Solved How do I reset the Bookmark Bar to the root bookmark folder?
-
I have the same issue here, since 4.2 version.
I can no longer select the root of bookmarks to move a bookmark from a folder to the root.

@brickwit Hello and Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
Yes, this has been a problem for a good while
It used to be possible to right-click an empty space in the bookmarks list (easiest in the bookmarks manager), and set the root folder as bookmarks bar. This has not worked for a very long time... it's sad that such basic functionality is ignored over a very long time.
Workaround:
- Create a new folder
- Set this new folder as bookmarks bar folder
- Delete the new folder
- Empty trash (optional, recommended)
-
@darkwolf That's a completely different issue.

The bug is almost fixed in Vivaldi 4.2.2406.44Now you can pick the folder you want, but once you do that, the root of the bookmarks (which is just called Bookmarks) disappears from the list, so you can no longer pick the root folder and see all the bookmarks in the Bookmark Bar.
I have tried an old Vivaldi (2.4) and that problem did not exist. The root folder never disappears from the list. If yo use a different folder as Bookmark Bar Folder, it adds the code "Bookmarkbar": "true" to the folder you want, and if you pick the root folder, it changes the code of the folder you had selected to "Bookmarkbar": "false".
As a temporal fix, if you edit the Bookmarks file and add "Bookmarkbar": "false" to the folder you have selected, you can see all your bookmarks again.

Indeed, it is. The root folder for bookmarks can't be selected when moving, and it's the same beahavior as explained here : root folder for bookmarks is no longer available from the list in differents settings (such as moving a bookmark to the root).

Thanks a lot. With all previous comments, I managed to solve my issues by creating a new folder where I put all my bookmarks, and then select it from the list in the settings. It does not work in the first time, you have to select it at least two times to see your bookmarks as they used to be.
And now, you can easily move a bookmark to the root, which now appears with the name of your newly created main folder.

In browsing through the Bookmark Settings page, I decided to see what it looks like to change the "Select Bookmark Bar Folder" from the default to one of my sub-folders, which is a cool option.
Unfortunately, I'm now unable to set it back to the default since "Bookmarks" isn't in the list to select now that a different folder has been set. That means that my customizations of what to show on the bar are now all gone, including a handful of bookmarks that aren't/weren't in a different folder.
So how do I reset that back to the default so that the Bookmark Bar shows all of my top-level bookmark folders, including "Speed Dial"?
-
I should mention that the individual bookmarks that were shown on the Bookmark Bar are listed in the Bookmarks panel, but without this set to the top-level "Bookmarks" folder, I have to scroll down my very long list of bookmarks to get to them instead of them being toward the right edge of my Bookmark Bar.
I should also mention that this is happening on my work computer, where I've got tons of work bookmarks along with tons of personal bookmarks that I had previously imported from Chrome. I currently have the "Select Bookmark Bar Folder" set to my Speed Dial folder since that's what I use most (naturally), but this issue has reduced my ability to use Vivaldi effectively.

@brickwit I don't understand how your root "Bookmarks" folder could have disappeared, but you can create a folder, name it "Bookmarks" (or anything you'd like, really), move all of your bookmarks and folders of bookmarks into it, (just multi-select the entire list and drag) right-click it, and set it as the bookmark bar folder.

@ayespy I don't understand it either, haha. But I'll try creating a new "Bookmarks" folder.
What's really strange is that the Bookmarks panel still shows all of my bookmarks in the exact order I left them, so they're all there but I can't set the top level anymore. ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ

@ayespy I have a "Bookmark Bar" folder, as you suggest, which contains my most frequently used bookmarks. The rest can be accessed from the Bookmark Menu.
However, one cannot select the Root folder as one's Bookmark Bar Folder. It has to be either the Speed Dial folder, or any other folder.
-
@pesala But if you have ALL of your bookmarks and folders in any single folder named anything (as I do) you can select that as your bookmark bar folder (as I do). I have also nominated it as my start-page/speed dial, so I have access to all of my bookmarks from everywhere.
-
I don't believe I ever explicitly created a folder specifically for use by the Bookmark Bar Folder setting, which I'm not even sure I've ever changed until today. But until today, the bar showed all of my top-level folders and the few additional bookmarks at the root "Bookmarks" level.
I've been using Vivaldi as my primary browser (and I'm loving it! ) for a number of months now, and even though I've gone through the Settings panel pretty closely to see what can be done, I don't think that's an option I ever messed with until today.
-
Setting the root folder as bookmarks bar is how I've always preferred it (even though I don't actually use the bar), and it used to work.
In fact, I just tested in Vivaldi 2.9, and it works fine. It later broke, not sure what version.
EDIT: Just tested, it works in 4.0. Then in 4.1 they completely broke "Set as bookmarks bar", and apparently in the process of fixing it they instead broke setting the root folder as the bar.

@pathduck thanks for doing the regression testing with that. Hopefully the Vivaldi team will take another look at this and will implement a fix that allows the root "Bookmarks" level to be set as the Bookmark Bar folder again!
-
@brickwit Not sure anyone's ever reported it though... I might have a go at it
-
@pathduck I would have assumed that the "VB-81911" at the end was their internal bug tracking number, so it must be in the backlog. On the other hand, if customers aren't reporting it as an issue that affects us, I can see how it will forever be pushed to the bottom of the backlog.

@brickwit said in How do I reset "Select Bookmark Bar Folder" back to default "Bookmarks"?:
VB-81911
That one was for fixing the inability to set the bookmarks bar folder at all.
I've reported it as
VB-83735
. We'll see how it goes. -
@pathduck got it, thanks!

Hi,
I accidentally set a BookmarkBarFolder but it seems impossible to set it back to root folder or the default folder.
I was happy with all my bookmarks on the bookmarksbar, so I created a root folder (BookmarksBarRoot). If it was only this it's okay but now some new bookmarks ( context-menu : Bookmark X tabs ) are created outside this folder.
I don't want to reset all my settings just for this
-
Hello @ecchi, and welcome to our forums!
Try this:
- Create a new, empty bookmarks folder
- Set it as the Bookmarks Bar folder
- Delete it
It should now revert the Bookmarks Bar to the root folder.
