(History of) Vivaldi Feature Requests

Are you talking about the Beta that just came out? You mean their going to continue updating that standalone Beta on the front page, while making snapshots for it on their blog, and that one will have the new features? I think that's how all software works, doesn't it?
If so, I'll still definitely go for the snapshots so I can get the new features. Where does Chromium 46 fit in? Isn't 46 the one Chrome Beta uses? So would Vivaldi Beta use it, or will that go to the snapshots?
-
No. This Beta is on Chromium 45 and will be the FIRST Stable version after it passes Beta, While it's in Beta, it will get debugs and performance tweaks only, no new features. From now to end of life, Vivaldi Stable Version 1 will receive NO new features.
A new version, based on Chromium 46 will soon enter development, and it will eventually mature into Vivaldi Stable Version #2. While #2 is under development, Stable 1 will continue in use untouched and unmodified (except for the rare security or stability update) until Version #2 is ready to replace it as the new stable.version. While Version #2 is in the Developer Snapshot stage, before it reaches Beta stage, it will receive new features and modifications. Once IT reaches Beta, it will also cease to get new features and modifications, and will get only debugs and performance enhancements until it is ready for prime time, at which time it will be released as the new Vivaldi Stable Version 2.

Wow Ayespy, thank you so much for taking a lot of time to answer all my questions on everything tech. Hope I'm not too overwhelming with them. I'm just interested in tech, that's all. And your new answer answered a lot for me, and also raised a lot more questions.
Now I understand the release cycle of software, which I never knew before. This means that the next snapshot that comes up is still Alpha, but Alpha for Vivaldi 2.0. Does this mean the V team is going to develop 2 release cycles at the same time, both the Beta 1 and Alpha 2? How is that going to affect the efficiency of their development, are they going to do it all at the same time or divide their teams or hire new devs? I hope they will get monetized soon so they can hire more devs. I also hope that the development will speed up now that the very basic building blocks of the browser is now put in place. Do you think it'll get faster?
And if Alpha 2 is going to be based off of Chromium 46, that would mean the next snapshot we get would have no choice but to be in Chromium 46 immediately, right? So we might actually see Chromium 46 in a week from now or whenever they release their next snapshot.
This would also mean that, somewhat sadly, Vivaldi Sync and Mail aren't going to make it at all to Vivaldi 1.0. But it should for sure make it to 2.0!
In your other comment, you said that the improvements in Chromium 46 will only be incremental. Do you say that because of Google? There was that article another user posted about what Opera is doing in the development of Chromium 46, and that sounds a little more than incremental. And eventually I bet V will lend a hand in the development of the engine. Hoping Chromium can match what Presto was and more!
So I guess this means we're gonna be not Beta testers, but Alpha testers, as I'm looking forward to new features coming.

First, congratulations on the new beta release. I've been using vivaldi for some time now and really enjoy the browser.
Now, what I would like to see in Vivaldi is tab sessions. I like to divide my browsing activities into sessions. For example when I'm doing school work I would have a School session only containing tabs related to my school work. This way I avoid having too many open tabs. There is a chrome extension, called "Session Buddy", that does this. However the transition between sessions is not smooth as one have to open the Session Buddy tab, select the desired session which is then opened in a new browser window.
I'd love to have an integrated tab session functionality where changing between sessions could be done in the same browser window. A tab session overview accessed from the side menu the same way as bookmarks would be perfect.

I am sure it will come one day. Meanwhile, it is easy to emulate with bookmark folders. Just create a new bookmark folder for each project and open all of the bookmarks from the bookmarks folder.

One feature I miss from the old opera is the ability to change a web page to a speed dial web page by simply doing Ctrl + 1 (for speed dial icon 1) Ctrl + 2 etc… Obviously Ctrl + 1 is now mainly used for cycling through tabs now, but perhaps simply implementing the feature and letting the user decide upon the shortcut for each speed dial icon would be widely appreciated.

I think it's entirely possible Vivaldi could have three development streams going at once, after the Stable is released: Maintaining the Stable, bugfixing and refining the Beta, and innovating on the Developer Snapshots.

I used to use Opera back in the day, and the one extremely unique feature that I absolutely loved was Fast Forward. Fast forward is absolutely amazing if you're reading a sequential web page like a web comic or many other things.
I'm VERY excited to see it back, however it is DESPERATELY missing a keyboard shortcut. Both fast forward and rewind really truly need some sort of shortcut so that I can use them quickly and efficiently. I wouldn't mind if it was an add-on, but considering the functionality is already in place, it shouldn't be too hard to make a keyboard shortcut, would it? Plus it would highlight this extremely useful unique feature of Vivaldi.

- ● Ctrl + mouse wheel for zooming
- ● true customizable UI like Opera 12: most importantly custom and rearrangeable buttons
- ● support scroll bars in extension popups (I don't know if this is a bug and/or if it is caused by Vivaldi or the extension. The attached image shows that uMatrix's popup can be too long from time to time.)

Feature request:
Open a new tab in background
It was in Opera and I miss it badly.. Please add an option to replace / or just an option to open new links, tabs in background.
-
Now that vivaldi supports chrome extensions, the only thing I miss to switch to it is ability to set what is opening in new tab. As I can see, now it is fixed to vivaldi speed dial, but I would like to open some specific url (site or extension) in new tabs. IMO, that would be great improvement.

url on hover from items in bookmarks bar
Addition of chromium Tab to search functionality -
One thing that is really annoying when browsing the web is sudden unwanted sound. Some sort of management of what sites are allowed to "make sound" and not would be really nice. A setting that would deny all sites making sound, and then the user could add exceptions as needed (exception for youtube for example).
This issue is something that I've been frustrated with for years, because I always want my system sound enabled (for media players and youtube for example). And I don't want to block flash on all sites, and even that is not always helping because of HTML5 video.
Edit:
Such a feature would be THE killer feature for me. And I would use Vivaldi for generations to come if its implemented -
I checked several pages back but couldn't see a request like this, so I'm posting it, as I'm not sure if it qualifies as a missing feature or a bug:
Bookmarks bar: middle mouse click on a bookmark inside a folder should open that bookmark in a new tab. Currently this works for bookmarks that are directly in the bookmarks bar but not on bookmarks that are in a folder in the bookmarks bar.I just need this, and I'm making a switch from Opera. I'm getting sick of it.

Websites' autozoom, definitely… I've got another browser, which can resize all pages automatically. It's really useful on my 1920x1080 - everything is bigger and I don't need to use scaling manually (by CTRL +/- or scroll wheel). Vivaldi looks awesome and works really well but without autozoom, I won't use it...

@wituss:
[ol]
- Rearanging tabs in Tab Stack by drag and drop
- Tab Stack - New page opens in same Tab Stack
[/ol]
I truly hope I'm wrong but being now in beta and still having the same cumbersome and limited tab stacking possibilities as months ago do not show that this is high up in the priorities.
On the other hand the look&feel of (unstacked) tab arangements improved significantly so maybe there is hope. -

There are three ways to open tabs in background (if you are using the Beta, ver. 1.0.303.52). Middle-click, ctrl+click, or right-click and select from context menu. OldeOpera did it just this way. NeuOpera always opens new tab in background and there is NO WAY to make it open in foreground which, frankly, pisses me off. When I open in new tab it's because I want to see it - not because I want to go hunting for the tab to focus it.

Known issue, reported often. It will be addressed.
