New Google Chrome UI

Just switched from Chrome to Vivaldi and made it my default browser. I like almost everything about it, but I really enjoyed the new Chrome UI that Google implemented a few weeks ago. The rounded corners, the colors, the spacing in the address, tab and toolbars... it just works for me.

I know that I can make some design/layout adjustments in Vivaldi (and I did), but it's impossible to clone the new Chrome UI without modding (which I tried a bit, but it's hard and time-consuming).

I'm new to the Chromium concept as well and I'm wondering: Is there a chance that the Chromium project eventually adopts the new Chrome UI and consequently it'd be available in Vivaldi, too? Forgive me if it's a stupid question. As I said, I'm new to all this.

@fivedesign It's possible. But then, too, customization of the Vivaldi UI will become more powerful and more flexible as time goes on. It's also expected that themes (including colors, shapes and sized of elements) will ultimately be items that users can build and share.

@fivedesign I don't know what it looks like since I don't have it installed, but just so that you (or anyone else visiting this thread) know, you can enable (and configure) corners rounding in Vivaldi too. Just go to vivaldi://settings/themes/ create a new theme (or edit the one that you're using) and change the "Corner Rounding" according to your preference.

Thanks @pafflick. I already set the "Corner Rounding" option to its max of 14px, which actually comes pretty close to Chrome's layout (minus the rounding at the bottom of the tabs). I also changed the colors in my theme to simulate Chrome's standard layout as good as I can.

Here's a screenshot comparing my current Vivaldi layout to the default Chrome UI:

There are subtle differences:

Chrome's tab and address bars are a bit taller (I know that I can achieve this by zooming the UI in Vivaldi but that makes other elements bigger, too)
Chrome's tabs are wider, which I like
Much nicer back/forward/home buttons in Chrome
A little more spacing overall (more room, cleaner design)

Again, the differences are subtle. By opening this thread I was just trying to understand if Chromium, in general, follows Chrome's design standards.

It's hard to tell, I'd even say: not in this case, as Vivaldi mostly uses it's own, independent layout. Many of these differences are subtle and it's a matter of the personal preferences/taste.

Basically, Vivaldi's UI is written using HTML/CSS, so you can fiddle with it if you're familiar with web design. I'm using the debug parameter (-–flag-switches-begin --debug-packed-apps --silent-debugger-extension-api --flag-switches-end) to run Vivaldi in debug mode, which allows you to use the Inspection tool on the UI elements - it makes modding Vivaldi much easier for me.

@pafflick yep, I do the same. Unfortunately, this doesn't work with Chrome which makes it impossible to inspect its UI and, consequently, harder to copy its design.

lol it's interesting how Google is trolling Mozilla, first Mozilla copies Chrome's UI with Quantum to make it look like Chrome in order to steal some users, then Google copies old Firefox's UI and people think it's better, while they could have used Firefox for ages with that look

I very much prefer Vivaldi's look compared to those "more feminine" designs, Opera 's UI looks ok too (though I'm not using it).

@npro I don't think so, Firefox copied Chrome with Australis which is the old UI now, Chrome basically copied that with a bit of the square tabs.

What is so great about the colours of Chrome? I just looked at a screenshot and the interface seems to be mostly white with a bit of grey on the tab bar.
