Solved User avatar icon not displaying
-
I have a few user profiles set up for different purposes. Being able to do that is one of the things I love about Vivaldi. Each of them has an avatar assigned to it. On all but one, the avatar displays in the toolbar to the right of the address bar. But one of them is named "Tom" and, though it has an avatar assigned to it, the avatar I have selected doesn't show up in the toolbar. It just shows the generic gray figure:
When I click on the avatar in the toolbar it does show the one I've selected:
If I click on Manage People it also shows the avatar:
I'm wondering if anyone could show me how to change this so the avatar shows up, or if I'm misunderstanding how this works, explain it to me.
Also, is there any way to have the avatar show up for the Vivaldi icon in the Windows taskbar? I often have two different profiles open and it would be nice to see which icon corresponded to which profile.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!

The issue with profile avatars not showing when managing profiles has been fixed in the latest version: Vivaldi 5.2.

@tomgoodell Hi. For some reason Vivaldi has hidden the more advanced "Manage Profiles" UI by default...
If you go to Settings > Appearance > Menu you will be able to add the Manage Profiles back, for instance into the Tools menu. Just filter by 'manage' and you will find it.
By choosing that you will get a UI where you can edit a profile and set an avatar.
Alternatively, you can enter the URL directly:
chrome://settings/manageProfile
Note that this changes the URL tovivaldi:
but it's actually a Chromium settings page. -
@pathduck Thank you! I was able to follow your instructions and add Manage Profiles to my Tools menu. However, it's still not working, even after closing all instances of Vivaldi and relaunching it. On my other user profiles the avatars all show up as assigned, but not on this one. When I posted my request this profile just had the gray generic icon. Now it has my account icon:
As before, if I go to Manage People, it shows the avatar that I assigned to this profile:
The profile I'm logged into is Tom.
Do you have any further suggestions as to how to get the avatar to display properly?
Thanks again for your help.

@tomgoodell When you're logged in to the Vivaldi Sync service it will show your community avatar and name there. But it has no relation to the avatar or name shown in Manage Profiles. It's two separate systems.
I also have just "Person 1" as the main profile with a random image, and no need to change it as I only use 1 profile anyway.
But you got the avatar changed, and a nice choice

@pathduck Got it, thanks!

@pafflick Not really, as I mentioned in the first rc for 5.2, if you manage profiles from the profile that isn't logged in to the sync account, the sync avatars still don't show when managing profiles. And if you click on the profile to view info about it, still doesn't show the sync avatar.
This issue has not been fully solved and should not be marked as such.
-
@altcode These are separate issues. There are a couple of bugs opened regarding profile avatars. I am only referring to the issue reported by OP.

I fail to understand how those could conceivably be seen as separate issues. But I'll digress on that point anyways.

That's still not the case at all though.

The profile I'm logged into is Tom.So Tom had the problem that if he viewed his profile through manage people menu when logged into the profile named Tom, it would display the profile icon rather than the sync account icon.
VB-77729 "fixed" this, but only for the profile that is currently logged in provided it even comes with the corresponding sync account. If here were to view his profile through manage people menu when logged into the profile named Person 1, which I'll gander doesn't have the same sync account (or any sync account at all), then the manage people menu would still not display the sync account icon.
I'll reiterate that this thread shouldn't be marked as solved.
In any case, I opened a new bug report to cover all the inconsistencies with profile account info and sync account info.
VB-88057 - Profile info does not use sync account info consistently
I made some mockups to illustrate what I think it should look like (the sync account name shouldn't overwrite the profile name!)

That's the point. That was the issue addressed by VB-77729 and discussed here.

That's a whole different issue (never raised by the OP BTW). I'm not sure if fetching sync account avatars using other profiles wouldn't be considered a security issue. If anything, a special workaround would have to be made (to download the avatar while logged in to Sync, and share that file locally with other profiles), whereas the avatar not showing inside the synced profile was clearly a bug (same with the avatar not showing in profile's details - which is also a bug).

I think it's better to make a new thread for these other issues rather than "hijacking" this one. There's still some work to be done on the Profiles side - the current implementation requires some polishing, and hopefully, we can improve it in our future releases.
