4.0.2312.25 uBlock not working after latest update
-
Hello,
I just updated to Vivaldi version 4.0.2312.25 and suddenly uBlock Origin stopped working.
Does this have something to do with the build-in adblocker? -
@sonofdiablo No, its working perfectly for me, by "not working" what do you mean exactly? is the pop-up not showing up, or is it just not blocking ads on specific websites and so on?
-
@hololoyoj It was not blocking ads on any side and the element zapper/picker didn't work either.
But I just figure out I had to open everything in new tabs, reloading a tab didn't help the issue.What I tried:
Reload tabs where ads were not blocked = Didn't work
Disable, then re-enable uBlock = Didn't work
Open the same URL in a new tab = Works -
@sonofdiablo Try re-installing ublock then, this seems to be an issue on uBlock origin's end.
-
@hololoyoj it looks like it works on new tabs, so I'm good.
Just didn't expect new tabs to work when reloads didn't work, so didn't try that at the beginning. -
@sonofdiablo So, what you are saying is that reloading the page doesnt work but opening the url in a new tab works?how is that solved?
-
@gwen-dragon As mentioned, it seems like the extension works for new tabs, just not existing tabs.
So simply moving all existing tabs to new tabs fixes the issue.
Though that could be a tedious job for people with a high amount of tabs.@hololoyoj Yes that seems to do the trick, for some reason

@sonofdiablo 4.0.2312.27 is the current version for Stable! Update.
I just updated again and now the same issue came up, seems like every time I update Vivaldi this happens
-
@sonofdiablo Hold on, i dont get it, so is it working as expected or not?
-
@hololoyoj not really but.. it works.
So expected would be having to do nothing, but that isn't the case.
The simple solution (for the user) is to close the current tab and open the same URL in a new tab. -
@sonofdiablo Thats painful to do all the time, just re-install uBlock, that'll probably solve the issue
-
@gwen-dragon Here is a screen recording hope this clears it up for you.

@hololoyoj I will try that if we don't figure out another solution, but it would be great if we could track down the underlying issue.
-
@gwen-dragon uhm, even if I make a new profile I won't be able to update Vivaldi now that I'm at the latest version, so I won't be able to reproduce the issue as it first comes up after an update
-
@sonofdiablo You can install the older version as a Standalone install, then test if the same happens when upgrading. You can also make a copy or 2-3 of the Application folder, to run through the test several times.
-
@pathduck Where would I be able to download an older version of Vivaldi?
-
@sonofdiablo Here: https://vivaldi.com/download/archive/
You can also grab it directly from the blog release posts:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/category/82/vivaldi-blogMake sure to install as Standalone. Do not install over your existing install.
-
@pathduck Thank you!
I was not able to reproduce the issue with a standalone installation.
So seems to be an isolated issue. -

@pathduck Thank you!
I was not able to reproduce the issue with a standalone installation.
So seems to be an isolated issue.So I tested this out, cause I've been having the same problem on snapshot for the past several? updates.
Standalone installation of 4.0.2312.27 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro 20H2 build 19042.1052. Added uBlock Origin and Tampermonkey from the chrome store, and made sure Lazy Load Tabs was on, exited and re-opened.
If Tampermonkey is enabled it seems to prevent something from loading at browser start. The easiest was to test this is with loading a hibernated tab; uBlock Origin will fail to load custom filters, as well as what @sonofdiablo experienced. Reloading/Force Reloading the tab does not work, but closing and re-opening the tab does.
I've also experienced this happening with The Marvellous Suspender; re-opening the browser with Tampermonkey enabled and a tab suspended will result in a completely blank page. As above, closing and re-opening the tab will fix things.
Both Tampermonkey/Beta and Violentmonkey/Beta cause this issue (and possibly any other extension that works the same way?). The best way I've found to deal with the problem is disable Tampermonkey before exiting, then re-enable it when re-opening.
I've also tested this on Chrome Version 91.0.4472.106 (Official Build) (64-bit) and this does not occur.

@elesands Thank you for this extended testing!
It didn't even cross my mind Tampermonkey could be the issue, I didn't want to test further as I have too many extensions to quickly test the compatibility of all of them.But I greatly appreciate your work and will keep this in mind should the issue arise again.
