Vivaldi M3 - mail client, when?
-
I know these days everyone thinks that all IMAP servers are virtually unlimited (Google, Hotmail, Yahoo!...) but the truth is that only a very small number of well-known online providers actually have those resources. The vast majority of mail servers have a fixed limit of megabytes and the user will have to clear the inbox eventually.
So it's vital to have the ability to take messages off the server and still read them in the mailer... if that's not through POP (which actually seems a straightforward option to me) then Vivaldi will need to develop an auto-archiving system.
This is not a luxury - my main mail address (which I'm keeping since it's been the same since the nineties) is limited to 25MB and I believe the Vivaldi mail also has a limit.

You will get POP3 in M3 as not all mail providers give users free IMAP.
Ironically, these days it's more like "not all mail providers give users free POP" - but while both systems are in widespread use then of course Vivaldi should support both.
(But good to have it confirmed - I was shocked we were even asked the question, to be honest!)
-
As mentioned, SO FAR it only does IMAP. At the moment, It's not clear whether we will have to wait for the POP3 capability to be finished before the first test release. I have argued that it ought to be released for testing first, and then POP3 finished as soon as practicable after that.
This being the case, I would hate to see people disappointed by an early release if it doesn't already contain all it will ultimately be able to do. We already see that with the browser - folks complaining about a missing feature as though it was a conscious choice to omit it, rather than it being a waypoint we have not yet reached.

Glad to hear it! I still strongly prefer POP to IMAP precisely because it does download and store eMails locally. I personally believe greatly in owning and backing up my own data, particularly my personal or business communications. For various reasons, I archive my eMail in multiple topical folders and retain them for many years for record/legal purposes. That's something that is simply unreliable to entrust to online IMAP providers whose retention policies (or very existence) may come and go.
-
I think the Vivaldi team will add it to the browser, when it's ready. I'm sure they will need to tweak this or that, polish it up and make it ready for prime-time.
I for one, can't wait to be able to use it. Vivaldi will be my browser of choice. I like the idea of having both the web browser and e-mail integrated.

@purgatori: never say never.

That would be a HUGE task - Exchange is much more than just mail.
Apart from that: Exchange supports IMAP. -

I'm hoping for IMAP extension support first. UIDPLUS, QERESYNC, CONDSTORE, SPECIAL-USE (which implies support for configuring the all, archive, drafts, junk, flagged, trash and sent IMAP folders), QUOTA, IDLE, SEARCH, ID, etc. UIDPLUS and IDLE are a MUST of course. Also hoping for configuration for number of connections to use.

@burnout426: I actually have NO IDEA what you just wrote. However, in my M3, I can see and interact with all default GMail folders. I can not yet see folders and labels that I assigned in another IMAP client which has a full mirroring of GMail and vice-versa. GMail has a unique and very problematic set of IMAP protocols, with which the mail developers do seem to be winning the battle.

I have no problem with IMAP support coming first. Until POP finally arrives at M3, I still have PocoMail to use here (albeit, no longer being maker-supported) with Thunderbird as a backup. My point was that there are users with reasons to strongly favor downloaded eMails as a 'normal' practice and protocol, instead of leaving the bulk of their messages up in the cloud at mercy of the vagaries and whims of the cloud provider.
-
@Blackbird: I'm one of those who has to have a permanent on-site copy of every business email sent or received, irrespective of what happens at the server side. So I'm looking forward to either POP3 or permanent local storage with IMAP (which can also be offered.)
-
@Quinca71 I'm still there. Blessings.

This topic should be moved to "All platforms". As far as I can see the topic is not Windows-specific but of importance to users of all OS.
-
Since 1.8 is out, please include the M3 with the next build!
-
@saudiqbal: That would be totally OK with me, as it's essentially my default email client right now. I can overlook a host of sins just to know that what I want is nearing completion. But if it were to happen, I fear the resulting tidal wave of bug reports, requests for fixes and demands for features would completely swamp the development team. Further, users would be so irritated by all the rough edges and sharp corners that it might hurt Vivaldi's PR more than help it.
-
@Ayespy We could have an "Enable Highly-Experimental Mail Client" flag under "vivaldi://flags" for those that want to test. That way, it gets some extra shakedown for a while before 2.0 ( for example).
As for feedback, bug reports and feature requests, we could keep that in the forums here for now and let inside testers report anything significant. That way the dev isn't overwhelmed with all our noise on here.
A thought at least.
-
@burnout426: I sympathize with your position, but I fear we'll not see it in public until the devs deem it ready.
-
@burnout426 I think that even if it was an experimental version with lots of warnings telling the user that this feature is experimental, people would still report bugs and even complain about them on the forums & the team blog. I'm patient, I can wait. Besides, if it's IMAP only (so far), it's gonna be useless for me anyway...
-
I can understand, that the devs are not willing to publish M3 until it is ready. Unfortunately waiting is getting harder for me from day to day. I'm using still opera 12.16 as Mail-Client. But I have two problems which makes it more and more a pain for me to use:
-
links inside of mails are opened in opera. I haven't found a way to open them in another browser. The problem is, that more and more websites aren't compatible to opera anymore.
-
I'm on Linux wit KDE. Since plasma 5, I have problems with the fonts in opera. I have dark breeze as theme enabled. This leads to a very bright grey font on white background in the adressfield of the browser an also in the adressfields and the subject field of M2 (it's nearly unreadable). Also haven't found a switch to solve this and i am not willing to change to a light theme just because of Opera.
Maybe somebody has a solution for my problems, so waiting time isn't that bad anymore.

- Copy the link, switch to Vivaldi (Alt Tab), Paste and Go
- This can probably be solved by editing the Opera skin or switching to a different skin. You will find some Opera skins on my downloads page. I don't know whether they will work on Linux. This is Mocha Dark.
