HTML form upload image from URL: Dead bird error / ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE
-
I’ve been uploading images from their URL to a web site called MusicBrainz for quite long time now.
Upload from URL is possibly a Windows feature.I press a kind of Browse… button that opens the Windows file selector.
Instead of selecting a file, I paste a URL taken from some other web site called discogs (this saves me the time saving the file in temp folder). Then usually it stores the URL downloaded image is some temporary directory, automatically, and it is uploaded into the target form.
But for some days (or weeks?) now, the page is then totally wiped out by some grey background and a big centered dead bird file icon (see above).
Edit: I found out that it may be related to my other ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE error I get on discogs.com globally.

So, to explain: When you do it that way, through the Windows file selector dialog, what happens is that the image is downloaded to the temporary "INetCache" folder for IE before it's then uploaded to the site.
For instance for me, the file is downloaded to:
AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE\49EWV4ZO
I do not even have Internet Explorer installed, but IE is still very much a part of the OS, even in Windows 10. And apparently some component of IE is used for the file download.
When I tried just now in MusicBrainz, I was actually able to upload - but generally I would discourage you from doing it this way. I know it saves time, but you are actually using other Windows features Vivaldi has no control over to accomplish it. It might break at any moment, depending on different factors.
It's too bad MusicBrainz has no feature to allow uploading from a URL. Or that drag+drop between tabs won't work here.

@Gwen-Dragon
Sorry I’m always in latest version — 2.3.1440.60 (Stable channel) (64-bit) — but this issue started a little bit before that version.
I didn’t link to the specific MusicBrainz page as it requires an account to be used.
In a first time, it was just to know if someone else was having this.
For me it’s now each time. Thanks for very good description.
No such issue with IE or FF.
This is Windows 7.If you say it’s an IE component but still it becomes crashing in Vivaldi but not in IE then maybe MusicBrainz did change something recently…

@jesus2099 Give me the URL of the page and what image you're trying to upload and I will try. I am on Windows 10 so not sure what it would do, but at least it will show it's not a fault in Vivaldi.

It’s
https://musicbrainz.org/release/<EDITED_OUT>/add-cover-art
where you can try uploadinghttps://img.discogs.com/<EDITED_OUT>.jpeg.jpg
for instance (you can upload one ofhttps://www.discogs.com/release/<EDITED_OUT>/images
except the one(s) already uploaded with IE by me).Edit: I removed the URL now that the test is done (it was some DEEP PURPLE album).

I was able to upload an image without an error.
But like I said, I'm on Windows 10, I would think this is very dependent on stuff like OS and version of the IE libraries used. Or maybe Vivaldi does not have read access to the IE folder any more?
While this is a faster way of doing things, it is really a "hack" and like I said it could break at any moment.
Sidenote: I used to do the same for the Speed Dial thumbnails - I thought it was a clever way of directly linking to thumbnails instead of having to save the images locally. However, when I used CCleaner to clear cache files, it also cleared IE cache and deleted the thumbnails that were referenced from Vivaldi. So I found it out the hard way this wasn't a way to go :face_with_stuck-out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Hey thank you @Pathduck, I see it worked for you!
Are you also in latest 2.3.1440.60 (Stable channel) (64-bit)?
BTW maybe I know why it does not work with me.
Another issue I witnessed came around the same time is when I go to any discogs.com page it first displays the below error page then after a fraction of second it loads the actual page correctly (without me necessarily click the Reload button).
This page isn’t working
www.discogs.com didn’t send any data.
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE
ReloadMight be something with my office network, actually:

In my case it’s really just a temporary file that I need because once uploaded to MB, I don’t need it any more.

I'm actually on the lastest Snapshot on Windows 10. I don't think it matters though. The ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE error you receive could definitely cause this to happen.
It could be extensions, some other network issue - or most likely - like you say, a proxy changing your request and causing this error?
BTW, should you really be updating MusicBrainz at work? :face_with_stuck-out_tongue:

A good tester uses a program in ways it wasn't intended to work, to find out hidden bugs
