@Steffie I knew it. I knew it was a lie and a conspiracy. There is no place down under, it's so obvious. How could people live, with feet on the ceiling?
-
We fooled you ALL for soooooo long! I hope you feel silly now.
-
@Steffie A lot of people still believe Australia is a real place and and not a mythical continent, some kind of Atlantis.
-
i was wondering why some random person started following me - I don't post that much here. I presume banning removes any PMs from that user, so we'll never know what she was offering me.

@hlehyaric Yeah, humans are just so gullible. It's why my secret army of purple shape-shifting interstellar lizard-people had such an easy time taking over. We simply invented reality tv & social media... then went to work. Muhahahahaha...

I got the follow but no message, no mail!!
Why??
Am I invisible???I think it’s coz of the default forum settings that allow only people you follow to message you (though I’ve changed that setting, they seem to have first tried to message someone else).
-
@potmeklecbohdan Nope.
I've received messages from people I do not follow.
Actually, I don't follow anyone (I just stalk invisibly)! -
@Gwen-Dragon Well, all the messages I received were actually welcome/useful.
That's why I think spammers don't see me -
@TbGbe But they probably first tried to message someone who keeps the default setting—and failed.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Why can't you just delete this bot/spammer from the forum's database? Ban sounds not enough.
-
@Gwen-Dragon yes I understand that but as @BoneTone also said, why is he still listed as a follower of me and 299+ people if the forum's database does not include him/her anymore?
/added: The only reason I can think of is that it is kept for future legal reasons, or preemptive, in case this bot attack was related to something else -unknown at this time or not for the public- as well, hence the Vivaldi forum/blog/sync upgrade 2 days after that.
-
@Gwen-Dragon done, thanks
-
@npro I don’t understand why it matters. The follow has no consequence, because they can’t actually see your topics when banned. It’s superficial.
-
@npro The user is banned permanently (this effectively makes their account deleted and inactive) but their content may not be immediately removed. the next time there is a purge of deleted content they should go away fully.
-
@luetage For reasons of principles, tidiness and whatnot
Also the user-bot has no content (0 posts) except for some individual spam messages that could be kept for the reasons stated above.

Uh huh, ok then, challenge accepted! Muhahahahaha...

Whilst the advice of @LonM & @luetage seems eminently rational, i confess to still feeling emotionally disquieted simply by the forum Admin not removing even this vestige of following/tracking from each of our accounts. Further on that, it seems weird to me that 300 of us should have to individually contact Admin for this to occur on an individual basis. Why can't Admin themselves recognise the "wrongness" of this situation & unilaterally fix it all up for us?

But ... but ... I'd lose a follower
-
@TbGbe Giggling, here.

It is unsettling to have an account that is known to have been created solely for abusive purposes, and has demonstrated phishing tactics against users, showing up in our lists of followers.
The answers provided here do somewhat alleviate my initial concerns, but not totally. Issues occur in software, admins make mistakes, the possibility for further exposure isn't adequately mitigated in my opinion. Of those 300 users, I'd imagine not all of them will find this thread the next time they login. Some may start new threads in the future & the same discussions would ensue.
I've seen abusive users completely removed in the past, to the point that their posts and profile page no longer exist. It seems to me that the same action is warranted in this case. For the admins, it surely would be less work than dealing with individual requests to remove a follower from individual accounts repeatedly.
