Internal PDF Viewer vs Google PDF Viewer
-
Just spent 2 hours trying to find out why my CMS stopped displaying PDF files in browser and forces downloading them. After lots of debugging, I found out it was related to Vivaldi.
I remembered that several days ago I disabled Google PDF Viewer Extension, but Internal PDF Viewer is still enabled. Unfortunately, PDFs are not displayed in browser when using this configuration, and the only way to have them displayed - enable both (Google and internal) PDF viewers. Hence, some questions:
- Is it expected, or is it a bug?
- If it's expected, why do we need two separate PDF viewer checkboxes in Vivaldi settings if one of them does nothing (except confuses users) anyway?
Vivaldi 3.6.2165.36 (Stable channel) (64-bit)

Hi @toxpal , I'm using wordpress for my website and a link to a pdf-file is opened with internal vivaldi-pdf-viewer.
What CMS are you using? -
I use my own custom CMS (I'm a programmer). It always worked fine, and only stopped working after I disabled Google PDF Viewer, but I forgot about it, and thought there's a bug in my code. But Firefox works fine.
Unfortunately, Vivaldi only displays PDF inline if I enable Google PDF Viewer along with internal viewer. Do you mean that PDF view in browser works for you even if you disable Google PDF Viewer?
P.S. You need to restart Vivaldi after disabling Google PDF Viewer.
-
@toxpal You are right! After restarting Vivaldi I have the same issue here. I will now check if it is happening with non-CMS too.
EDIT:// It is the same.

Could devs take a look at this, please?

I will, but I have little hope. Found and reported a big bug (confirmed by other users) one year ago, still no progress

Personally I prefer an external PDF viewer and have used Foxit Reader, one of many you can chose from, for many years. It is not quite as convenient as an in Browser reader but I can make comments, highlight, etc. and my workflow is already designed around an external reader.
Just a thought. -
@greybeard I also use external PDF viewer when working with PDF files on my computer. Unfortunately, there are some situations when internal PDF viewer is a must. For example, I work with clients' contracts (thousands of them), and very often and I need to take a quick look (just for a few seconds) at them (contracts are stored on web), so viewing them in browser is essential. Otherwise, it would be a nightmare to download and view every single PDF I need.
-
@toxpal Totally agree and understand that argument for internal viewer.
-
@greybeard
Yes, and then here comes the fundamental question, why isn't it automatic on Linux? Namely, if you have an external pdf viewer.
I use it, in each case I have to select the location where I "temporarily" saved the file,
so I can watch.
Why don't you put it in / tmp automatically? If I needed it, I would click save instead of opening. Both buttons exist, but they are completely unnecessary.
-
@toxpal @greybeard @TbGbe I just found out that with checking both options in settings (Google pdf-viewer and internal pdf-viewer) such files open in new tab,
but when clicking on an attached pdf-file in Vivaldi-mail, it's the other way as it is when Google-pdf-viewer isn't checked.
