Customising your Speed Dial thumbs
-
Important Speed Dial Improvements Needed
[ol]
- Select custom images
- Option to remove Delete button, maybe make it an option to show the delete button. It's hard to recover deleted speed dials from the trash if newbies delete them by mistake
- More than 6 columns of dials: 16 would not be too many on HiDPI screens, but I would be happy with 10 columns at the most
- Automatically resize speed dial to fit window width like in Opera 12.17
[/ol]
Great sum up!
About 1: nice options would be to be able to choose from the following possibilities:
- screenshot (as it is now)
- logo (where Vivaldi auto-detects a logo on a page)
- selected spot on a page (f.i. to set "vivaldi community" apart from "vivaldi.com")
- generated text ("metro" style, "stolen" from how current Opera has implemented this)
- an image selected by the user, from a local file or an url
-
I just did it manualy via database, and it is boring
but the results worth it.
I would really appriciate to at least be able to upload custom image or paste url of picture.

After changin the icons once, it does not take long to change it again.
With as often I do it, I spend less than two minutes changing them. This is one I put together recently. Utilizing the speed dial thumbnails, the UI customization and animated wallpaper function. https://gfycat.com/BossyViciousDragonfly

Where did you get that mail thumbnail? I'm assuming that's for Gmail, and I've looked for that thumbnail, but I can't find a big enough size for that in order to make it look just like that. The smaller sizes for that I've found always put a white background around it because it's not big enough, and that doesn't look nice.

Guys if you mind I made a 5 min worth mod of Simple Speed dial to make it more Vivaldiish.
It isn't advanced as FVD speed dial, but it use the bookmark folders just like the stock one, it has a custom grid, it has and you can replace the stock thumbnails from the contextual menu

\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\1.3.xxx.yy\resources\vivaldi\resources
There are many metroish premade thumbnails there, for people who find them useful.

Thank you, Kirikirasert and The_Solutor. I knew that the stock thumbnails were found in resources/sd_xxx.png, and that I had to edit them in the bookmarks file, but I couldn't create a gmail icon quite as nice as yours was, so thank you.

Most welcome
If you are having some troubles changing colours of some of the icons (I like it in all black http://prntscr.com/bevopq ) it is probably because they are using index colours. If you use Photoshop, click on "Image" from the top toolbar and choose "mode" and change to RGB. -
@cuiba:
I've created a python script that replaces the thumbnails in the speed dial with your own custom pictures. If you want to try it feel free to download it here.
https://github.com/cuiba/Vivaldi-Thumbs-ReplacerWorks Great! :woohoo:

Hi The_Solutor. How to install this mod, please?
-
It's not a mod. It's a modded extension
You can install it just like any not packed extension.
Open the extensions page, check developer mode, use the button to load a not packed extension, point the dialog to the folder where you have the unpacked zip

Can't wait! We all know these mini screenshots (when they work) look awful. It'll be great to use a big beautiful logo for each webpage on my speed dial.

My custom thumbnails put in place with the method explained at the beginning of this thread disappeared once more ; they used to stay for a few weeks before, but not any longer. I am tired of setting them back in place, so they will stay blank until they reload by themselves (if they do) and I will wait until the problem is fixed to choose Vivaldi as my default browser again. For me, the Speed Dial is one of the best features of this program ; if it doesn't work conveniently, other browsers are fine too.
-
These instructions work very well. Before I started I refreshed all thumbnails to make sure everything is in place. From there I only ran into one problem. The IDs I looked up in the bookmarks file were exactly 1 off (it always edited the next thumb) when compared to the IDs shown in DB Browser – and I don't know why. Luckily the program is able to display the current thumbnails, so I didn't have to rely on the bookmarks file. I'd still be interested to know why this happened. I'm on osx 10.11.6 and version 3.9.0 on DB Browser.
edit: for anyone interested in what I did with it -- I didn't put much effort in it and took a minimalistic approach.... image

What part of CSS code responsible for the spacing (vertical and horizontal) between thumbs/entries? I don't need 100 speeddials but I'd like to reduce the distance between my current amount of dials to make them all fit into zoomed speedial page.

Hmm. In VV:
-
SD folder open close action could be similar to that of Opera..
-
SD icon/thumb size should could be 20% smaller to accommodate more on screen.
-
SD has too much spacing between thumbs
-
SD has 2 bars top and bottom taking precious SD space. Bottom bar is as narrow as it can I think but the huge white bar on top (sort of menu) is overkill. One option could be moving the bar-menu to either side, similar to how Opera has it.
-
Panel would much better work on the right side (cuz left side is just under there where most tabs-titles gather) but bottom bar show panel clicky is on the left side.
-
SD could have options for 2 or 3 icon/thumb sizes, the current being the biggest(!) Perhaps all thumbs/icons should follow same size choice, but later on SD could allow individual sizes to be set, like in range of 1-3 or similar.
Just a few thoughts.

"Now back to your SQL Browser search for the entry with the URL starting with http://bookmark_thumbnail/ and ending with the id you got in the Bookmarks file."
How and where do I search this? I just can't find the entry, because I don't know how to search it.
