optionally dark)
- If you open a new tab to Speed Dial and go to a URL, Back should not go back to the Speed Dial page
[/ul]
Toolbar features:
[ul]
- Rearrange and hide toolbar icons, including the tab toolbar's Trash icon
- If panel sidebar is on right, move its toggle switch to the rightmost on the status bar
- RSS button next to bookmark button in location bar
- Show current tab title in window title bar, next to menu items
- Optional favicon in location bar
[/ul]
Other features:
[ul]
- Allow separators in bookmarks, like Firefox
- Support H.264 HTML5 video
[/ul]

I had an idea, I'm sure others have had it before me but I'm not about to look through all these pages.
What about the ability to set up specific websites to use specific spell-checking languages? For example I am Swedish and use sites and forums where I write in English and others where I write in Swedish, it would be nice to set up the Swedish sites to always default to Swedish language for spell-checking and set up the English sites to always default to English spell-checking.
-
I would like to agree with this, applying language settings per page or site is a good idea. By extension, the choice of input method could also be linked to the site/page.
-
I would like to request some features which relate to the email part of the application.
[ol]
- As I have mentioned before, it would be nice to have an alternative to Outlook to connect to Exchange.
- There should be an option to disable email accounts.
- The action of deleting an account should offer the option to manage the process to allow valuable data to be backed up.
- When you have an attachment in a email either received or sent, this attachment should be able to be used to spawn a new separate email with that attachment.
- Attachments which are already associated with an email should be able to be attached in turn to an email that is currently being written.
- This should go without saying but 'edit as new'.
[/ol]
On an entirely different note, a built-in web-server as functional as possible only accessible to local-host and the browser itself. Such that as the file is edited then live and in real time the page being displayed is updated. No more saving a file and re-loading.
Just when you thought this couldn't get any more complicated and pie in the sky… An Sqlite engine to build a fake back end for a web-page. This could take a schema as an argument with structured data like a csv for fake records. Or based upon the queries being run build a schema based of the fields in the queries. This would work as an optional tool with some work to set up but with minimal overheads in terms of building and connecting to a real DB, Security wouldn't be an issue as there's no external access.
Please give feedback responsibly.

A lot of that strikes me as some pretty major programming, which would push its eventual introduction well into the future. IMHO mail should not be delayed for the purpose of giving it special properties right out of the box.
That said, I have seen two email clients (and only two) that allow one to detach, reassign, delete attachments. These were decades in development, and neither is currently widely popular. Not saying it can't be done, but am saying this is not something people expect from email as a rule - so if it takes a long time to write it, few or none will miss it, and if it gets finished and introduced, few or none will appreciate it.
Seems like the ability to hobnob with Exchange ought to be doable, given time.
Not clear what you mean "disable" email accounts. If you mean turn off the mail function, then if it's like olde Opera, it won't be there unless you turn it on. If you mean keep an email account from receiving or sending mail, that's a given. If you mean delete accounts, again, a given.

Two additional thoughts to add to the above.
Regex/Text search with in a page or domain or window or stack of tabs. Count the result set.
With the web-development feature, the ability to create a sand-boxed editable clone of a web-page. This would have to be considered in the context of security first though. I haven't thought all the pros and cons through but this could be useful in some contexts and dangerous in others.
