Avoid "ad.doubleklick.net"-Tabs from external links
-
Hi,
Vivaldi is set as standard browser on my mobile phone. Ad blocking is activated.
When using my mobile Android mail client (K9), I often have to click on links within my received mails in order to go to the linked websites.
In many cases, after clicking on such links, Vivaldi will open, but it will only show an empty tab with an URL in it that starts withad.doubleklick.net...
, followed by a long sequence of characters and numbers and carrying the originally desired link at the end of this URL.
Obviously, the ad blocking is working, because the browser doesn't show any content. Anyway, I have no success in opening the desired link/URL and I always have to edit the URL and delete all the crap in front of the original URL.
How can I get rid of this "ad.doubleklick.net-thing"?
Thanks for helping! -

Hi, I use K9 too but don´t have problems to open links from there.
What kind of links are not working?
I test with links from Nvidia developer channel and Blender.org.
Working with latest snapshots for desktop and Android.Cheers, mib

Obviously, the ad blocking is working, because the browser doesn't show any content. Anyway, I have no success in opening the desired link/URL and I always have to edit the URL and delete all the crap in front of the original URL.Many newsletters use ad.doubleklick.met (and similar services) to track per link performance. It's part of the URL in the email link and designed to redirect you to the final destination after registering the click through. If you are using an adblocker to stop this kind of tracking activity, the redirection (by ad.doubleklick.met) doesn't happen and you need to do exactly what you have been doing: deleting the beginning of the URL.
Positive thing in your case is that this can be done, because the "real" URL is visible. Many times the links are just pointers to database IDs, so a database lookup at the tracking service is needed to get the final destination URL.
Example: I just took a look at SmartBrief newsletter in desktop Thunderbird. It has similar ad.doubleklick.met links, but they are "hidden"; if you mouse over a link, you see a different URL compared to where your browser is sent.
Link shown when mouseover a link in Thunderbird:
https://aom.smartbrief.tom/acton/ct/<some-id>/<some-id>/Bct/<some-id>/<some-id>:ea2a/<some-id>/1?sid=<some-alphanumerical-id>
Actual link shown in source (and opened by the browser):
https://ad.doubleklick.met/ddm/trackclk/<some-id>.<some-id>SMARTBRIEF/<some-id>.<some-id>;dc_trk_aid=<some-id>;dc_trk_cid=<some-id>;dc_lat=;dc_rdid=;tag_for_child_directed_treatment=;tfua=
The final destination, which in this case would be under the smartbrief.tom domain, is not visible in the email (when viewed normally) nor in the browser when using an adblocker.
Note: URLs obfuscated. Because.

Still no fix for this issue?
As written above, forwarding to the final website URL should work automatically. If it doesn't work due to an activated adblocker, I'm quite astonished, because I only use Vivaldi's integrated adblocking...so, why can't this be fixed within Vivaldi?
Thanks -
@deb10042
because it's working like designed (as explained by samuvo).
either you disable the intern blocker (and can open the blocked URLs) or the URLs are blocked and have to edited by you -
@deb10042
Hi, as mentioned before it work for me with enabled ad blocker with weekly mail from Vivaldi, for example.
I use snapshot on Android.
May you wait a few days for next stable, release candidate 2 for stable 3.5 is published a few days ago.Cheers, mib

In my opinion, it's rather inconvenient to completely disable the adblocking in Vivaldi, just to be able to open several URLs from within my (K9-)mails. This would lead to the following process:- open mail in K9
- click on URL in mail
- see that Vivaldi doesn't open mail due to adblocking
- modify Vivaldi settings and disable adblocking
- go back to K9 mails
- click again on URL in mail
- read linked content in Vivaldi browser window (hopefully)
- go to Vivaldi settings again
- reactivate adblocking for further browsing
Completely deactivating Vivaldi's adblocking for just a few mails is like completely deactivating my firewall for just allowing 2 or 3 IPs to "pass through".
In Vivaldi's settings, there is a section, allowing to enter exceptions to adblocking... But how do I create entries here, as soon as a mail-URL has been blocked? Do I have to copy and paste everything in front of the originally intended URL into this exception?
Why can't Vivaldi display an automated warning message upon opening URLs, coming from my mails, asking me, whether I'd like to create an exception from adblocking for this special kind of URL (which is "contaminated" with tracking services)?
That's just my idea, not knowing if it would work this way.
Thanks for helping!

@deb10042
you could add an exception forad.doubleclick.net
but it would "work" always and not only when you open a link from K9how this is done, the helppages ...help you
