TRG got tired of GoodcommunityOS (no wonder ) and swears on Arch Linux GUI now
I watched that t'other night, & was initially intrigued by the title & his opening words, coz IMO he has a good positive mutually-supportive relationship with eznix, so i thought it was odd if he was now dumping on him. Then, ofc, as the video went on, it became apparent that it was all parody. I do think however, he needs to be a bit more nuanced in his delivery, as it would be too easy for some viewers to take him at his word & actually believe he was genuinely dumping on eznix.
I mean, quite apart from the obviously sarcastic mention of biological enhancements, i already was smelling a rat anyway from many things, not least his banging on about ALG finally being an ISO freeing the proletariat from the tyranny of Firefox.
PS: @hlehyaric please pull your finger out. We're all counting on you to
See The Light
, & come on over to the land of unicorns. You need to be able to sing the song One Of Us, One Of Us. At the moment, instead, you're One Of Them. Euw!

Heehee. OMZ, dependency hell. Such fun.

@npro Show off!
Well done.
However, only a B+, coz...
- Light bright retina-murdering theme, eeeeeeeek!
- Horizontaller, aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh.
However, bumped up to A- in consideration of extra effort displayed by moving to the morally superior VM.

@guigirl thx
. It's vanilla, not my fault
However I don't have a problem with it 'cause this monitor I'm using lately is crap and with dark themes I can't see anything
-
@npro How are you going with your greasemonkeying? I've never used it at all, so have no idea if it could possibly be a decent substitute for uM/uBO?
-
@guigirl That's what I'm hoping by digging into it, still too early. Need to get the passthrough working first.

Presumably, a certain VQA fella will be happy today.

I suspect i might download the KDE ISO & take it for a spin.
Many hours later...
Or not.
Ach, Calamares has completely spoiled me. So now when a totally Slacko person encounters her first Slackware ISO in the wild, expecting to just lazily click click click her way thru' yet another Calamares, she suddenly realises that she'd much rather go drink some scotch & worry about this
actually needing to think

A few days ago i discovered that somehow
samba
had become [re]installed in my Arch Plasma, so i removed it [again], sans-drama. Presumably it had returned sometime due to being some optional dependency from some other package that i actually do want.Yesterday, i discovered
samba
was also installed on my Lappy [which, for several months, has been Mint Cinnamon {long painful story, pl-ease don't ask!}]. I therefore went to nuke this unwanted package there as well. Nope, I'm sorry Dave, i can't do that. The super hyper mega glorious packaging system that isapt
, in its infinite wisdom & supreme competence, makessamba
a hard dependency for heaps of apps & packages that i do want to retain. With great irony i noted that most of those apps are also ones i have, & want, in Tower's Arch, which as i said does not have that stupidity.Buntu

samba - Mint Cinnamon - Buntu - apt
well we have lots of guests here using
apt
so maybe they could advise or refute what you are sayingSince you dislike both and you would like to be
samba
(extrapolate: bs) free (that's what happens when you rely onCalamares-
,
), there's only one mainstream (i.e. including a decent DE) option that I can think of for you, use OpenSUSE Leap ! with KDE for that old laptop, where you can cherry-pick whatever you like with Yast2 (which has no real competitor), creating a nice lean system, and not having to care much about it. Only thing is that 15.4 will be released "soon" (i.e. in June) so you 'd have to upgrade, (and point upgrades didn't always work very reliably for me without some extra cleaning up/fixing in the past), but it will have Plasma 5.24 which is going to be LTS, which is not bad at all I'd say for an old laptop meant for just watching movies and stuff, right?

@npro Welcome to our forum, @TRG -- hope you'll have fun here.

@guigirl Wait until I start talking about Slackware

@npro No wukkas, i'm so slack i can't be arsed to read it.

When you posted, i'd not watched his latest one on Slackware [it was in my feeds & coz i'm silly i thought i'd already seen it when in fact i'd not
]. However, just this moment i've finished exercise-biking my way thru it. I really do like OTB; i find him very comforting somehow. His vid on it is really good, but it only bigly reinforced my conviction yesterday to abandon the VM before even getting right into it.
I'm just not the target demographic. It wasn't needing to have to manually setup the partitions [though t'other night i certainly was not in any mood for that], it was my dawning realisation as i read up more & more about SW about just how much i'd be on my own, eg, needing to manually manage all dependencies myself. There's simply no use-case for me that justifies that, ie, no decent cost/benefit ratio for my satisfaction.
I mean, hey, i enjoy sticking rusty pins into my eyeballs as much as the next gal, but that's just too far out for me to want to bother.
