Soo big power consumption when Youtube videos playing
-
If compare Vivaldi for MAC OS with other (example: Safari) browser, power consumption is diferent 3-10 times — Vivaldi loads CPU near maximum level, Safari loads up to 20%. MACBook Pro late 2013 Core i5 4GB RAM.

@MiklB2 I have the same problem on Windows. It is so severe on my old hardware that it will force a shutdown if watching an HD video. No problem at all on 720. I cannot compare with Safari, but it would not surprise me if Chrome-based browsers are using more power than they should.

My youtube setup to 720 by default. This trouble is on 720 too.

Youtube has multiple codecs they use for video, Safari gets h.264 (Safari on macOS 11 and iOS 14 can get VP9 which also allows 4k). Youtube only sends VP9 to Chrome (chromium based browsers), maybe some older videos might get h.264 to chromium based browsers.
Apple has tried to optimize Safari for power efficiency but they are still limited to what different sites do. I remember when Youtube first got Full HD 1080 support and how macOS & Linux users were getting the biggest CPU spikes (Windows users not as much on higher spec systems), back then Youtube was using the power hungry Flash Player for all videos. I would get CPU spikes of around 140% for 1 YouTube video at 1080.

I might recall a Vivaldi blog post, that said Vivaldi didn't have access to some proprietary codec used in YouTube. Or something. If I'm remembering correctly (and that's a pretty big if), that might have something to do with this.

@MiklB2 I have the same issue but the CPU usage is not as crazy. Maybe it's because I'm on a more powerful machine (MBP 15' 2015).
Having said that, the power consumption is ridiculous for a browser. The fans have to run at full speed, making huge noise that I can hear with my earphones on. This usually happens after a 15-20min playback on Youtube. Sometimes earlier. I have read quite a few posts on this forum and this issue seems to be persisting for quite a while for both PC and Mac.
A few solutions suggested by the team/moderators:
- player around with Vivaldi internal setting on hardware throttling:
vivaldi://flags
- disable all extensions, particularly adblockers
Another one by a user:
- enforce video codec to AVS or h.264/h.265 with third party chrome extensions like:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/h264ify/aleakchihdccplidncghkekgioiakgal?hl=en
or
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/enhanced-h264ify/omkfmpieigblcllmkgbflkikinpkodlk?hl=en
However, none of above solved my issue. I hope Vivaldi team would work out a solution hopefully soon enough. Because it is really annoying and a lot of fans turned away because of this.
