Prompt Windows N and KN users to install Media Feature Pack on setup
-
Windows N and KN are editions of windows which comes without Media Features and this will break several playback in most browsers, Vivaldi included. Especially DRM (eg: netflix) and H264 videos.
While users shouldn't be forced to install them, they should incouraged to do that and keep them updated as windows won't do that. Also, the lack of these could cause dead birds on Intel GPUs. Would probably also useful to check everytime Vivaldi is updated as windows won't install them again after a Major Update.

Agree - not everybody is aware of that.
It could be some internal page in Startup Wizard for example that shows which popular codecs are missing.I experienced similar problem and I had no idea what was the cause of Netflix playback problems on one of my systems...
-
This would make perfect sense - Linux users are already prompted to install the codec library if it's missing when they launch, so why not Windows?
-
Yes! brilliant idea!
maybe a link somewhere? and info that different versions/updates of Windows need different Media Feature Pack. I had a hard time with that too. -
Yeah, media feature pack have to be manually updated (windows won't do)
So:
- Start > type
winver
> enter - Look at the number near version (eg: 1803)
- Download the correct pack from the MS site (a reboot may need).
Note: Windows insider N versions hasn't any feature pack available.
So you have to stay on semestral branch (targeted/untargeted) or LTSC/LSTB (which is "older" so you should find the right pack). This is need only after a major update (which change the windows revision).Media Feature pack for Windows 8/8.1/10 N. [MS site link]
Media Feature pack for Windows 7 N/KN SP1. [External Link]
- Start > type

There is some progress on this but I'd keep the request until a clear message on how to get such codecs exists.

It seems that the lack of codec pack is causing dead birds on Windows N editions with Intel GPUs so I think the installer should remark the importance of keeping these updated.
