Ctrl+Tab doesn't work
-
Since webpages override browser shortcuts, many sites disable basic actions. Draw.io blocks Ctrl+Tab, for instance.
Can I disable keyboard shortcuts for websites?
-
Under Settings / Keyboard / Page you can set a hotkey to disable shortcuts.
Unless I misunderstand and you actually want to continue using the Vivaldi shortcuts even if a site tries to override it. Then not sure if possible, maybe there's an extension for it?
There should IMO be a setting under Site Permissions to disable a site overriding keyboard shortcuts, for instance some sites disable right-click (or try to), and since it's our browser we should have a choice if we want that at all. Overriding user-settings is A-hole web design.
-
Yes, I want to use Ctrl+Tab etc. even if a website overrides it.
This problem is specific to Vivaldi, Chrome doesn't allow the page to override the browser shortcuts at all. Per site settings would help, but since both Chrome and Firefox behave the same, it would be logical to be able to enable the usual behavior globally.

Which action do you perform with [ Ctrl+Tab ] ?
-
@lamarca Ctrl+Tab is Tab Cycler.
-
@Pathduck Thanks. I am aware it's one of the different ways for witching tabs. I wonder how can a website disable/modify Vivaldi prefs. I can not confirm and you?
-
I know in discord specifically vivaldi acts strangely. There, Ctrl+Tab only works if you press it twice.
Vivaldi handling keyboard shortcuts has always been a little strange. Especially if a page uses either Ctrl or Tab or some other combination as a custom shortcut.

@lamarca Mine look like this:
In any case, it doesn't really bother me. I've learned "muscle memory" to just ctrl+tab twice, and it solves any problem.
-
@LonM We call "learn by osmosis" here. It depends on my postiion in front of the screen, I can use Rocker Gestures, mouse wheel ....
-
@lamarca My actions are "Next tab (by order)" and "Previous tab (by order)".
@LonM Interesting, but there's no similar workaround for draw.io or Chrome Extensions (ctrl+shift+tab specifically, e.g. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/shortkeys-custom-keyboard/logpjaacgmcbpdkdchjiaagddngobkck ).
-
@mknesl Thanks for the reply. Have you ever tried a different way to switch tabs?
- Rocker Gestures
- using the mouse wheel:
there are two ways - place the pointer at the tab+mouse wheel or by holding the right button + mouse wheel - That's my fav
-
@lamarca Sure, by "similar" I meant something that counts as an annoyance rather than an action blocker when going through the tabs. I use Ctrl+PgDown in those cases.

@mknesl said in Ctrl+Tab doesn't work:
VB-52266
Confirmed the bug in the bugtracker, and there were some internal discussions about which shortcuts should be overridable and which not, or if there is another viable solution without breaking too many pages or Vivaldi functions.
The problem looks easier than it is, because Vivaldi has so many shortcuts and allows to set own shortcuts - and some pages need shortcuts too
-
@QuHno Thanks for the update. Would you consider letting the user decide if a shortcut can be overridden? E.g. a checkbox next to each shortcut.
-
@mknesl I am only a Soprano, aka external tester of internal snapshots, but I can try to convince the devs
But that idea is great, so every user has the ability to manage his personal favorite shortcuts which he does not want to be overridden.
You can help me because it is easier for me to convince the devs if I actually have a feature request to do so, so if you can once more use the bug report form and place [feature request] in front of your text in the the summary line ...
-
@QuHno Of course, here it is: VB-52272

Agreed! I would argue the proposed Site Settings โ Keyboard Shortcuts preference ought to be a dropdown with these options:
- Default
- Use only Vivaldi's hotkeys and disable hotkeys from this site
- Use only site's hotkeys and disable Vivaldi's keyboard shortcuts (on this site only)
The last option would be for sites which have useful shortcuts that interfere with Vivaldi's shortcut. This is especially true for custom single-key shortcuts on game sites and such, see two users with similar requests option to disable keyboard shortcut per webpage
and also Keyboard shortcuts breaking experience.Setting a hotkey for Vivaldi's Disable Keyboard Shortcuts work okay, but it's annoying to have to toggle every time for the same websites and even just to move between tabs.
