Poor performance switching between tabs on a Wordpress website
-
As requested, I am creating a new thread for this problem as per my post here...
I can confirm that today's update has not made a blind bit of difference at all.
It is particularly affecting one website. A website we are currently developing in Wordpress. Switching between tabs on that website literally causes the entire browser to freeze for approx 10 seconds each switch and sometimes, the entire browser just goes black and you can't see anything at all. Not just the window in which you see the website but the controls, address bar, menu, everything - and when this happens, you can move the cursor around and see that it is rolling over links on the page still, but you just can't see anything at all and the only way to overcome this is to end the task.
It generally seems not to perform well with Wordpress' backend at all in general but this particular website is severe and I can work with the same website (frontend and backend) perfectly fine in ANY other browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Brave).
I am wondering if it might be of use if I could share the URL with a Vivaldi developer so they can test for themselves. I don't want to share the URL publicly as the website is under development.
The homepage of said website does use a large HTML5 video on the homepage but this Vivaldi issue is apparent with any page of the website. And like I say, it's fine in any other browser.modedit without quotes a better readability

@zigojacko 10 sec delay is very much, and a freeze!?. I never saw this while working with my wordpress blogs.
Did you try with Private Window (=without any extension) to recue impact of any installed extension?
Did you try a reinstall of Vivaldi (rarely program updates break something)?I will test on a completely different machine with a fresh installation of Vivaldi a moment and advise if the same.

I have extensively tested the same scenario now in multiple environments...
On Mac system (not logged into Vivaldi account) - worked perfectly fine (bit slow but that's largely the machine spec).
On Windows 8 system (not logged into Vivaldi account) - worked perfectly fine.
On Windows 8 system (logged into Vivaldi account) - worked perfectly fine.On my Windows 10 system (logged into Vivaldi account) removed extensions - problem still happens.
On my Windows 10 system (not logged into Vivaldi account) clean session - problem still happens.Based on the above testing, the issue appears related to Windows 10 specifically, or my machine specifically but I am on a pretty high-powered new (less than one year old) silent mini-PC so I highly doubt my machine is the issue but the graphics card is the Intel UHD Graphics 630 and is up to date from Intel.
Not sure if that helps...?

@Gwen-Dragon
Do you have the latest Graphics drivers from Intel website
Windows has not always the latest fixed driversYes, latest direct from Intel's website and I run their real-time driver app that sits in my system tray.
Do you have "Use of Hardware acceleration" active in Settings β Webpages
May be Hardware Acceleration is not activeYes, 'Use Hardware Acceleration when Available' is checked in my settings.

@zigojacko Could you please try using the latest version 2.11 and report back? Set up your profile the same way as you have it at the moment (extensions etc). We have had a few reports from users where after updating to version 3 the browser suddenly started having issues similar to the ones you describe. You can find older releases here
Unfortunately no one has yet managed to reproduce those issues internally (not to the same extend at least) but we might be able to get some insight from your testing.
p/s Staying on 2.11 is not recommended for security reasons but hopefully we can find the root cause of the problem with the aid of your feedback and the Vivaldi team will release a fix soon.

I've downgraded to Vivaldi 2.11 and after 5 minutes of testing, this is the experience:
So far, multiple tabs and switching between them (dealing with the same website as before) has not caused a black screen of the entire browser but after a few minutes of idleness, switching to the tab of the homepage with large HTML5 video does take approx 7-8 seconds.

Thanks for testing. I would be interested to know whether the issue still happens if you turn off hardware acceleration?

I disabled 'Hardware Acceleration', restarted browser and this has fixed the issue.
There is now no more freeze/lag when switching between tabs (this problematic website and any others that I've come across) and since downgrading to 2.11, have not experienced the black screen which seemed graphics related.
So that's excellent for me now and hopefully helps the dev team out at Vivaldi's end. Thanks.

Did you reported the issue to bug tracker? I could add your information to the tracker.
No, I've not reported as an official bug - not really sure how to add to the tracker if you want to do it - thanks

As the issue it is not really reproducible, you solved it by disabling HWA, there is no need to report.
Will there ever be a case where I might need HWA enabled? Or is it generally a life-time enable/disable toggle...?
