PGP/GPG De-/Encryption and Signing
-
@pointed-stick If this is implemented PGP is likely, maybe S/MIME, but I am not aware of what the plan is exactly. I'm not a Vivaldi developer, so I can't say for sure.
-
Okay, back to being hopeful. Maybe it'll take less than another seven years...
-
@pointed-stick Hmm, i do not thinks so, but as i sadly remember when i was working in office with Opera Mail, S/MIME or OpenPGP was announced but it never got it.
Vivaldi will not step into such dead-end street again. -
Especially since the Vivaldi webmail interface uses Mailvelope to let people send/receive PGP-encrypted e-mail, I think a compatible desktop client is in order. There's a host of open-source mail clients which seem to work just fine (personally tried Thunderbird, Kmail -- no problems. Claws and Evolution have it too, but I haven't properly used the feature, just checked that I can set it up).
Of course, I'd expect that there are probably legal issues preventing Vivaldi from integrating at least some of the available open-source libraries, which brings me back to my pet complaint that Vivaldi is still closed and commercial, which means that as long as the users are not the only/main paying customers there will always be an economic incentive for selling out their users to whatever extent Vivaldi thinks they can get away with. Which might be just a tiny little bit (preconfigured bookmarks, default settings that paying customers prefer...), but there's a well-trodden road from there to the worst excesses of the surveillance economy.
And now I'm sad again
Yes, there's probably very few people using PGP regularly, but lack of support in clients is one of the reasons for it, and it shouldn't be that hard to implement.

@ZakMcKracken Please vote for the existing request PGP-GPG De-encryption and Signing

Now many years later, no OpenPGP support? very sad.
For me this is a lack of Privacy and Trust to use it as a mail client in business. And please vote for S/MIME β https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/90674/add-s-mime-to-vivaldi-mail/1
Need to discuss? See https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/90676/vivaldi-presents-itself-as-a-browser-and-mail-client-for-good-privacy-but-whats-about-mail-signature-encryption-in-these-times/1

No built-in support for OpenPGP unfortunately means there is until now still no reason to use Vivaldi Mail instead of Thunderbird. Creating decentalised stored PGP keys is possible with the built in OpenPGP support in Thunderbird. Storing PGP-keys on a centralised mailserver is in my opinion fundamentally an unsafe practice.
-
Please let me know when the pgp/gpg encryption feature will be added ? I use a mailbox with end to end encryption and without this feature Vivaldi mail client is useless.
-
This is a big blocker, more and more providers are allowing encryption at rest with PGP, the fact that this is not there is a big blocker.
