"Requires Google Play Services" Notification
-
Hello,
every now and then my phone will show a notification telling me that Vivaldi requires Google Services, asking me to install those.
I am using a Google (Play) free (as much as that is possible at least) Lineage OS version of Android. While the Vivaldi Beta works great, this notification is a bit of a bother. Especially because of the fact, that Vivaldi works fine without it.
Since the same notification also occurs when using the (Chromium-based) Brave Browser I would guess that this issue stems from Chromium itself in general, and not the Vivaldi browser in specific.
Nevertheless, since you recently, and very kindly, actually provided us with an official Download link for the APK I thought I would mention this minor blemish on the Vivaldi Mobile Beta experience on Android phones without Google Services.
I will try to observe whether this happens on specific webpages (that might try to connect to google in some way), or if it is just a random r. As I said, it happens infrequently and so far only 2 or 3 times since release of the Vivaldi Mobile Beta.
Kind regards,
Topha

Good to get some feedback from someone with a de-googled phone.
Bad that these nags open however. You can see which external google components are used here
https://www.appbrain.com/app/vivaldi-browser-beta/com.vivaldi.browser
and I wonder if it is because of the Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) or Chromium dev tools.https://public.addonsdetector.com may reveal more info about the various libraries used.

Ok, so it definitly happens on more curious (intrusive) websites.
Due to the lacking extension support at this stage I mostly use Vivaldi Mobile for sites that I like and trust when on the go. At home I block Ads using Pi-Hole.
So out of curiosity I just went to welt . de, a news website belongig to a German publishing house with great power and little morals and the rather large amount of cookies and trackers you would expect from a site like that, and what do you know? The Google Play Services Notification appears.
If it helps I can give you a query log from my Pi-Hole, showing which domains are blocked when visiting sites like that. I will do some experimenting over the next couple of days and try to gather some reliably documentation on when exactly this happens.
But as I said, it happens on other Browsers as well, so it might just be a Chromium or even Android (which you can probalby never completely de-Google...) related issue.
Btw: Nice to see the chart about Vivaldis popularity on the appbrain link you provided. Seems to be a good start
