(History of) Vivaldi Feature Requests
-
When I download a file, I'd like to choose between the next options:
1.- Open: Open file in a temp folder and erase it when I close the file
2.- Save: Save the file in a predetermined location
4.- Save as: Choose a location for saving the file
5.- Cancel: Stop downloading processI really like Vivaldi except for this lack of feature
Thank you -
In approximate order of importance.
0. Address bar auto dropdown off.
1. The animated sound icon on tabs: stop animating it. Also applies to other annoying animations like the zoom on speed dial. Open/close panel. Finally we have adblock and now the browser starts jumping!
2. The fonts. Fix them. The web is all about text and the font rendering in Vivaldi (and all Chromium based browsers) is horrific. Linux comes with freetype, that with some configuration can render most fonts well, and MS hinted fonts perfectly. Stop using your own home-grown very much sub-par solution. Speaking of sub, BGR subpixel order isn't supported, but would be with freetype.
3. New tab button must stay in one place. Having it move around (moves with every tab you add) breaks spatial memory. I prefer it leftmost on the address bar toolbar.
^ The above are show-stoppers that prevent me from using Vivaldi as a primary browser.
4. Bookmarks! There is no bookmarks menu. I don't want a panel. Also applies to downloads, put them in a tab.
5. The way open/close panel animation affects the page is very annoying. The whole page jumps.
6. The idea of coloring tabs based on the page is poorly executed. First, my browser window is not a clown. Use a subdued shade of the color, not a fully saturated color. Second, only apply it to the tab, not the address bar toolbar. Third, it currently only colors the active tab. That completely defies any purpose. I know which page I'm on. This feature is only useful to quickly recognize the content of other tabs, to avoid having to read the tab text of every tab. Apply the color to inactive tabs.
7. Tab stacking: Can't drag tab out of stack. Also, the "bars" above the tab disappear when the the main menu is active.
8. Double clicking on the tab bar should create a new tab, not randomly alternate between doing nothing and unmaximizing the window.
9. Tab open position and which tab to focus after close options. Like "open new tab to the right of current".
10. Proper privacy settings:
- Stop asking me whether to save passwords.
- Delete browsing and download history when closing the browser (no, this isn't the same as private browsing mode)
- Don't save form data
(Look at how firefox does it)
Remove the home and reload buttons from the toolbar. Toolbar customization.
Use dots (…) instead of the fadeout effect when the title is too long for the tab. Much more readable.
13. MMB on back/forward buttons and their menus doesn't work (I expect open in new tab).
14. Middle click to pan.

Hi, I love the work the team has put into this browser and having improved a lot since I started to switch from firefox since TP1. (firefox was still used as TP1 had a lot of issues). Now that it is stable, I have began to use this as my main browser and I still miss 1 feature from firefox, tab groups. Even though mozilla reports that not many users are using it, I still love it as it helps saves more tabs in session without the need of bookmarking it to read it later.

In addition to that I would like to have the possibility to expand the stacked tabs (like you could do it in Opera 12) or enable tab popup thumbnails for stacked tabs only. -
Can I also write here about bugs and glitches or this is thread for new features only?

This is only for new features.
There is another thread for discussing bugs: https://vivaldi.net/forum/vivaldi-browser/1758-bug-wizard
Better still, one can actually report bugs at https://www.vivaldi.com/bugreport

Hello!
I would like to see 3 working features:- integrated mail client (like in old Opera);
- official portable version;
- option - incognito mode always ON.
Thanks! And by the way - great browser
-
1. speed dial delete button should not be there. I accidentally pressed it.
2. I use Last Tab Back extension, I think Vivaldi should integrate this feature.
thank you
-
When i open folder in speed dial it will be great if this folder can be close with "escape" key like opera.

For now, try Shift Tab, Enter

Remove the home and reload buttons from the toolbar. Toolbar customization.U mean removable not remove? Toolbar customization? Yeas, I'm totaly agreed!
13. MMB on back/forward buttons and their menus doesn't work (I expect open in new tab).
+1.
And besides:
1. When I for example open a new tab in background (by clicking the mouse scroll on link) the new tab in background appears next to the current/last tab. But when I hover cursor to this new backgrounded tab the box of thumbnail appears, but this box is empty. It has no thumbnail. Why? Becouse the tab is in background, and I can see only the thumbnails of the at leas once selected (clicked) tabs. And besides the thumbnail appears almost instantly after cursor stops at the tab. Why so instant? It should appears 1-2 seconds after cursor stops at the tab. And you should be able to change this 1-2 seconds delay of showing thumbnail by your own will. 1 second, 2 seconds, less than 1 second, more than 3 seconds etc. An option to change the delay of box with site thumbnail appears after the cursor stops on the tab should be added. In miliseconds.
Short version: The problem is that not every tab has thumbnail, backgrounded ones dont have it. Only active tabs.
2. When I change to fullscreen in youtube the windows mouse cursor does not dissapear. (Not only in YouTube, but in other online videos too, not in everyone, but in the most of them).
3. There is no support for themes and skins. I hope this will be changed in future. This and custom apps and add-ons shop special and dedicated for vivaldi, not the chrome one. For now Vvaldi is compatible with chrome plugins and extensions, but as you know is not the same.
That's all for now.
PS. Im alredy wrote some points from this post in other thread, so many from above is copy-paste.

Hi andyhavoc,
I'm kind of glad you made this thread, because I've been giving suggestions for Vivaldi to improve it's own UI too, though my suggestions are very, very different from yours.
I already like the current UI aesthetic and layout, especially when I have my tabs at the bottom. That works for me very well. There are a few things that I would change in Vivaldi to make the design even more modern and seamless than it is now. Though I haven't actually made the designs because I don't know how, but if you'd like to make some based off of what I'm going to write, then feel free to do so.
I'll also give my opinion on what I think of your design ideas. I don't like what you've done with the reload button. It's nicer right now with it's direction and it makes it more centered and consistent. I can understand why you've decided to make the rewind/fast forward buttons taller, to make it more in line with the other buttons. Not too sure how I feel about that, as it makes it seem bolder as well, but I'm sure it could be reworked to make it symmetrical with the other buttons. But one of my suggestions is to make the buttons on the address bar thinner with their lines, to better compete with Microsoft Edge in terms of minimalism.
Also, the favicons are too small in the design. I feel they're perfect now, but I would love for some way to remove their background and still see if clearly on the color theme, but I'm not sure that's even possible.
I think your context menu is nice. I'm sure eventually you can customize Vivaldi to but that menu on the right like Firefox. I always prefer menus and panels on the left. But I can see that if you put the V logo on the same row as the buttons, you leave more space for the tabs. I have my tabs at the bottom, so I don't really notice this, but this would help others who have their tabs on the top. I may even like to put my tabs at the top if it were less crowded.
Anyway, I've kept notes over the past few months on the suggestions for UI that I would like to see eventually. I don't think all of these will make it to the final version 1.0, but I hope they all eventually make it at some point or another:
- Change red V logo on top-left of the browser to something different, like changing it's color according to the site's theme, or making it a plain white V. Either 1) make it a plain white V with no background, or 2) make the current background change colors according to the website's color theme. This would make it less jarring on blue themed websites like Google Docs, and would give it a more seamless look.
- Make the trash can in the bookmarks and notes panel just like the one on the tab bar. The tab bar's trash can looks so much better.
- Animations throughout the browser, like tabs, panels, etc. 60 fps if possible. Have the transition of the panel coming in and out to be smoother and less jagged(this won't make it anytime soon, but it's still considered design due to it's UI function).
- Remove color gradients from things like the + sign in the Speed Dial, buttons in the bookmarks bar/find in page bar, folders in the panel/bookmarks/notes. It makes the UI more consistent. If you're gonna go modern, go all the way!
- Speaking of changing those colors to remove those gradients, I'm not sure how I feel about the Speed Dial's current look, with the labels at the top in the light theme. It looks fine, but I'm not sure how I feel about it or what would be a better idea.
- Light panel. And consider making the panel thinner too.
- Change the scrollbar. Right now it looks like Edge's but bigger. Make it more like Safari's or something. That's minimalistic and modern. But if you can't do that in Windows, then make it like Edge's, which is thinner than it is now.
- Give the option to remove the home button.
- Consider making the buttons on the address bar thinner, as in making it's lines thinner. Microsoft Edge has thinner buttons, and this would help make Vivaldi compete as a really modern-looking browser.
- UI responsiveness, such as panel coming in and out much more smoothly. It's pretty stuttery right now.
- Download Chrome Dev for Android. Notice how some sites like Vivaldi.com make the address bar slightly lighter colored than the browser itself. Consider doing something like that for Vivaldi(I have my tabs at the bottom, so it would look cool with that).
I hope that Vivaldi sees this and is interested in following a lot of my suggestions to make the browser even nicer looking and more impressive to the eye. Right now, it's pretty much the most attractive looking browser(Edge is too), and this would help it a lot in being the best looking.

I like to see the ability to go straight to the bug report url (https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/) from the Vivaldi Menu (the one you get by clicking the Vivaldi icon in the top left corner)
-
Please add "Open link in the same tab in subgroup" or something like that to right mouse menu when click on link.
Another my idea is to add maybe not a function, but more something like easter egg. :> This browser's name was after Antonio Vivaldi, famous and well-know composer most known as the author of the Four Seasons. So why not make a hidden fragment of Vivaldi's music in Vivaldi browser? For example when user enter a specified key combo the short fragment of Four Seasons play in Vivaldi window from computer's speakers. :>
And last thing: Please add a smooth animations for opening and closing tabs. This feature is not neseserly for good browser working, but this is a cosmetic way to improve Vivaldi's look, design and presentation.

opera's animated speeddial background (Theme) is fantastic!
I'd like to use Opera's rain dropping background on Vivaldi.
also want speeddial background theme automatic switcher like slide but with animated one. -
I would like to suggest the addition of https://ixquick.com to the default search engine selection included with Vivaldi. And for those who would like a European URL, https://ixquick.nl
Ixquick is a privacy oriented search engine, like duckduckgo, and received the first such certification in the EU in 2008.
Ixquick does not record your IP address etc. Details here: https://ixquick.com/eng/protect-privacy.html?hmb=1Ixquick has a related search engine, startpage, which forwards your search terms anonymously to google. So if one really wants a google search without being logged or the results being restricted to one's own google search bubble, startpage can also be used.
(I am not connected with ixquick)
(my apologies if this has already been done since I installed vivaldi a few months ago)

If the developing team not very soon makes it possible to "open URL" from the File menu, as well as "open file", I will leave Vivaldi. I'm not interested in having the address bar, or any other bar, occupying my screen. This ought to be very simple to implement. The developing team has failed in most requests so far, and focused on browsing features any other browser has, instead of making Vivaldi convenient for developers and simple users. Do they read this thread at all? I doubt.
-
I'd like to see the option to empty the trash bin [upper right corner at end of Tab bar (with Tab bar at the top of the screen)] automatically when Vivaldi is closed. Thanks!
-
Another Feature Request/Change I'd like to see here is to change the title of the "Reply Topic" box at the beginning/top of each forum to "New Topic" to avoid confusion. "Reply" box/option should appear after a forum post if the user is logged in, in my opinion.
Actually, after thinking about this, all these postings are just "replies" to an original post & not new postings. My apologies!

Another feature or change I think would be good is the ability to delete Speed Dial Suggestions &/or transfer them to the Bookmarks from a right-click menu on any of the suggestions. In others words, using the right mouse button on any 'suggestion' would open a menu with 3 options: remove that particular suggestion, add it to Bookmarks & the third option would be to delete all of them. Thanks for your consideration & all your efforts!
