Spell checking fails for some words
-
Hello.
Is it possible to import spell checking dictionary from Opera or Firefox? I am asking because compared to these two browsers spell checking is vastly inferior in Vivaldi, at least when I am using languages other than English.

Chromium and Opera should use the same dictionaries, as Vivaldi no idea about Firefox.
-
I think something broke in recent builds as I can no longer add spell-check dictionaries from Language Settings.
vivaldi://settings/languages

If they use the same dictionary then something is wrong with its spell checking engine.
Vivaldi
Opera
And that is what happens all the time, Opera recognizes and corrects almost all the words I throw at it, while Vivaldi doesn't.

AFAIK Chrome has something like "use web service to check spelling" which basically sends what you type to Google, for obvious reasons this is not present in Vivaldi. (guess it's that "ask google for suggestions right click menu item on your screenshot)

I know Opera uses the "hunspell" dictionaries (used in an old version of OpenOffice), Let's see ... Opera has a Zip file containing a *.dic file (and a couple of others), Vivaldi has a *.bdic file, which a websearch tells me is indeed a Chrome dictionary. Okay, so Opera is the odd one out.

@Gwen-Dragon
I am on 2.5.1525.40 (Stable channel) and there are appropriate bdict files in the User Data folder so I guess the bug that you mentioned above is not my case.@MaxKarlErnst said in Spell checking quality is somewhat off.:

But the browser on my screenshot is Opera and as far as I know it doesn't use Google for spell checking, moreover it doesn't seem to use the same spell checking engine as Chrome.

Thanks for the information.

Can you please post me a cyrillic text (is it russian or which lang?) to test with my Vivaldi?
Yes it's Russian. Sorry for delay. The text is below.
Мандалевидное тело активно участвует в функциях памяти.

Bing translates it OK, but the Hunspell dictionary does not recognise Мандалевидное.
The Mandalidal body is actively involved in memory functions.
This is not a Vivaldi issue as they do not create the dictionaries. Just add unknown words to your spell-checker, and the underlining will disappear.
The English dictionary does not recognise the Bing Translation, which I suspect is just a phonetic transliteration of the word in Cyrillic. The Oxford dictionary also does not recognise it.
I see no reason to complain that the spell-checking quality is "somewhat off," when the word is obviously a rare one, or a medical term.

@Gwen-Dragon said in Spell checking fails for some words:
The word is not in russian Hunspell dict file.
I tested on other programs like The Bat! and LibreOffice.I don't have LibreOffice so I can't test it there, but in The Bat! the correct spelling is suggested.
And in Firefox too.

Yes you are right it is just a transliteration not the actual translation, because Bing failed to correct the misspelling. BTW Google translator suggested the correct spelling.

I feel dissatisfied with Vivaldi's spell engine because this happens with many other words, "Мандалевидное" was just an example where Opera's or Firefox's spell engine works and Vivaldi's doesn't. And the word actually is not that rare.

@Gwen-Dragon said in Spell checking fails for some words:
That is not Vivaldi's fault, the Chromium 75 has the same problem with that word not showing any suggestion.
Vivaldi can not fix it.Ok. I understand that Vivaldi is a Chromium based browser, I just thought that you can fix something that doesn't work right in Chromium.

@Gwen-Dragon said in Spell checking fails for some words:
As i said: report the bug to Chromium bug tracker.
All right. I'll give it a try.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I suspect that Chrome does not keep its own database, but just uses the latest Hunspell libraries.
Anyone can add unknown words to the word list to avoid them being flagged. I guess Vivaldi could keep word lists for several commonly used languages.

@Gwen-Dragon said in Spell checking fails for some words:
I hope the Chromium devs will update their spell checker database.
I hope too.
Following your advice I went to Chromium bug tracker and created there a report(Issue 982310) regarding the issue.
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=982310&can=2&q=982310 - direct link.Update:
I also sent a report to Vivaldi's bug tracker. VB-55305 . -
@Gwen-Dragon said in Spell checking fails for some words:
And your Vivaldi bug report is confirmed by me.
VB-55305 "Spellchecker not showing suggestions for common misspelled words. Russian language."Thank you very much.
