Importing from M2 fails at IRC accounts (?)
-
While the thread https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/58193/importing-from-m2/17 is about "which profile to use" this one is about issues I have encountered using a standalone install 3.7.2218.52 on Win10
-
you can apparently trigger the import of mail even when mail is not turned on in vivaldi://experiments. Didn't try what happens if you do
-
In M2 I have 2 IMAP, 1 POP and 2 IRC and one legacy IMAP account which has an email address but does not contain any server info and does not download or send email ever (just the mail still in the database).
In the mail panel I immediately see one of the active IMAP accounts, the POP account, and the fake email address I use in of one of the IRC accounts. --> Import wizard doesn't realize this is an IRC account?
I guess it's the that's what makes the import wizard just spin in circles saying "import in progress" but nothing happens then. -
if I click outside of the import wizard box it just closes and is nowhere to be found. Does the import continue in the background?
I don't want to mess with my M2 accounts in order to find out if the problems 2 and 3 really hinge on the IRC accounts that I use. I am happy to test further but don't like messing with my Opera mail account. I am happy to try things like copying the mail folder and editing accounts.ini to have only relevant accounts, but since that is a lot of work I'd appreciate if I got some guidance as to what tests would actually help the devs.

As Jon requested, let's write some Mail import bug reports
Mail import fails at first IRC account: VB-80668
-
My M2 fails on IRC account as well.
I have an IRC account (that I never use, but was still in M2), a POP account and a few IMAP accounts.
When I attempt to import, the POP account gets added (shows up in the mail panel) but the credentials are pulled in from the IRC account. No mail gets imported. And none of the IMAP accounts are added.
I have tried deleting the IRC account and importing, but after the POP account gets added, no mail is imported. And none of the IMAP accounts are added.
I have also tried deleting the IRC account and the POP account. If I try to import (IMAP accounts only) none of the IMAP accounts are added.

I had noticed this thread and your reported bug, but still I did not remember it when I ran into the same problem with another user having an RSS account in his accounts.ini. That is bug # VB-80936
It got fixed this morning and will be included in the next minor release. It should also fix this issue for you. Let me know how it goes once you get the upgrade. -
@ltgorm just tested with the snapshot that came out right now by adding a new blank profile and triggering import. It found all the accounts this time (i.e. no stopping at the IRC account) and started importing, but some 10 minutes along the way Vivaldi just closed (both profiles at the same time) while I was playing solitaire, i.e. no interaction on my part with Vivaldi.
Some other oddities beside the crash:
-
After restarting all accounts have the server data filled in but are offline accounts (ok because now it doesn't mess with anything).
-
Most but not all emails are marked unread.
-
Two accounts have an "Imported unknown folder" that contains 0 messages in one account (vivaldi.net) and 5 in my main account (with all-inkl.com). Two emails in that last main account are empty with time stamp 0 (1970) -> reason for import aborting?
Let me know what I can do to help narrowing down the problem(s). For example, is there some crashlog somewhere that might help identifying what led to the crash?
(M3 standard install synced with Opera M2 via IMAP)
(M3 snapshot after M2 import that aborted somehow)

@wildente I believe accounts are imported as offline on purpose.
I previously had the issue where the import failed. With the latest snapshot the import finally worked. I imported using Linux Mint, and my M2 was from a standalone install. There appear to be a few issues.
First, there is the issue with the import interface, which I reported previously as VB-80886 (the option to choose a folder doesn't appear unless you switch away form Opera 12.x and switch back in the import menu dropdown).
-
The import time seemed way off. For something like 7000 emails, it estimated about 19 hours. It probably took about 10 minutes.
-
The message for importing mail simply says 'Check Status Bar for progress' and never changes to 'Done'.
-
I get a lot of 'Imported Unknown Folder' imported. Some are empty, some have a few emails, and one (for a hotmail account) has almost 2000 emails. I can't really trace these to any actual email folders or anything in M2.
-
The import also seemed to confuse some folders between accounts. For example, in M2 I have a folder named 'OMBSent' with one email address which includes emails from an abandoned email account. In Vivaldi, the 'OMBSent' folder is included as a folder in 3 different email accounts, each having some of the emails that M2 had, and well short of the total number of emails that were actually in the original folder in M2.
-
I think some emails are missing from the import. It's hard to tell with so many. But as a comparison, I set up one account manually in another Vivaldi installation, and Vivaldi was able to grab a subfolder which included one email. In the test install I did for the import, Vivaldi failed to import the subfolder, so the one email in the subfolder does not seem to be imported.
-
For me, the most disappointing issue is that 'Labels' from M2 are not imported. Importing of labels was the main reason I was waiting for the import feature.

'Imported Unknown Folder'
Confirmed. It does not seem to happen for every mail archived offline, though.

Confirmed.

Hover over
Received
andSent
in both O12 and V4 and compare the numbers (possibly delete feeds first or reset / adjust filters so that both show the same type of mails (e.g. spam)). For me, instead of 300k, there are around 80k mails available in V4. Yes, there are some duplicate messages, but not hundreds of thousands. I think that rather mails that "belong" to another account (because they were sent to another account which was also imported but now reside in an offline account?! or they were sent from an account not available any more?) pose issues here. Also, it seems that the
0
account (offline account?!) cannot show any mails. -

I'll play around with importing a bit more when I have some free time. Maybe it will work better if I delete some accounts and import them one at a time or something.
