Support for Amazon Kindle Fire
-
I know it will be a little more work for the Dev. Team but I have just bought the wife and myself Kindles and I know there are many others. it would be great if I had my favourite browser on it. I know the lock it down pretty tight but maybe you could find a way to have it in their app store.
Cannot seem to get to Google app store with these newer devices.
Thanks
[EDIT] Found two ways to get a programme into the kindle:- some companies actually have a download folder for "APKs" F2F for instance.
- there is a method, under advanced settings, privacy/security to allow third-party apps. You must toggle this On to download. (They may not work as intended!
-
If they distribute it as an apk that doesn't rely on Google play services, it should be able to run on any android device.
Of course, if they're building it off of Google chrome for android, there might be some extra work to make it use totally clean apis.
-
I'm not sure play store can be used on kindle. Not officially, at least.
But you can use any other kind of store which come in apk form.
I don't see why V mobile shouldn't have a downloadble apk (the store actually install them) or pushed even on Amazon Store. -
@greybeard Kindle Fire runs a modified Android OS, so once Vivaldi is available on Android, it should be possible to make it available on the Amazon device.

There will definitely be extra work... I don't know if the Fire is as locked down as apple devices as Amazon uses their Silk browser as default.
There seem to be few independent browsers for the Fire, the only recognizable name I found in their App store was the Baidu Browser.
it will probably depend on the user base of this great little device. -
@lonm Exactly! That's what I'm worried about. Might be too much work to make it worthwhile for Vivaldi since the user base on Kindle is so much smaller,
There are a few alternate browsers on the amazon store but I don't know the developers...
(There is no more option to "sideload" apps from the google play store, or other source, but there are sites that have downloadable apks.) -
I have isntalled AuroraOSS to download apps in my Amazon Fire. I installed Vivaldi which works flawless.... but the Amazon's Android System pops up a notification every time I use it informing me that Google Services are needed to use Vivaldi... I close it and keep browsing... but its interesting. I thought Vivaldi didnt use Google services.
-
@Guillermoto I think it may use a few to allow users to connect to Drive or such but it is not necessary at all to download and install Google Services for Vivaldi to work properly.
It is probably a google bug.
I will look into AuroraOSS as I found F-Droid not very up to date. -
Great! I will continue ignoring the error message then. If you need further tests let me know I am happy to help
-
@Guillermoto Please, test all you can. Should you find something goes wrong ask here about it. I (or someone else) can try to replicate any errors. If it can be replicated then someone should report it.else
There are a few Kindle Fire users here. -

No can do, Amazon doesn't allow other browsers in the Fire's app store. Maybe Amazon did when this thread was made, but they don't anymore.
-
@Eggcorn Yes I know. They used to have FF there but they want users to stay within their ecosystem and use Silk browser (capable, stable but featureless and who knows about privacy).
Vivaldi's download of the 32bit Arm version works well on my tablet. -
Alternatively, you can install Vivaldi via the Google Play Store. I think that's the better option, as the Play store should keep Vivaldi updated, and Google's app store is useful to have anyway.
But first you must install the Google Play Store. Here are a couple of articles on installing Google's app store onto Fire tablets, one from William Sattelberg and one from Ryne Hager. Sattelberg's article seems better.
If you install Vivaldi from outside an app store, remember to keep it up to date! Also, remember that Vivaldi can't get security updates if you're on Fire OS 5 (based on Android 5), so use one of these browsers if your Fire tablet has Fire OS 5.
Edit: And here's an article from Joe Fedewa and Chris Hoffman.

On an Kindle, no can do. The Kindle is not recognized as a supported device.
-
@greybeard True. I had a Amazon Fire 7 tablet and it wouldn't let me update to the latest Vivaldi at that time. So I got a 10 inch Android tablet for my birthday.
-
@greybeard Not recognized as supported for Vivaldi, or for the Google Play Store?

Cheers and Belated Happy Birthday
We also will probably have to either get new Kindles or some other tablet to replace ours. Apps are being supported less and less and very few new apps in APK format are being introduced.
-
@Eggcorn Play Store.
Discrimination, I say. I believe it to be the same for Huawei(?) devices and possibly HTC. -
@greybeard Do you have a Kindle Fire, or a plain-old Kindle?
-
@Eggcorn 2 Kindle Fires. One pour moi, the other for the Bride.
