Open link in new tab and make it have focus
-
When I click on a link to open in a new tab (easy in Safari Mac or Vivaldi Mac, just Command-click the link), the new tab does not have the focus. Safari has a checkbox to make the new tab active when it opens like this. I would like to see Vivaldi have this option as well.
I am left wondering why the new tab with the link did not open, until I notice it IS open, but not in focus. What good is that? I clicked on it because I want to read it. Not to have to go to extra steps like moving the focus to the new tab, or right-clicking and choosing "Open link in a new Tab", which is also two steps.
Could we please add this option (in Preferences/Tabs) in the next update? -
- Shift+Click to Open in a New Tab
- Right-click, then take your pick

Shift-click does not work like this on my Mac (macOS 10.14.6), but Command-click does, as I mentioned.
Right-clicking and then selecting a menu option is two steps. If we had a check box to automatically make a new tab have the focus, we could do it in one step, Command-Clicking a link opens it in a new tab WITH focus.
I do this a lot with search results. I want to view an individual search "hit" in a new tab, while leaving the results tab behind. When I close that new tab, I'm right back at the search results tab, with focus.

That is not the way that it works. Someone makes a feature request, and it gets implemented eventually.
- Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default from March 2018 is still not done. Read the whole thread to understand the issue.
- Option to Open Links in New Tab by Default was apparently deleted for some unknown reason. I suggest opening a new feature request for that.
I am surprised that Shift+Click fails on MacOS, but you could use a mouse gesture for Open Link in New Tab (Over a Link)

Windows vs Mac modifier keys are typically different. I browse with my left thumb near the lower right modifier keys (Control, Option, and Command). Command-clicking is quite common throughout the macOS. For opening things in Finder, for example, Command-clicking opens the folder in a new window (or tab, your choice).
Thanks for the guidance, and I have submitted a Feature Request. It is only for an option, to give the user a choice. -
@HenryAZ I went though this problem and it is annoying since I often am using my browser with my keyboard set aside. The mouse gesture solution isn't bad, but not idea either so I agree with you.
In the meantime, I happen to use an app called "steermouse" which I got because it let's you program pretty much any button on a mouse (don't know which mice work with it, but my Performance MX does). Unless something has changed, Apple's options restrict what the buttons can do.
But steermouse also lets you set up button actions based on the app you are in. So I set my middle button to send the proper click and modifier key to open a link in a new tab and give it the focus (but only in Vivaldi). Works great except for one thing. It works with links on webpages, but if I go to the bookmark list down the side, that same middle button opens the tab in the background! Seems they should at least be consistent!
So on the bookmark list, I have to left-click to open with focus. But I want the left click to open in the active tab!

unbelievable I'm here in August 2021 wondering the same thing why you do not have a default setting to open a new tab.
I will say one thing Vivaldi advertises the most customizable browser for power users… This is a flat out misleading statement. 90% of all the crap they have is unusable and unwanted. I think the developer did this on purpose to trick users into thinking Vivaldi is for people that like to have settings.
What a load of crap this browser is if it was not for my little bit of hacking skills I would have deleted it. I hacked the program so that upon exiting everything is cleaned and starts fresh. Check your file size I got mine down to 350 MB. The team that monitors this forum they are not here for us there just part of the Vivaldi team which puts together a browser for themselves to monitor everything we do. They're being paid for that. Don't kid yourself this browser is a full-blown Trojan. But to be fair most are.
My version of Vivaldi works keeps itself clean but I do not give it anything above four stars of 10 stars. I was forced to use a chrome based browser this is not by choice. There's a reason why chrome is taking over whatever it is it's not for us and it's not good

No they don't!
https://vivaldi.com
https://vivaldi.com/company/No mention of "power users" anywhere.

Monitoring of this forum is performed by the moderators.
They are users who volunteered to do this, they are unpaid. They are NOT employed by Vivaldi.I do not give it anything above four stars of 10 stars.
I suppose that means all the other browsers available score even less, or you would be using one of them?
So even for you, Vivaldi is the best available (at the moment).
As development continues, I hope it will improve for you as well.
